Monarch wants to use ceremony to showcase ‘UK plc’ internationally, despite being deeply conscious of the cost of living crisis

How do you feel about this?

@Puzzledandpissedoff
It was made known that Camilla would never be queen

If you remember Chalres and Camilla wedding - the queen didn't attend .

Then just this year I think the elderly queen put out an odd statement that it was her 'wish ' that Camilla be called queen
Clearly a deal done re Andrew's need for millions to pay off his sex crime accuser
Lovely .

And the lunch and Clarkson have undone decades of PR and 'invisible contract' media work to make her acceptable

She didn't attend the civil ceremony, but she did go to the religious blessing after. I think we can take that a her seal of approval.

None of the other European monarchies act in this way ... they don't have a coronation for a start

Now there's something I've learned today, Novella
No offence but I doubted it for a moment so checked and you're quite right: www.ucl.ac.uk/constitution-unit/research-areas/monarchy-church-and-state/accession-and-coronation/planning-next-accession-and#:~:text=Belgium%2C%20Luxembourg%20and%20the%20Netherlands,in%20Spain%20since%20medieval%20times.

"Which other European monarchies have a coronation?"
"None. Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have never had one; Denmark, Norway and Sweden discontinued theirs from 1849, 1906 and 1873 respectively; and there have been no coronations in Spain since medieval times"

@Puzzledandpissedoff
No offense taken !

I'm delighted to spread a few facts esp when in the UK the MSM has such a grip re misinformation

I have hope though as the young dont engage with MSM much and hence have a much more jaundiced view of the 'royals'

JaneJeffer · 22/12/2022 13:37

Oh goody. I will be watching on from Ireland. Love a bit of pomp and ceremony I don't have to pay for.

I can't help thinking that Netflix have also help to undo some of that PR work with their crown series.....

I think this season of the crown was extremely kind to Charles.

I think he's a sensible guy. Why not wait and see it rather than spending 5 months angsting over it? That way you can pull it to pieces based on actual facts. Because, let's face it, no matter what Charles decides, you've already decided it's going to dreadful.

I think you've pretty much nailed it there

TimBoothseyes · 22/12/2022 13:46

He wants it, he can pay for it, the RF gets enough public money as it is.

Suedomin · 22/12/2022 13:46

if they insist on having a coronation it should be as cut back as possible, there was enough royal pomp and ceremony in 2022 to last a lifetime. Now isn't the time to waste money. I don't think there should be a bank holiday for it either when many businesses struggling
How can the Government spend tens of millions on an event like this and schools and hospitals crumble while some people go hungry and cold. Its immoral

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:47

Charles should be paying for all this nonsense himself

It is not needed . It's pure PR for the fading corrupt Windsors .

We all know the state the country is in . It has rarely been so bad in our lifetimes and likely to get worse next year
Put your hand in your pocket charles and pay for it all your bloody self since this coronaorion has no function.

That PR may have some effect .
And that's the first and last time I give them any advice

Novella4 · 22/12/2022 13:48

@TimBoothseyes

Sorry I see now that you made the same point .

How people can tolerate this nonsense is up to them but what it should not be is paid for by the state !
It's a disgrace .

LadyKenya · 22/12/2022 13:51

It is not on, to be seen to be spending all this money on his coronation. Unless he is footing the bill himself, any amount that the public has to spend is too much, imo.

diddl · 22/12/2022 13:55

I thought that if Charles & Camilla were married at the time he became King then she would automatically be Queen?

Was there ever a chance of that not happening?

Fadedpicture · 22/12/2022 14:01

I think this is good. I'm not a Royalist, generally fairly ambivalent, but most of the cost of these shows is in labour. Now is not time to cut back on those jobs.

Yes, at the time of the wedding it was said she'd be known as Princess Consort. In the Jubilee Speach HMQ said it was her desire for Camilla to be Queen.

At the time I thought that speech was a goodbye speech and ultimately it was her last one.

diddl · 22/12/2022 14:11

Yes, at the time of the wedding it was said she'd be known as Princess Consort.

Although she would actually be Queen Consort?

So in the way she was known as the Duchess of Cornwall although entitled to use Princess of Wales?

Not wishing to be morbid, but if you are younger than Charles and in good health, it's likely you'll see William's at least. Charles is 74 - even if he matches his father in longevity, that's another Coronation in approx 26 years' time.

They should do a preemptive coronation for Wills at the same time – a twofer. Maybe get George done too, then we’re set for however long, three for the price of two, and they can just organise the handover in-house themselves in future.

FancyFanny · 22/12/2022 14:20

I'm all for it! The bigger the better! The Queen's coronation came just after the war ended and it massively boosted everyone and the economy! Why should this coronation be any different? We don't need doom and gloom and a low key budget coronation for our King- they are supposed to be extravagant and ostentatious and full of pomp and ceremony- that's the whole point!

vera99 · 22/12/2022 14:25

For me either they pick up the tab or crowdfund it (or sponsorship, Coronation Street might be a good fit or Crown Paints for that matter !) That way they will shut up moaners like me and other various 'malcontents' and actually get in front of the argument for change.

Your moaning means nothing, this is not a democracy lol

I feel unsurprised.

NowDoYouBelieveMe · 22/12/2022 14:29

Embarrassed to be associated with this shite tbh. It's bad enough at the best of times, and these are definitely not the best of times.

Hopefully it'll spark some kind of resistance but I won't hold my breath.

FancyFanny · 22/12/2022 14:30

Saving money on the Coronation would not stop anyone from going hungry and cold- the national budget just does not work like that!

As for the extra bank holiday- well that's going to have a minimal impact and it's possible that many people will benefit from it because there'll be increased spending on retail, leisure and hospitality.

rumship · 22/12/2022 14:30

Love it and hope they spend million`s. If you dont like it dont watch and dont take the day off, litterly NO-ONE cares!

If it really affects you badly them i guessing you need to have a long hard look at your own life 😂

Passerillage · 22/12/2022 14:30

Fitting then that the same publication published this article yesterday:

Britain is a poor country pretending to be rich
Strikes, early retirement, and a me-me-me culture at work all point to a nation living in a fantasy world

NowDoYouBelieveMe · 22/12/2022 14:33

The boot of the monarchy is gilded but it's still a boot.

oooh good quote, @Novella4, I'll have to remember that

It should work like that, if we had any morals it would.
