Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

He has lost his mum. I think he knows fine about suffering after losing his father fairly recently too.

We are mere mortals. All the riches or fancy pillars in the world can’t stop the pain of losing those you love.

So true. I also think there can be an even deeper element of loss when your last living parent dies.

I think he mentioned their names to leave no doubt that they were not being given titles and they were ‘out’ and then he wished them well. It stops people surmising what might/could happen.

It will be interesting to see how they react to that, I assume they can still use their Duke/ Duchess titles and whether they will style their children as prince and princess.
Charles seems to be moving quickly and seems quite decisive in what he wants to happen, changes to be made etc.

It's the British royal family, you're aware of that right? I am Welsh and it's probably a coincidence but out of the people I grew up with and know the ones who harp on about this sort of thing are also the most miserable.

Actually I'm happy just wanted to make the point they didn't need to have prince of wales.

British? What is that?

Flockbee · 09/09/2022 21:03

Camilla looked absolutely devastated today; I don't think she relishes what is coming.

Bless her, you can tell she loves him dearly and not because of his role. I think because so many people were obsessed with Diana it's probably quite daunting being that exposed to the public, but I'm sure she will do well she seems to have a good support network

Nope I'm not 100% welsh I have Cornish ancestors who relocated when the tin mines closed to work in the coal mines.

The title needs to die because it as created to say fuck you to the Welsh.

You'll know all about the twelve tribes then. We had plenty of princes once upon a time. 😂😂

@SiannyMarne

So you don’t see us as one country? How is this a ‘fuck you’ to Wales in any way. They are offering you the services of the heir to the throne. And in that showing the importance of Wales as part of the United Kingdom.

Again, have you ever read anything at all about how the western kingdoms of Britain came to be known as Wales? Because it didn’t exists as a country until the early medieval period and only then for a short time.

I find Welsh nationalism odd. You are fighting an enemy that disappeared centuries ago- the Normans invaded us as well you know!

I think you haven't relay got a gripe on history of the "British Isle" from that. Yo have no real idea of Wales or what it is to be Welsh.

And we don't need any now or emojis unless you are 12

I don't think it's clear that they are entitled to Prince and Princess, they were not born as grandchildren of the Sovereign through the male line. Others who were titled Princess at birth as a grandchild of the Sovereign through the male line did not lose that title when they ceased to be a grandchild of the Sovereign. A third child of H and M would though if the parents wanted it.

You don’t have to be born as a grandchild of the monarch.

You are entitled to the HRH and Prince/ss title if you are a legitimate male line grandchild when your grandparent takes the throne in your lifetime, is on the throne when you are born or has been on the thrown previously when you are born.

George V had numerous grandchildren born after he died who were still titled, Princess Alexandra as one example. Your Granny or Grandad just has to be on the throne at some point.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:10

Oh dear @Legrandsophie . Looks like the 'no true Welshman' argument has been invoked.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:11

@SiannyMarne

You do know that most of the population of England are ‘Welsh’.

It was just a term that developed to differentiate the western kingdoms of Britain from the newer Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the west.

DNA testing of burial sites has now shown that the Anglo Saxons didn’t bring over hoards of people but married into local communities. Many English are direct descendants of the original Britons- who spoke the same insular Celtic language that eventually developed into Welsh.

If you want to be mad at anyone then be mad at the Romans who destroyed the sacred enclosures on Anglesey. Now that is a war crime.

You have no idea what it is to be subjugated it would take an eternity to wipe out the insult. It would be so easy to say yes it has been a bit shit lets drop that title.

Can I just say, English society was all but a annihilated in 1066 when a foreign force invaded and took the crown. So we do have a very good idea of what it's like to be subjugated.

I wept through it. It was very emotional and heartfelt. And then when it went to the church service it was all too much. I found myself missing my mum who died many years ago, and had a sense of how all we have known has changed.

Im very pleased about William and Kate. And although I have no time for Harry and Meghan his heartfelt words showed that his love as a father is undimmed.

I know exactly what you mean. My Mum died in 2013 and she was a big Royalist and would have been glued to the television today. I would have loved to talk to her about it. I've cried every time I've watched the television and I thought the speech tonight was perfect. How he managed to greet the people at the gates of the Palace and make a speech, I have no idea. I was a complete wreck when my Mum died and I would have liked to hide away and not speak to anyone.

j712adrian · 09/09/2022 21:15

Another Little Englander as Prince of Whales.

Look up what happened in 1969 if you don't know.

I'm not mad at anyone I just think it's time to retire a title the English used to humiliate a subjugate nation.

Maybe we all are decedents of Adam and Eve who actually cares? But why keep using a title that was created to kick part of the country in the nut?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:16

That would have had more force if you'd spelled Wales right.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:17

@SiannyMarne

I’ve spent the last two years studying the history of Wales, Welsh myth and the invasions of Britain.

We are Brythonic if we are anything. If we are going to hold old grudges then shall we ask the Irish to return Bendigeidfran’s cauldron? Or shall we write stern notes to the Catholic Church to ask them to remove Tintern Abbey as a hostile outpost of Christian oppression? The church did more to wipe out Brythonic culture than the Romans and the Normans put together.

Excellent a really good use of two years.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:21

I love Wales with all my heart. But let’s not pretend that it is no different to Cornwall or Cumbria which are two other old Brythonic kingdoms that, like the rest of England, eventually feel to Norman rule.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:22

@SiannyMarne

I think so. Do you have any questions about Welsh history for me? You seem to need some pointers.

Not at all descended from Norman/Viking then?

Lets band together against the bustard Normans and stop them using the title of Prince of Wales

A580Hojas · 09/09/2022 21:24

Absolutely beautiful speech. First time I've shed a little tear over HRH's death.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:26

Lets band together against the bustard Normans

The RF are Hanoverians. We haven't had a Norman monarch since 1135. I reckon you'd have a job to find any Normans to band together against.
