Monarch wants to use ceremony to showcase ‘UK plc’ internationally, despite being deeply conscious of the cost of living crisis

How do you feel about this?

It being big means more world leaders being invited and the UK needs all the help it can get wrt International Relations at the moment.Xmas Blush

Does it? Why's that then?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 22/12/2022 12:39

Hopefully there'll be a Mumsnet watch along thread. The watch along thread for the late Queen's 'Platinum Pageant' was hilarious.

Damnautocorrect · 22/12/2022 11:58

funny a few weeks ago different papers were reporting the scaled back cost conscious coronation that was being planned.

This. It would seem a bit out of touch, considering the col crisis, many people find themselves in at this present time.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 22/12/2022 12:43

Hopefully the BBC will keep Lulu away from the commentary box this time.

Giggorata · 22/12/2022 12:48

I suppose that's what they're there for, after all.

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:05

Of course Chuck rejected the slimmed down coronation . He has lied about all his 'plans ' re the 'modernisation ' of the monarchy .
He lied when he said at his wedding that Camilla would never be queen .

The UK is the only country in Europe to continue with the expense of a coronation. It will cost at least 100 million . It is purely PR for the Windsors .
Why bother with it ?
Well today Symon Hill was told he is being prosecuted for asking ' who elected him?' when passing the 'proclamation ' in Oxford .
He is pleading not guilty .
The boot of the monarchy is gilded but it's still a boot .

I love King Charles. I can't wait for the Coronation. I hope all the dukes and earls come in their robes. It'll be spectacular. Lots of gold and diamonds and pomp. Lovely.

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:11

Yes it's crass .
But there's no accounting for taste

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/12/2022 13:12

Does it? Why's that then?

Because we need to do a lot of trade deals.

Sugarfree23 · 22/12/2022 12:22

Many of us will only see one Coronation in our lifetime - might as well make it worth the wait.

We have to hope not.

purpledalmation · 22/12/2022 13:15

It'll brighten up a miserable year, so why not. These people are already employed, so might as well make use of them

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 22/12/2022 13:16

It's a load of nonsense. People are needing foodbanks and warm banks just to survive and this is considered appropriate.

I'm flying out of the U.K. on the day of the coronation (booked well before the date was announced) and I'm glad.

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:17

Soothsayer1 · 22/12/2022 12:29

He wants to put on a big show to make us look like a wealthy country to cover up the reality, the country may be rich but most of the people are poor, he doesn't want to be known because it makes him look bad.
Never mind about us as long as he looks good.. the only reason the monarchy is still there is because the Queen knew it was better if she kept her mouth shut the most of the time

Yes.
Their 'invisible contract' with the gutter press exposed
The international revulsion at the dog whistle royalist bile from Clarkson , proving every word of the H and M doc to be true
The proud achievement of the NHS being destroyed before our eyes .
Strikers being ignored by the government so they let essential services collapse .
But Chuck thinks - I'll just copy Mummie's playbook and the serfs will love it

PeekAtYou · 22/12/2022 13:17

Disappointing if true. If he were young like his mother then I'd think it were fine but this won't be a long reign so should be simplified imo.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/12/2022 13:20

He lied when he said at his wedding that Camilla would never be queen

To be strictly accurate I believe it was "spokesmen" who said that rather than Charles himself
AFAIK the closest he ever came to a recorded remark was in a response to a child who asked him about it, when he stuttered something along the lines of "Umm well ... errr ... that could be ... we'll have to see"

Now in fairness some may regard that as a suitable sort of remark to have to make when it comes to a future queen, but as a Republican who believes that if we have to have them at all there should surely be some sort of dignity it's not my view

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/12/2022 13:21

I’m not in favour of spending a lot of money on it myself. But Charles was always going to up for spending someone else’s money (ie ours, the tax payer) on something mahoosive, particularly given how long he has waited. It will be a shameful waste of money which could be put to much better use. Whether it will be ‘dreadful’ or not I dont know, and won’t find out as I will not be watching any of it!

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:22

The bottom line is there is no need for it

It's embarrassing for the UK that this nonsense goes on

You can talk about ' constitutional monarchy ' but none of the other European monarchies act in this way .
They don't have a coronation for a start .
This sort of thing sets out how far the royals in the UK go - never mind their interference in laws to exclude themselves .
It would not be tolerated elsewhere

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/12/2022 13:12

Because we need to do a lot of trade deals.

Good point. I thought we had similar to what we had in the EU but I guess we always need more.

Now there's something I've learned today, Novella
No offence but I doubted it for a moment so checked and you're quite right: www.ucl.ac.uk/constitution-unit/research-areas/monarchy-church-and-state/accession-and-coronation/planning-next-accession-and#:~:text=Belgium%2C%20Luxembourg%20and%20the%20Netherlands,in%20Spain%20since%20medieval%20times.

"Which other European monarchies have a coronation?"
"None. Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have never had one; Denmark, Norway and Sweden discontinued theirs from 1849, 1906 and 1873 respectively; and there have been no coronations in Spain since medieval times"

Most of us will outlive Charles.

Well, suck it up, baby, cos its happening. 🙂

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:32

@Puzzledandpissedoff
It was made known that Camilla would never be queen

If you remember Chalres and Camilla wedding - the queen didn't attend .

Then just this year I think the elderly queen put out an odd statement that it was her 'wish ' that Camilla be called queen
Clearly a deal done re Andrew's need for millions to pay off his sex crime accuser
Lovely .

And the lunch and Clarkson have undone decades of PR and 'invisible contract' media work to make her acceptable

Soothsayer1 · 22/12/2022 13:35

I can't help thinking that Netflix have also help to undo some of that PR work with their crown series.....
