Harry and Meghan's show is number 1 on Netflix in the UK and US. Did you watch it people of Mumsnet?

It may have a high amount of views but the reviews that people are leaving speak volumes. 2.1/5 summary on Google, 3.2/10 on IMDband 38% on Rotton Tomatoes.
2.4m watched the first episode, 1.5 the second and 800k the third. Netflix is known for binge watch shows. People seem to be turning off.

Similar retention numbers for the Crown. I find these breakdowns interesting, thank you.

1.1 million viewers for it's first episode.
666,000 stayed to watch the second episode
300,000 watched Episode 3.
Episode 4 garnered around 147,000 viewers while
Episode 5 dropped below the 100k mark to 66,000.

I think you watch my kind of stuff!

I did watch one episode of the Harry and Meghan programme and found it quite dull.
Might watch more if I fancy watching something and the kids are around.

I have to laugh. My oldest inspecting classes for next semester. One of her.arts choices is a class about vampire movies.

Where was this when I was in college?

Soft music, arty shots and scripted questions with badly acted answers. It is a complete embarrassment. Hollywood does …. What…I don’t even know what it’s meant to be.

a blatant money-making jaunt from the couple who are desperate for a private life.

What a fucking joke. The Queen must be turning in her grave.

LemonSwan · 09/12/2022 18:49

No I don’t think it was that, although interesting perspective.

I am really struggling to square it in my mind so I will just blab on for a sec and it might not make any sense. Apologies if so.

Like why did she have to sneak across London, why did he not just send a car. Why did he not tell her about curtesying until driving up the drive and in hindsight why is he still giggling about that rather than feeling embarrassed he’s not prepared her for any of it. And not just these two things. It seemed thing after thing.

I don’t want to say he set her up to fail because that seems quite harsh and I do think he really loves her. But it does seem there’s something odd going on as don’t think he’s stupid or useless and Megan strikes me as someone who would communicate her needs quite clearly and upfront - like ‘it’s such a nightmare getting across from the airport and sneaking in’. They are clearly good at communicating to each other what’s upsetting them.

Maybe there’s some kind of subliminal wanted to set them both up to leave the royal family and/or blow up and take revenge on the media. Or somehow to share solace in all things he hates about his life so wanted her to experience it as fully as possible. Or maybe it’s deeper than that and Harry didn’t want to tell her all these crazy things properly as didn’t want to scare her away so was like faux naive ‘oh I didn’t know other families don’t curtesy and that most people have no idea how to curtesy’ or maybe even it was a ‘oh how different am I’ way similar to how Megan talked about those men who make a women wait half hour but in a different way. A way to show how superior he is.

Or my most sinister of thoughts is that he was purposefully failing to help and allowing these challenges and surprises as was trying to condition her for bigger and worse surprises. Kind of how abuse starts low level and gets progressively worse. But not direct abuse, more allowing indirect abuse he could have somewhat helped to shelter/ warn her from.

I just don’t know. Even rereading that it’s incomprehensible and I have no idea where I am going. Maybe the next 3 episodes will help me square it a bit more.

Interesting thoughts. Re. not sending a car I assumed he didn't want anyone to be able to leak their relationship and he'd need to tell at least the driver, plus his drivers likely also have paps watching them come and go because of who they are transporting.

I did think it was odd he didn't tell her about the curtsy, but if she used to dance I think you would assume you knew how to do it and he didn't want to make a bid deal? I mean, surely you'd just google it if you didn't, it doesn't need much practise!

I don't obviously believe she did the curtsy the way she showed, I took it as an exaggeration because she felt ridiculous doing it and maybe went too far at the time. It came across as she was taking the piss out of having to do it tbh.

But I know as much as anyone so it's all just guessing! I just prefer not to automatically think the worst (not aimed at you, but the more 'excitable' posters on the thread) and take part in a witch hunt. No matter what anyone thinks, they are human beings with feelings.

Junejolie · 09/12/2022 19:04

This is such blatant pr. The shoe is crap, plot line a bore, two sad people throwing a tantrum again and again. Who cares?

beatsin8s · 09/12/2022 19:04

Just to add, obviously I know it's not a dance curtsy! Meant you should have a rough idea.

username8888 · 09/12/2022 19:05

No. I have netflix, but wouldn't want to waste nearly 3 hours of my life. Quite happy to get updates in the media.

Not only that the trailers and the clips, with the soft focus lens and the plinky plonky music would necessitate a sick bag.

Tantrum? sometimes I wonder what some of you watched. People sitting calmly and speaking to their experiences is a tantrum😓

Cringey with a side of nastiness. Digs at his family for having to marry a type implying their love story is the one true love story is a bit teenage for two 40 year odds. He visisibly ages and looks more miserable and shrunken with every outing. I'm hoping she read the room wrong with that mocking curtsey as he was clearly ashamed of her.
Some relationships bring out the best in each other and some the worst their relationship is clearly the second. I feel sorry for him she's obviously in charge and he can't stand up to her. Divorces start with contempt and watching this I think she's not far off that first step.

Oh dear, the Divorce narrative again 😣

First people gave it three years, then five. I guess the goalposts will keep moving.

Thanks for watching though 😅

It was a very slick curation and performance likely intending to turn around the back lash from the OW interview by both correcting specific content and delivering a more considered personal presentation.

I suspect that they have studied how they were perceived in that interview and have worked hard to present a different / better persona. PH is roughly the same but MM doesn't appear to be the same person at all.

I think they achieved this aim - as they both came across better - calmer, more reflective, less angry and bitter.

Although the veiled / barbed comments re K positioned so subtly as to be plausible deniability if ever called out are v revealing of MM having spiteful / vexatious / manipulative traits which many will have seen, sensed and clocked before. Unnecessary really. Likely shot herself in the foot there.

I am surprised that MM said previously that it wasn't how she would have to told it because for these first 3 episodes at least it looked polished - maybe the show down is next week?

They covered the context of toxic racism in the U.K. MSM, SM, parts of the general public and politics well and how this had a huge negative impact on MM and their relationship.

Is next week likely to be about racism in the family and the palace more generally and how they colluded with media racism either actively or passively?

What jarred for me was PH to not taking this opportunity to apologise after 13 years for his own repeated racist abuse of his colleagues for calling them p*kis and ragheads and how he lied saying he had "learned" from a previous incident (Nazi uniform) and becoming aware of his own unconscious bias.

Also how MM expressed the trauma of witnessing her own mother being called the N word whilst she is sat next to the man she married who used equally offensive racial slurs repeatedly.

Yes, it felt very scripted which increased my overall annoyance. I get they’re allowed to have it scripted but it was the faux surprise and ott expressions, etc.

Yes and to be honest, regardless of his place in the RF, IMHO, H isn’t wrong in wanting to escape the British media and go and live in the US.
Imagine growing up knowing (or believing if your a conspiracy theorist) that the media was responsible for your mother’s death and you had to face them constantly and they hounded the rest of your family, took pictures when you were 11 (?) outside grieving your mother and calling your name for a photo.
Wouldn't anyone want to escape? He never asked for press intrusion, he couldn’t help what he was born into.

LemonSwan · 09/12/2022 19:47

Sorry, I don't understand the conspiracy theory part? It was because of being chased by the media. The conspiracy theory I kept hearing was that the Queen planned it (of course, she did not!)

Agree with everything else you've said, though.

TheTantrumoftheToddlerIsThere · 09/12/2022 19:49

I watched the first episode. I found it boring and cloying.

My decision on whether to carry on with it will be based on the release of volume 2. If there are any bombshells or better reviews, I will power through to them. If not, I’ll abandon it completely.

Blondbombsite · 09/12/2022 19:50

Overall I think they came out of it much better than the Oprah interview. It was a bit dull though and I won’t want the next three unless there’s something new. I do think Meghan has some issues with the truth and I don’t believe that she wasn’t allowed to invite Ashleigh (or that she’d go along with that) and I didn’t believe that she’d remembered that poem. I thought she was laughing at herself with the curtesy but Harry’s face was definitely interesting and he didn’t look impressed.

I think Harry is very much in love and in awe of Meghan and I think he really does see Diana in her.

Blondbombsite · 09/12/2022 19:52

The engagement story didn’t ring true for me either. Kate and William got married abroad so I don’t see why they couldn’t, I also found the filming/ live-streaming of it rather odd (but that’s just my personal opinion).

WillMellorsHips · 09/12/2022 19:54

Jesus @tatala are you on the production crew? Your gushiness is unreal /OTT/not very British - are you American by any chance? 😂😂😂

notanotheroneagain · 09/12/2022 19:54

So wild to me that everyone makes such a big deal about her taking a piss on herself for exaggerating the curtsy, when no one bet an eyelid when Mike actually the piss.

I read the car thing as her sneaking across London to be after the relationship broke and so she was being hunted by the paparazzi. Maybe I understood incorrectly or it was poor editing.

Re. How she did the curtesy, I agree it probably wasn’t like that. But maybe it was haha. I would have no idea how to curtesy so might do something similar.

The Harry look during her curtesy was weird but going to give benefit of doubt there that he might have just seen something in the background and looked up and it wasn’t as meaningful as expression as everyone thinks.

Your right it’s all complete guesswork. Who knows anything about this, but then they have invited us to view their reality - 6 hours of it. And I don’t think I have ever watched 6 whole hours of something without dissecting it to some degree in my mind.

Re. Thinking the worse - You can tell I like thrillers, scandi noir dramas etc. 🤣 I do have a bias towards uncovering some underlying plot twist when it’s likely all much more simple than that.

But still it’s fascinating. Once I settled into the Americanness of Meghan I actually found her quite believable. And it was Harry I thought a bit odd/ off. Which surprised me tbh.

Will be interesting to see final episodes.

Thanks for your thoughts. Not a fan of the Diana/Meghan comparisons even by Harry himself but he knows both women better than I do 😐
