Why do people feel it’s okay to say nasty things about Meghan on social media?

Why do people care so much about her and Harry’s relationship and are so intent on just being incredibly nasty about someone they don’t even know or really know the truth about? Harry must love her and be happy so why don’t the media and people on social media just let them be?

genuinely asking as I don’t understand why she gets so much hatred everywhere, must be really bloody hard for them to see it all the time. People act like she’s a murderer or something.

It doesn't work like that in the world of celebrity, if they wanted to be left alone they wouldn't have done a chat show with Oprah and then sold their family out to the highest bidder.

They have put themselves front and centre and their behaviour is seen by many as very questionable (inc me). If you put yourself in the public domain like that then expect any hypocrisy to be called out and your behaviour questioned. I don't hate them at all, I just don't like them.

Well they did try to just do one and live quietly over the pond didn’t they? But the vitriol and rumours and gossip just carried on and on. No doubt they got fed up in the end and thought enough was enough, time to put their side across . I can’t blame them. I think a lot of it has been to do with racist tabloid rags.

converseandjeans · 08/12/2022 21:52

I agree with you. I have no idea why people are so obsessed and hate filled?

It's interesting looking back at the family holidays where they were stalked by the press & how Harry was followed at school.

I think he has been damaged by the intrusion of the press and the connection with the death of his mother. It's hard to watch a small 12 year old who just lost his mother being forced to shake hands with sobbing members of the public & then follow her coffin by foot in front of thousands of people.

I haven't seen any criticism of the Royal Family - it's more about press intrusion & bullying on social media. I understand why they want to have their say.

Rushingfool · 08/12/2022 21:52

I don't know why people like to be unpleasant about other people online, but I often think how awful it might have been for Wallis Simpson had there been social media back then. Even now I never hear a good thing about her.

A 3/4 minute video of her speaking in an interview is hardly a "snippet."

It is when it is from 3 hours of video.

Much of this series was visual. Screen shots, press videos, etc. Meaning, you had to see/read the screen in order to get everything.

I truly do not understand someone who is so invested in the story itself, but refuses to watch it.

I'm watching the documentary now - on ep 3 and I STILL like them !
I don't get the vitriol for a couple with a young family , yes privileged, but no more so than half of Hollywood, when people don't even know them .

It actually gives me a grain of comfort to know even within a royal family there are normal issues with in-laws, traditions, bickering, disagreements, and ultimately I admire Harry for standing up for his family and what he believes in.

If the whole royal family , I think he is the most human , empathetic and emotionally intelligent.

Totally agree. I like them even more after watching this. Yes the 3 episodes are a schmaltzy love story, yes it's very american, yes it's self indulgent, yes they should leave it after this... but nothing in this documentary is particularly slagging off members of the RF. Just the ghastly press and a bit about the Institution.
I don 't like silencing people. I'm glad they've done this. Perhaps it can pull the RF into the 21st century. By god it needs it.

Meghan comes across as warm and fun. I've given up trying to work out why the vile hate spread about her. I honestly think it's become an addictive habit for some on MN. It's part of their day. Find something to aim vitriol at Meghan about. Endless, unsavoury, nasty, and partly racist. (Please note the partly word. Not everyone. But we see the ones where it is obvious)

SD1978 · 08/12/2022 21:54

'Leave us alone' talk on Oprah about brief stint as a working Royal, with obvious lies. 'Leave us alone' podcast with comment about brief stint as working Royal. 'Leave us alone' Netflix deal rehashing the same experiences already said about brief stint as working Royal, also with lies/ exaggerations that can be proved........that's why. And I say that as someone not actually invested who sees all the media stuff

It was interesting to learn that the agreement with the press goes back onky 30 years or so. The comment from the journalist that said W and H, B & E were the first generation to come out of this agreement is very telling.

The strangest thing they have done is participate in the queen's funeral. Harry maybe as she was his grandmother, but even still it was strange. But Megan could have watched or mourned in private as a non member of the RF, or they could have attended the private funeral later that day. Strange how she participated the way she did as she allegedly hates the whole institution of to RF but there she was in a car with Sophie in the funeral. 🤔

Meghan has always said that the Queen was good to her.

I loathe ny MIL, but I would still go to her funeral to support my husband.

To you, she was Queen. To them she was granny.

Redwineandroses · 08/12/2022 21:40

And give them ratings? I thought thet wanted to live a private life...

They never said that. You really don't understand about privacy do you?

If i burst into your home by kicking the door down. That's invading your privacy.

If you decide you want me to come round, invite me, open the door and welcome me. That isn't.

FFS she doesn’t hate the institution. Of course she had to be there as Harry’s wife. More TikTok bollocks?

stillvicarinatutu · 08/12/2022 22:00

Yep rousette

I agree , they both appear lovely , warm, empathetic, relatable, nice decent people. I really warm to them both . And the vitriol and racist hate toward them is inexcusable.
They've not slated anyone in this
Documentary, they told a story from their perspective and actually the private selfies warm the cockles of my heart - they're so normal ! And you can see how much they have each other's back and the warmth and love they have - good on them . Something real and tangible in a stuffy , regimented regime of a family full of fuck ups like any other - Harry has married for love . And it shows .

They don't hate the royal family. They hate the intrusion from the press. They did not said a single negative word about the royal family in the documentary

Youwhatnowffs · 08/12/2022 22:00

They could have been such forces of good for so many causes, it is such a waste that they chose to sell out for celebrity status (whilst attempting to claim they were doing it for privacy🤦🏼‍♀️).

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/12/2022 22:00

Redwineandroses · 08/12/2022 21:30

I just saw something (on tiktok) of her criticising the RF for their lack of "hugging." As in their formal polite greetings aren't just a public thing, they are like it in private too.

What a dick. That's not a RF thing, I know plenty of people who aren't "huggers" when greeting someone, especially English people. Americans are renowned for being more touchy feeling in greeting so her comments were just stupid.

I think you’re missing the point. She was trying to show how everything was new and different for her, even down to the more formal British way of doing things. I’ve seen the episode where she mentions this and I don’t see her criticising it at all - she was trying to demonstrate her naïveté and how she felt awkward not quite knowing how things were done.

but yeah, some parts of the media are reporting that as being her complaining that they weren’t like her. People read that type of press coverage of the series and then tell their mates “oh I don’t like her, I saw that she was moaning about how they were stiff and awkward when she first met Will and Kate.”

Honestly, it’s a sheeple thing. Formulate your own opinions rather than borrowing someone else’s, maybe?

If she was fully white there'd of course be some terrible posts about her online much like any celeb but that she's half black, American and married into the royal family means she's had ideas stratosphere's above her station. The vitriol about her really does transcend the typical 'hate' discourse about people in the public eye. I am no fan of royalty or Meghan per se, but I absolutely hope she is thoroughly enjoying her wonderful life with her beautiful kids and husband.

And just to pre-empt the 'ItZ n0T aBöUt RaYsĘ I jUs' dOWn't lYk hERR' - yes it's about race even if you don't realise it.

This ^

FrownedUpon · 08/12/2022 22:02

Anyone with any sense can see she is manipulative and attention seeking. It’s awful what she’s doing. The clip of her mocking the Queen because she had to courtesy to her is shameful. Even Harry looks embarrassed at that.

justasking111 · 08/12/2022 22:02

Good list converse 😅

justgettingthroughtheday · 08/12/2022 22:03

To be honest I think that those on here who are spouting hate towards Harry and Meghan are probably from the press!

I appreciate that but I assume your mil wouldn't have a state funeral live all around the road where you'd be seen participating in the "circus " family institution you're trying so hard to criticisise and accuse of treating you so badly.

They could have mourned and honoured granny without participating in the institutional state funeral.

maddy68 · 08/12/2022 22:03

I have binge watched all three episodes tonight. I have to say they both come across very well (with imperfections the same as everyone )

They never said leave them alone though did they? Throughout this series they said they want to continue doing things in the public eye for various causes they’re passionate about. They just don’t ageee with the constant press intrusion and demands for every detail of their life
