The royal family

Why do people feel it’s okay to say nasty things about Meghan on social media?

Why do people care so much about her and Harry’s relationship and are so intent on just being incredibly nasty about someone they don’t even know or really know the truth about? Harry must love her and be happy so why don’t the media and people on social media just let them be?

genuinely asking as I don’t understand why she gets so much hatred everywhere, must be really bloody hard for them to see it all the time. People act like she’s a murderer or something.

It doesn't work like that in the world of celebrity, if they wanted to be left alone they wouldn't have done a chat show with Oprah and then sold their family out to the highest bidder.

They have put themselves front and centre and their behaviour is seen by many as very questionable (inc me). If you put yourself in the public domain like that then expect any hypocrisy to be called out and your behaviour questioned. I don't hate them at all, I just don't like them.

Goawayquickly · 08/12/2022 21:18

Safety in numbers maybe, people like to join in. It reminds me of high school when the queen bee would decide to pick on whoever for no apparent reason and everyone else joined in and didn’t really know why, just wanting to be in with the crowd.
So many people who are ‘not interested’ in H&M but can’t resist commenting on threads about them. So many people commenting on a Netflix series they ‘won’t watch because…’ but have a strong opinion on, it’s quite bizarre and really quite concerning.

I think it is because she is making money from sown if division between Harry and his family. It is not very honorable behavior. She seems to have a destructive personality. There are people in the world that try and build bridges and those that ostracize people and she seems to be very much the in the latter category

Sowing division

(especially the ones who think they understand her 'personality')

Sunglasses8 · 08/12/2022 21:25

They’re putting themselves out there for it deliberately. Their whole media brand is about what was “done to” them, not what they’re doing now that has nothing to do with the RF.

Basically, their brand is complaining and airing dirty laundry. When that’s your brand, people will do the same to you.

For what it’s worth, I do not like the British press and think they treated her badly. I am NOT a royalist and think the RF should go, they’re a drain, not good people and perpetuate a horrible class system. And I think that there is a race problem in the uk. I also dislike H and M. All things can be true!

Lilyyy · 08/12/2022 21:25

I just find it so bizarre because how does anyone really know what MM’s intentions are? The public seem to think they know her and how awful she is but is she really? Maybe she does just love Harry and they do have genuine concerns for safety, or she could think she’s hit the jackpot marrying a prince and has ulterior motives and is a narcissist who’s taken Harry away from his family. Who knows. Just don’t agree with the abuse.

None of the shows today have been anti-royal family. They have not spoken badly about any member nor revealed any secrets. Not sure how thay can be seen as division.

VladmirsPoutine · 08/12/2022 21:26

If she was fully white there'd of course be some terrible posts about her online much like any celeb but that she's half black, American and married into the royal family means she's had ideas stratosphere's above her station. The vitriol about her really does transcend the typical 'hate' discourse about people in the public eye. I am no fan of royalty or Meghan per se, but I absolutely hope she is thoroughly enjoying her wonderful life with her beautiful kids and husband.

And just to pre-empt the 'ItZ n0T aBöUt RaYsĘ I jUs' dOWn't lYk hERR' - yes it's about race even if you don't realise it.

Sunglasses8 · 08/12/2022 21:26

I also think the abuse is abhorrent, btw! I’m not defending it. Just explaining why I think it continues.

Sunglasses8 · 08/12/2022 21:27

I agree that it is about race too.

The whole RF should GO. Why is it still a thing?!?!?

ArsonFire · 08/12/2022 21:28

They call each other "H" and "M"
They deserve everything they get.

Yes. A thousand times this.

onlylarkin · 08/12/2022 21:29

Online abuse happens all over the world, IMO, because it allows people a degree of anonymity. No consequences for things they say.

The sad thing, to me, is that this actually shows the true nature of people. The face these people show the world is a different one then what they really are. Anonymity allows people's true colors to show.

stillvicarinatutu · 08/12/2022 21:30

I'm watching the documentary now - on ep 3 and I STILL like them !
I don't get the vitriol for a couple with a young family , yes privileged, but no more so than half of Hollywood, when people don't even know them .

It actually gives me a grain of comfort to know even within a royal family there are normal issues with in-laws, traditions, bickering, disagreements, and ultimately I admire Harry for standing up for his family and what he believes in.

If the whole royal family , I think he is the most human , empathetic and emotionally intelligent.

Redwineandroses · 08/12/2022 21:30

I just saw something (on tiktok) of her criticising the RF for their lack of "hugging." As in their formal polite greetings aren't just a public thing, they are like it in private too.

What a dick. That's not a RF thing, I know plenty of people who aren't "huggers" when greeting someone, especially English people. Americans are renowned for being more touchy feeling in greeting so her comments were just stupid.

StormzyinaTCup · 08/12/2022 21:31

I think I have been very even-handed with my allocation of criticism, they are both as bad as each other.

Colcat · 08/12/2022 21:31

Why does Meghan feel it's ok to damn a whole nation in a documentary broadcast to the world?

Blondlashes · 08/12/2022 21:33

Think about celebs that really you hear very little about Roy Kean for example. And others who only pop up occasionally or for publicity eg Adele,
Joss Stone, Gary Barlow, Cher
this makes it clear it’s possible to live life out of the limelight.
H&M are crying privacy but then doing the opposite and then the Netflix $$$. It’s not good to abuse them on social medial. However they are hypocritical at worse and disingenuous at best.

stillvicarinatutu · 08/12/2022 21:33

A tik tok snippet can be taken out of context- I watched what she was saying about that in the documentary and she didn't come across badly - she was saying she didn't quite know how to react because she thought the "front " was just that and didn't realise the level of decorum would co tongue behind closed doors- and I got that . If you're used to a touchy feely way of being (as I think Harry is and Diana was) that must be a bit of a shock within a family .

onlylarkin · 08/12/2022 21:34

She did not criticize from not hugging. She explained the cultural difference between her, as a American, and the RF.

This is really why this social media abuse continues. Because people actually believe what others say on SM without actually doing the simple thing, watching the actual program.

There is a huge difference between fair criticism and personal attacks though

saying “I find it hypocritical that they take so many flights” is way different to “I think she’s a c*nt”

interestingly, someone has already said the latter about her on this very thread. So unnecessary

My opinion in an entire country was changed long before Meghan said a word. That changed based on people's own words on sites like MN.

BlackFriday · 08/12/2022 21:37

I think you're over-simplifying things a tad here, OP.
It's WAY more complicated than you think. Why not listen to some of the debates raging and inform yourself?
