Monarch wants to use ceremony to showcase ‘UK plc’ internationally, despite being deeply conscious of the cost of living crisis

How do you feel about this?

funny a few weeks ago different papers were reporting the scaled back cost conscious coronation that was being planned.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 22/12/2022 11:59

Isn't the pomp the main point of them? Get rid of it and there's no real substance there.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 22/12/2022 12:01

I'm not in favour of the continued existence of the Royal Family.

From the perspective of - we are stuck with them, how can we make the best of it - I would rather see the Coronation focus on local (free) celebrations around the UK (and Commonwealth) that might actually bring pleasure to people or at least be 'something to do' when people are struggling to afford leisure activities.

I don't think we should spunk millions on showing off to the world at large. It won't make us any more popular in the long term - it will be forgotten within days.

caringcarer · 22/12/2022 12:02

Most of it will be military marching and bands. Like when Queen died. Possibly King Charles and Queen consort Camilla riding in that golden coach. Only 2000 guests instead of 8000.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/12/2022 12:16

Well he's waited a hell of a long time for this and is known to be one of the RF's most profligate spenders, so there's no way he'd ever have agreed a more modest version - especially when the taxpayers will be footing the bill

Rudolphtheinsomniacreindeer · 22/12/2022 12:17

Is there a public holiday for this one (misses point of thread entirely 😉)

Yes - Monday 8th May. We will have two in a row, as Monday 1st May is the normal May Bank holiday.

The Coronation one is on the Monday, not the Friday, so it doesn't affect local elections which are happening on Thursday 4th May.

Agreed. I quite enjoy the pomp and pageantry so I am pleased about this.

Many of us will only see one Coronation in our lifetime - might as well make it worth the wait.

MarshaMelrose · 22/12/2022 12:25

I think he's a sensible guy. Why not wait and see it rather than spending 5 months angsting over it? That way you can pull it to pieces based on actual facts. Because, let's face it, no matter what Charles decides, you've already decided it's going to dreadful.

Not wishing to be morbid, but if you are younger than Charles and in good health, it's likely you'll see William's at least. Charles is 74 - even if he matches his father in longevity, that's another Coronation in approx 26 years' time.

FriedEggChocolate · 22/12/2022 12:26

Anyone know if hes going to have a 2nd birthday each year, like the queen did?

I can't see a single post so far that has said it's going to be 'dreadful'.

Yes, 17th June. He will be Trooping the Colour as monarch for the first time next year.

I'd be surprised if he didn't, FriedEggChocolate. Trooping the Colour marks the monarch's official birthday, and since his actual one is in November I can't see them wanting to stage that in one of the most horrible months of the year

You clearly don't read @tatalan 's many, many posts then.

Soothsayer1 · 22/12/2022 12:29

He wants to put on a big show to make us look like a wealthy country to cover up the reality, the country may be rich but most of the people are poor, he doesn't want to be known because it makes him look bad.
Never mind about us as long as he looks good.. the only reason the monarchy is still there is because the Queen knew it was better if she kept her mouth shut the most of the time

No one has said it would be dreadful. I'm quite looking forward to it.

I’m not in the UK, but I’m all for the spectacle. I’ll be tuning in if it’s all glittery jewels etc. Hopefully lots of people around the world feel the same and the broadcast rights will be worth mega bucks.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/12/2022 12:35

It being big means more world leaders being invited and the UK needs all the help it can get wrt International Relations at the moment.Xmas Blush

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/12/2022 12:37

I'd forgotten about the proximity to this of the local elections, and since big "monarchy" events are said to be a boost for the Conservatives, I guess that at least partly explains why they'll be happy to go along with it

I shall preserve this post and remind you of it on the 9th May. Hehe.
