Harry and Meghan's show is number 1 on Netflix in the UK and US. Did you watch it people of Mumsnet?

@notanotheroneagain the self-documenting was going on from their 2nd date when it was still a secret and nothing was said about her.
Who calls a friend just before a proposal and even records it?
Very deliberate in my opinion..

CathyorClaire · 09/12/2022 21:02

too

Bastard keyboard 😡

Sorry, on second thought I think I'm wrong about the sneaking across London part. I thought it was beforehand but I'm down with a virus so probably a bit muddled! Would probably still stand though as they'd be looking out for her and watching any royal drivers.

Haha, I LOVE a good thriller! It's just with this, the amount of hate is quite difficult to see. If you don't like them, scroll past. There's really no need for it, it doesn't affect anyone but them and they're family.

Sorry to hear your ill! Awful stuff going round. Have an ill babe here myself. Get well soon!

And If you have any must see thriller recommendations then do let me know! 😂

I clearly need something to dissect lol!

Haydugee · 09/12/2022 21:06

Tried to, but found it boring and mildly embarrassing.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 09/12/2022 21:07

Anyway glad you enjoyed it tatala, it wouldn't do for us all to like the same things. Variety's the spice of life and all that crap - nice to see you don't just enjoy the Superbowl or Earthshot programmes.

What superbowl? I'm confused 🤔

No, I don't much like them and I'm just not interested in them or what they have to say.

What I don't understand is people who hate them watching it. Why? Why would you watch something you hate? Just to wind yourself up, while they benefit from the additional viewing figures. Weird.

Judgyjudgy · 09/12/2022 21:17

Not surprised, just look how many threads are on here (which all basically say the same thing). The irony is the haters are the ones who seem the most invested in them, quite sad really Confused

ImAvingOops · 09/12/2022 21:18

I watched it. First thing to note is that there was tremendous goodwill and happiness for them at the start. People were genuinely happy that Harry had found someone. So it's untrue to imply Britain didn't want her because she was mixed race.
The tabloid press is not always representative of public opinion - the papers might have been sniffy about her background and at times racist, but the British public genuinely welcomed her. I don't think racism here is worse than the USA. Attitudes changed not because of racism but because they wanted the trappings of royalty without reciprocating. Like it or not, the RF does owe the public some access.

I do think it's awful that the papers tracked down everyone she'd ever met and tried to buy stories - that's shocking behaviour and ought to be stopped. But I don't buy for one minute that she knew nothing about the RF - she would have been on Google like the rest of us. Also worth noting that it was her own father who sold stories - that's on him.

There was a lot of blame put on British press but foreign paparazzi are worse because there's no reciprocal relationship there and our press were reeled in a bit after what happened with Princess Diana. Lots of negative stories about the RF are published by foreign papers, including US ones but not in British papers. There was no acknowledgment of this in the documentary.

There was a lot of criticism of the RF as an institution - fair enough to say that it's not for them and they want to leave. But stop monetising the association with the RF and give back the titles. The fact is that Netflix aren't going to give a 6 part documentary and £90 million to MM, the actress and activist, without her connection to the RF. They are biting the hand that feeds.

It's like they need to find more reasons to validate their hatred. It's easy to ignore things you truly hate, it's easy to not press play.

I've watched 2 episodes so far and agreed with a previous poster that said the trailer didn't do the show any favours. I'm enjoying it so far. I started watching out of curiosity to see what all the media fuss is about. I think those that like Harry and Meghan will like the programme and those that don't won't. Those that don't like Harry and Meghan won't allow themselves to see that they are a lovely, happy and natural couple. I don't feel as though anything I've seen so far deserves the fuss that is being made in the media.

There really aren't many hateful posts, and if you see any remaining you really should report them for deletion.

I think there's an assumption that there are hate-filled posters, but it's not borne out if you look at what people are saying, not what you think they must mean

(yes I know I'm going to get bits quoted back at me - but before you do, why do you want to be republishing it, rather than getting it deleted?)

11plusprep1 · 09/12/2022 21:38

yes , watched it and really liked it too.

JemimaTiggywinkles · 09/12/2022 21:43

With the press, it’s worth remembering that foreign press published topless photos of Catherine sunbathing on a private holiday. No paper in the UK published them. Diana died being chased by photographers in Paris, not the UK. Meghan’s father and sister sold photos / stories to the US papers. The documentary focussed on the UK press (who were pretty vile at times) but many of the worst excesses of the press coverage of the royal family aren’t based in the UK.

Things that incite emotion are not meant to be ignored. It's a human response and it's there for a reason.

LikeTearsInRain · 09/12/2022 21:44

I did. It was fantastic to get a true perspective and not Daily Mail insider source hearsay and lies and racist rhetoric

We know majority of people hate their in-laws for variety of reasons and it's the story of every house. But Meghan is not allowed to that.
I am not usually interested in royal documentaries but this one I have watched it. It's horrible to see Daily mail tried to twist every word of Meghan in headlines. There is bigger picture shown in documentary about brutal british media which is true. Few traditions and rules of Royal family which everyone knows anyone . I don't understand why people are taking it in wrong way.

Agree it's a bullying tactic attempting to censor and silence posters with different views by using the technique of a populist short-hand - in this case "Haters" - as you say there is a report function for hate speech on MN - be responsible call it out and get it removed when you see it.....the reality is it's rarely there just different objective view points that the self declared stans want silenced and censored.

Oh god just seen a clip on tiktok of where she does that exaggerated curtsey saying that’s how she greeted the Queen when she met her for the first time. I’m actually cringing for her. Because I’m sure she’s not stupid enough to have done anything like that…..so why lie about it? Even Harry looked super uncomfortable. I mean he must know she’s a pathological liar.

I'm sure you're not stupid enough to think she was acting out the exact curtesy she did to the Queen?

I don't know what the clip on TikTok shows, but she was talking about the exaggerated curtesy they see in America from the medieval times and that's what her only point of reference was when Harry sprung on her that she needed to curtesy to her when they were going to meet.

The most surprising thing for me was that M went to Botswana for a week with H when they'd met twice? One of which was an hour's drinks and the other dinner. I can't imagine doing that with a virtual stranger.

I hate to admit it, but I judge this. Even at the time it came out.

But I am in no place to be judging anyone, so it is hypocritical of me.

Margot78 · 09/12/2022 22:38

All felt a bit too contrived for me - “It’s a nice night. Just picking some roses.” Cringe. All the Insta perfect photos and gushing friends just made it feel like propaganda. They seem to record every moment - Meghan was even phoning a friend as ‘H’ proposed, which was a bit weird but possibly not as weird as wanting to spend your last night of ‘freedom’ at a Halloween party with princess Eugenie.

Most annoying thing was the patronising lesson on the British Empire and the portrayal of Britain as some kind of racist dystopian nightmare. Of course Britain has the complex and damming legacy of slavery and there are under currents of racism within our society that do rear their ugly head more often than we’d like. But by and large, Britain is a diverse and tolerant society and if their role as royals didn’t work out, it was probably more to do with their unsuitability for it. Can’t see any great shocks coming with the next episode, it’s all a bit dull.
