How do you feel about this?

I think Charles probably can put toothpaste on a toothbrush. Didn't someone on these threads say that all valets put toothpaste on their employers' toothbrushes, as part of the job?

Yes, I doubt anyone did it for him at Gordonstoun.

antelopevalley · 23/12/2022 13:47

Nobody is saying he can't physically put toothpaste on his toothbrush. The man is not an idiot. Just used to not having to do anything for himself.

In the Scriptures, kings are called gods, and so their power after a certain relation compared to the Divine power. Kings are also compared to fathers of families; for a king is true parens patriae [parent of the country], the politic father of his people.

Would we call King Charles III god-like?

He can’t even stand up for his own daughter-in-law being hounded by the British press. What kind of father-in-law is that?

CathyorClaire · 23/12/2022 14:41

*He could have a really pared back short ceremony lasting 20 minutes on BBC2 for those that want to watch it. It's going to be like the funeral again isn't it... wall to wall everywhere.

Totally OTT. He's having some grand marching past thingy on his birthday too.
Slimmed down monarchy my arse.*

Spot on.

It's becoming more and more apparent he's played the public for years with this tosh. He's never intended a 'slimmed down monarchy' to affect his own lavish lifestyle.

Still waiting to see if any of the never to be reduced SG is to be handed back voluntarily.

The same sort of fther inlaw what has a toxic daughter inlaw and feels just as betrayed as her real father. Funny that she has two families and inlding siters and sister inlaws she bitches about on TV and does not get along with. Some might say there seems to be a trend developing and you wonder why no one will defend her 😂

I had high hopes he actually meant it regarding the slimmed down monarchy. He's talked about it for 20 years. I am having doubts. Understatement.

When Buckingham Palace has finally finished its renovations, surely he can't keep the extra ... it does say a 'temporary uplift' of about £34 million per year, works due to be completed 2026-27.

I must make a diary note Grin

antelopevalley · 23/12/2022 14:53

I think he does mean it with the slimmed down monarchy. But what he means is less working Royals, less engagements, but the same or more money.
When William becomes Monarch he will declare it even more slimmed down by hardly doing any engagements,

I thought the toothpaste thing was a one off when he had a really bad back?

Funny what media stories are to be believed as gospel, and which ones are to be ignored/dismissed

Hbh17 · 23/12/2022 14:54

It will be fantastic. I want the gold coach, Zadok the Priest, robes and lots of diamonds. Why ever not?

I think the toothpaste thing was when he had his arm in a sling (still not impossible to squeeze your own toothpaste but hey ho).
It's the rest of the fawning and pandering that gets me. Illustrated by being unable to move an inkwell three inches.
And by Andrew unable to pull curtains an inch without swearing and calling for someone to do it for him.
It's about time they stopped all this servile servant nonsense.

antelopevalley · 23/12/2022 15:00

They are used to having people respond to their every whim and have developed the inevitable arrogance and entitlement as a result.

Oh, might have been. I knew it was a one off due to some sort of injury.
Just don’t see the issue in that one, but it’s constantly trotted out.

When DP had an injury I helped him get dressed. Doesn’t lead that he’s a man child who has to dressed by manservant’s everyday, just one of those things.

I don’t even see how the toothpaste thing is worthy of being mentioned 🤷‍♀️

mumda · 23/12/2022 15:19

They had better consider how to accommodate all the visitors from overseas as the UK hotel system is a bit refugeed out at the moment.

Roussette · 23/12/2022 15:21

The coronation is unprecedented, the last one having been more than half a century ago. Will people flood here to see it? Can't imagine so but what do I know., I won't be watching it, except to maybe catch news highlights and see if it is as ostentatious as he is promising.

Serenster · 23/12/2022 16:06

I read exactly the same comment before every big royal event, starting with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002 and continuing through to her funeral, and each time am somewhat surprised to see that the answer is yes, they do. Because it turns out that the people in the media and online who like to tell us their views very loudly don’t actually speak for the country as a whole.

It will be interesting to see what happens for the Coronation - I wouldn’t bet against wide public interest (my sons’ school is already canvassing for ideas to mark it, and I know of two streets already planning parties).

MarshaBradyo · 23/12/2022 16:08

People travelled for the funeral so I don’t see why we won’t get similar. Maybe not exactly the same amount as many people did love the Queen

It is a boost for spending etc

MarshaMelrose · 23/12/2022 16:39

Every jubilee the press forecast no one was interested, they wouldn't show up and it woud be a flop. The palace worried about it every time. But no, people turned out and loved it.

The press are the most miserable industry. They think they know everything, how to solve every crisis and yet they couldn't figure out which way round to put their underpants on.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/12/2022 18:31

It's maybe unfortunate if anyone believed the "slimming down" thing in the first place; after all, was it ever really likely when Charles is widely reported to be the most profligate spender of the lot (though preferably when it's others' money he's using)?

It's just possible he'll reduce the number of working royals still further, but I hope nobody expects any savings to make it back to taxpayers - ditto the uplift in the Sovereign Grant for palace repairs

And yes I've got a hat ready for if I'm wrong, but won't be switching the oven on quite yet

PicturesOfDogs · 23/12/2022 19:37

I never took ‘slimmed down monarchy’ as meaning bargain basement ceremonies.

I always just took it as less people

Yes; only Charles and his line appearing on the balcony.

CathyorClaire · 23/12/2022 20:00

The spending boost has been shown to have only a short lived economic effect.

And do we really need more one-use plastic tat strangling turtles?

limoncello23 · 23/12/2022 21:47

The slimmed down monarchy always meant that he wasn't going to have his nieces and nephews as 'working royals', and that the primary focus would be on Charles, Camilla, William, Kate and (pre Megxit) Harry and Meghan.

Initially the government suggested that we shouldn't have a bank holiday, but obviously that's changed since it's the thing that most people are interested in and pleased about. I would guess that the difference in cost between a 'cut down' ceremony and fully blinged out one is not as high as you might think. A big chunk of the cost is in the security, which is more dependent on crowd size than anything else. And they already own all the bling you could possible need.

Morestrangethings · 24/12/2022 01:14

pelargoniums · 22/12/2022 14:19

They should do a preemptive coronation for Wills at the same time – a twofer. Maybe get George done too, then we’re set for however long, three for the price of two, and they can just organise the handover in-house themselves in future.

LOL, I love the practicality of this.

Morestrangethings · 24/12/2022 01:24

tatalan · 22/12/2022 14:34

What does that mean, can you pls explain?

I take it to mean it looks pretty, but it still hurts.
