Monarch wants to use ceremony to showcase ‘UK plc’ internationally, despite being deeply conscious of the cost of living crisis

How do you feel about this?

The boot of the monarchy is gilded but it's still a boot.

oooh good quote, @Novella4, I'll have to remember that

What does that mean, can you pls explain?

Good point. I thought we had similar to what we had in the EU but I guess we always need more.

We definitely do not have what we had in the EU and we have done a few shit deals so far. We desperately need foreign trade and investment.

I believe it means that while the royals may cover themselves in jewels and ride in pretty gold carriages, it's still an institution built on violence and oppression.

Ah let them have it whatever way they decide. It is only a spectacle for the peasants who are kept outside the palace gates anyway.

I just hope that cranky chuck is not near any pens and inkwells. I'd say the organisers will be sweating with anxiety and tip toeing around him. What a load of bollocks when you think about it.

Bread and circuses.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/12/2022 14:52

I thought that if Charles & Camilla were married at the time he became King then she would automatically be Queen?
Was there ever a chance of that not happening?

There was some questioning as to the legality of the marriage at the time with regard to the ability of a future monarch to enter a civil marriage, and this led to a report being commissioned which presumably set out the exact legal position

I say "presumably" because Charles had this report sealed for his lifetime, so the result is yet another thing we can't know

superdupernova · 22/12/2022 14:56

I'm looking forward to it. I'm not a royalist but do enjoy the spectacle of big royal events.

You clearly don't read @tatalan 's many, many posts then.

Antelopevalley is going to be so pissed off....😆

antelopevalley · 22/12/2022 15:20

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain Not pissed off. Just another example of them promising one thing and doing another thing.
And of course Camilla is Queen.

FourChimneys · 22/12/2022 15:22

Will it be a military parade like the funeral for the queen? The few bits of that I saw reminded me of the parades they have in places like Russia and North Korea, showing off all their soldiers.

I won't be watching it, I think the monarchy should have been abolished decades ago. Very annoyed it's a bank holiday though. If people want to watch the spectacle it should be annual leave. This country is so workshy.

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/12/2022 15:24

If this is true I am now even a tiny bit surprised. If there ever was a man who obviously enjoyed all the expensive, entitled parts of being royalty it's Charles.

notfeelingChristmassy · 22/12/2022 15:26

So the Firm decided to go for the big show with all the trimmings eg pomp and props. Hope they cost it carefully to bring in a good return for the promoter.

The actual ceremony is on a Saturday so why the Bank Holiday on the Monday is anyone's guess, especially as it's only a week after the last one and 2 weeks before the next.

Give the people what they want! He can have half a dozen coronations if I get lots of lovely spring/summer bank holidays out of it. No obligation to watch the boring thing, just a nice long weekend.

AuntieMarys · 22/12/2022 15:29

He's not reading the room is he? Is it meant to distract us commoners from the shitstorm that is the UK?

Passerillage · 22/12/2022 14:30

Fitting then that the same publication published this article yesterday:

Britain is a poor country pretending to be rich
Strikes, early retirement, and a me-me-me culture at work all point to a nation living in a fantasy world

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/12/21/britain-poor-country-pretending-rich/?li_source=LI&li_medium=liftigniter-rhr

This (poor pretending to be rich) has been practised by the aristocracy for years. Now they have the King headlining the show.

Pemba · 22/12/2022 15:33

Absolutely tone deaf of them with the state the country is in, and a colossal waste of money. I am surprised really, I thought maybe Charles was a bit more self aware than that.

MarshaBradyo · 22/12/2022 15:35

The last I heard it was going to be scaled back.

I’m not that fussed either way. But not averse to a bit of pomp and ceremony.

BadgerB · 22/12/2022 15:42

Remember the crowds at the Jubilee? Made a great boost to the U.K. economy.
Same will probably happen with a Coronation.

shreddies · 22/12/2022 15:42

I usually quite like watching royal pageantry but I think this is the wrong call.

PeekAtYou · 22/12/2022 15:45

I'm in my 40s and pretty confident that I will see along William. I will be shocked if Charles is King in his 90s like his mother.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 22/12/2022 15:48

I’m all for as much pomp and ceremony as possible. If there is one thing the uk does well. It’s pomp and ceremony. After such a hard few years. I’m all for a bit of a celebration, paring it down would be miserable

Littlepuddytat · 22/12/2022 15:49

God hes a piece of work.

I'll take a bank holiday though.
