Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

@SiannyMarne

I think so. Do you have any questions about Welsh history for me? You seem to need some pointers.

Who do you regard as the last true prince of Wales?
How do you see the suppression of the Welsh language as being detrimental to the country? And when was it enacted?
How was the of the rise of Methodism influential on both the welsh language and nationalism?

Lets band together against the bustard Normans

The RF are Hanoverians. We haven't had a Norman monarch since 1135. I reckon you'd have a job to find any Normans to band together against.

Who are descended from the Tudors and Plantagenets before them.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:30

You'd still have a job finding any Normans. Taking it out on descendants isn't really fair play.

I'm clearly in a minority about the Prince and Princess of Wales thing, but Charles of all people should know that it will not go down well in Wales.

Great news. Smile I am also glad he acknowledged Harry and Meghan. Smile Archie and Lilibet are promoted to Prince and Princess now too. Smile

Pigeonpair1 · 09/09/2022 21:33

I felt he purposefully mentioned M&H to try to stop the inevitable press speculation over their presence (or lack of it) at events over the next few days (them not being welcome etc). Doesn't want some of the rabid press taking away from remembering The Queen.

I thought it was a fantastic speech, even though it made me cry - again! And he ended with that wonderful line from "Hamlet".

William & Catherine will be an excellent Prince & Princess of Wales.

An iconic line also famous for appearing in Blackadder.

Thought it was a mistake not giving the reins to William but that was a classy speech. If he maintains that who knows it may be a smooth transition.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:36

So if he knows it won't go down well, why is Charles deliberately upsetting the Welsh then? (or at least those representatives of that nation that have graced us with their presence and opinions).

landofgiants · 09/09/2022 21:36

@SiannyMarne diolch!

“I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

Getting to bits of info across, they may lose their titles and they will stay abroad.

Nope why should we ? twelve year old use of emoji

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:39

Sianny, I get it you're upset but stop acting like the thread police, telling people not to use emojis. Are you a teacher, by any chance?

I'm not upset I just don't think emojis are a a good argument to a serious debate. Do you?

I don't understand where he suggested they might lose their titles? He referred to both his sons and daughters in law by their first names only. Why would Harry lose his title?

Haven't heard anyone moaning about it except for on this thread.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:43

@SiannyMarne

I think in the sense that you mean that there has only ever been one ‘true’ (if you mean widely acclaimed by all the Welsh kingdoms) Prince of Wales, which is Gruffydd ap Llywelyn. The rest were all princes of Gwynedd with a lot of influence.

And the last of that line died childless in the Tower of London, much like the last Plantagenet king of England.

I do actually agree that language suppression is detrimental. In the same way I think it barbaric to suppress Cornish and Scots Gaelic. So much has been lost.

The language suppression started much earlier than the Norman invasion really. The early forays by the church in Rome tried to establish Latin (as it did in most places). But real efforts didn’t start until the end of the 18th century. It wouldn’t have helped the Normans anyway. At that point in time there were so many varying dialects of Middle English that they were almost like different languages.

And I think the adoption of Methodism makes sense for a country that had such and active Celtic church. It took to church in Rome and the Roman bishops a long time to persuade the Celtic church to adopt its version of Christianity. The old Brythonic and Gaelic nations always did like something more aesthetic.

Sorry dyslexics and drinking I totally withdraw all my arguments against it being a shite Move

Was wondering where that missing sock was.

MissMarpleRocks · 09/09/2022 21:44

God my country was invaded & divided just under 50 years ago. Im not as angry as you Sianny in their attempt to subjugate even though my grandparents had to flee.
And that’s in my lifetime. And I remember it & the fear of my parents about my grandparents.
Maybe it’s time for you to let it go. It’s been 700 years.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:45

Doesn't matter what you think. If other people want to use them they can. The extent to which posters on this site seem to want to police other people is ridiculous.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:11

@SiannyMarne

You do know that most of the population of England are ‘Welsh’.

It was just a term that developed to differentiate the western kingdoms of Britain from the newer Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the west.

DNA testing of burial sites has now shown that the Anglo Saxons didn’t bring over hoards of people but married into local communities. Many English are direct descendants of the original Britons- who spoke the same insular Celtic language that eventually developed into Welsh.

If you want to be mad at anyone then be mad at the Romans who destroyed the sacred enclosures on Anglesey. Now that is a war crime.

Not forgetting the hordes of Vikings who crossed the sea to rape, pillage and murder us

I don't want a Welsh Prince at all I don't want the title used by the English royal family I don't want it to be who is the most Welsh. I think The title is an insult, I think the Title is a continuation of the oppression and subjugation of the Welsh.

I am not nationalistic there is no us and not us.

There is no longer using a title to say fuck you to the Welsh.

The Tudors were indisputably of Welsh descent though? Last time I checked Penmynydd, birthplace of Owen Tudor, the grandfather of Henry VII, was still on Ynys Mon. The current Royal family come from that line, via a circuitous route through the Stuarts in Scotland and Hanover.
