In order to honour Edward’s 59th birthday

Ah !
Thank you @YetMoreNewBeginnings.

If he’d had a Dukedom on his wedding day (when this plan was announced) he’d now be HRH Duke of FirstDukedom and Edinburgh, much as William is now Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge. Which is just clunky

Whereas because he was an Earl, this supersedes that and he’s now HRH Duke of Edinburgh

Why didn't the queen make him doe though? Pp died in June 2021

Because it was a hereditary title so when PP died it was one of the titles inherited by Charles.

It only became available for giving out again when Charles titles merged with the crown when he became King.

Badger1970 · 10/03/2023 09:52

I fell down an internet rabbit hole with this last night, and realised that the title has only been used 3 times before - now 4.

Edward is a very deserving recipient and thankfully it's not Harry

LadyEloise1 · 10/03/2023 09:52

Thank you @YetMoreNewBeginnings but couldn't they have made him a Marquess so he would be only one step down the ladder from Andrew rather than two for many years ?
Not that it matters a jot really.

James currently viscount Severn will eventually become Earl of Wessex and that is hereditary

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 10/03/2023 09:55

You don’t really get royal Marquesses. Not 100% sure why.

Royals tend to be Dukes or Earls.

I think it harks back to when Dukes were all royal. So marquess was the senior non royal title.

as I said though, I’m not 100% sure

purpledalmation · 10/03/2023 09:59

He seems nice, and I'm glad he's had this recognition

VictorStrand · 10/03/2023 10:00

I wonder how they told him. Did KC's office call Edward's office? Did KC invite Edward for an early birthday lunch and give him an envelope with a 'Charles got you the Duke of Edinburgh title for your birthday'? Did KC's office draft the press release, then say 'oy, Edward! check out this week's press releases. There's a surprise for you in there!'

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 10/03/2023 10:01

Given that Edward and Sophie are in Edinburgh today it’s clearly been well planned and organised that it would be announced today

CathyorClaire · 10/03/2023 10:04

Charles can whimsically dish out the baubles with one hand and take them away with the other.

More circus.

DaphneduM · 10/03/2023 10:04

Well deserved in my opinion. They do quite a bit of very good work.

Rosula · 10/03/2023 10:05

Good. It would be wrong for it to go to anyone else, and I think he and his wife have earned it.

JenniferBarkley · 10/03/2023 10:06

James is now Earl of Wessex.

hellsbells99 · 10/03/2023 10:10

Good.

The queen was the Duchess of Edinburgh as one of her lesser titles, hence being passed on once the queen died and it became free to use.
I suppose she became the dowager duchess when pp died but I guess QE2 couldn’t imagine anyone else being DofE except pp in her lifetime.

The Queen was only Duchess as Philips wife - her father created him DofE.

Charles became DofE on his fathers death so it wasn’t available for Edward until Charles became king.

The article i linked theories that when Edward dies the title might pass on to Charlotte or Louis in order to keep it as a senior title within the immediate family. It will be interesting if Charlotte inherits it as I don’t think women can be Duchesses in their own right, can they?

James is now Earl of Wessex.

No he isn't. He's still Viscount Severn. His father still holds the Wessex Earldom.

They can if the title is created that way.

Either it can be created for a woman, or it can be created in a way that allows it to pass to a daughter - as happened when the Duke of Fife only had a daughter many years ago and Queen Victoria created it to pass to her.

No he isn't. He's still Viscount Severn. His father still holds the Wessex Earldom.

That's what I thought, but I guess Earl of Wessex is now the subsidiary title he's using. Stated in the BBC article, and it's how he's listed on the royal family's website.

Edward is the Viscount Severn as well - the son just uses the most senior of his fathers titles that he doesn’t go by.

Makes sense for James to use Earl of Wessex now given that is what he’ll be forever with the lifetime creation of DofE for Edward.

Slimjimtobe · 10/03/2023 10:21

I am happy for him and Sophie is a great lady - she seems very genuine and sincere and hardworking

Yes you're right! That's interesting.

I guess now that Earl is a subsidiary title for Edward, his son can use it?

It’s an interesting point. Anne Boleyn was created Marquess of Pembroke in her own right by Henry VIII before their marriage, but it is not often used by the Royal Family. I wonder why?
