I watched it out of curiosity. I would say I’m fairly neutral towards them. I mean, none of us know them and very few really understand how the RF works, though that issue does intrigue me.
I have a lot of sympathy for the press intrusion. I completely accept there was a racist element in the treatment of M. I do imagine you must need to be of a certain outlook to cope with marrying into the RF.
I think the majority in the U.K. are supportive or at least acquiescent to the RF. There is a lot of defensiveness to any criticism of the institution which has of course fuelled the backlash against H&M.
All of that said though, I don’t really understand why either of them didn’t see this coming? Why didn’t H prepare her more given his says that his priority was protecting her? And I mean, she didn’t research and consider what this would mean for her as they grew closer? I mean, all grown ups assess practical things/differences in lifestyle when they think about committing to any relationship, however much “in love” they are.
I think they were also both motivated and wanting a joint platform to advance the issues they champion. Which is fair enough but doing that as royals does of course mean doing it the royal way. I mean, not to trash them as individuals, but why do they deserve a platform outside of royal life?
The whole idea that they could come into it, do it their way, be naive as to the media (I'm not claiming it’s right, but why would they expect it to be different?) was just incredibly naive. As was the idea that they could be half in half out. In what world did H think the Queen and Charles sign off on that?
So I find it all a bit sad, but not sure what they want to happen. Hopefully they’ll have feel they’ve said their piece and everyone can move on.
