Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

No poor decision and mostly completely ignored on this thread.

Pause think and stop the tradition of having a English Prince of Wales . Put an end to the disrespect started by Edward the First.

VladmirsPoutine · Today 19:35
I feel like we were rushed into it. We didn't get to have a national debate about the future of the monarchy. We should have had a referendum about abolition

I was thinking what a lovely thread this was and then I saw VladmirsPoutine and I knew something unpleasant was coming…..
Vladmirs why don’t you try and organise a referendum?

M and H were the only people he didn't mention by their titles (e.g. Duke and Duchess of Sussex).

I don't think they're going to have them much longer...

No one was mentioned by titles.

He announced new titles.

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 20:42

@SiannyMarne. I'm sorry that you feel like that. I really do think that Charles cares for the Welsh people and their country. I meant that the start of the title of Prince of Wales being given to the heirs of English kings. I meant no insult. But I fear anything I say wouldn't make a difference to how you feel and might just make you more angry. So I'm probably best saying nothing more.

Interesting. Time will tell…

I thought his speech was warm, yet statesmanlike. He struck just the right balance.

A fleeting thought: I wonder how he'll feel the first time the National Anthem is sung and he has to remember to not join in. That'll be a very poignant moment, given how many thousands of times he's sung it in honour of his mother.

His speech was masterful, it addressed head on so many controversial issues and it also gave a mention to H and M.

I'm sure he'll find it odd to hear the Anthem, on TV today I heard from commentators Her Majesty the King and also the Quwing, which I thinks lovely!

It’s been the tradition for over 700 years.

You obviously know nothing about the history of England and Wales!

SnottyLottie · 09/09/2022 18:13

I’m very happy about that.

I’n also happy he mentioned Harry & Meghan in his speech

I think he mentioned their names to leave no doubt that they were not being given titles and they were ‘out’ and then he wished them well. It stops people surmising what might/could happen.

Ok I accept your point. I never seen heard or felt he cares for my people.

I've heard of holding a grudge but 700 years....?

By the English I think I know more of the history of my country than you do.

Oinkypig · 09/09/2022 20:49

@WhereDidYouGoBernedette I am a total NI nationalist/socialist who believes even the 50p a year I pay to support the royal family is too much. I think they should be stripped of titles, lands and monies and get actual jobs. But that speech by Charles would bring a tear to a stone. He hasn’t even buried his mother and is on TV making a speech, who cares if it was rehearsed (in fact imagine having to rehearse a speech you will have to give to the world the day after your mother has died) not that I agree with your assessment of the speech but his mother has just died so whatever way he is perceived/comes across he can have a pass for now.

I don’t know how anyone could watch that and not see the genuine emotion he was feeling, especially toward the end.

I can’t believe I’m posting in support of a Royal but he is so sad.

I wondered if he woild mention Archie and Lilibet. Not sure if they can just start using the titles Prince and Princess for them. Or will they need the go ahead. Cant see the point of them having titles if they are to spend their lives in the USA. A country which doesnt have titles.

I don't think it's clear that they are entitled to Prince and Princess, they were not born as grandchildren of the Sovereign through the male line. Others who were titled Princess at birth as a grandchild of the Sovereign through the male line did not lose that title when they ceased to be a grandchild of the Sovereign. A third child of H and M would though if the parents wanted it.

You have no idea what it is to be subjugated it would take an eternity to wipe out the insult. It would be so easy to say yes it has been a bit shit lets drop that title.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 20:52

What you are doing really winds me up @SiannyMarne

My dad’s family moved from Wales to Northumberland during the coal boom in the 1800s as did many other Welsh families. Populations were much more dynamic than you think. Nationalists like you terrify me because how far back do you have to go to get to what is ‘us’ and what is ‘not us’. Should the people of Welshpool be spitting on the the people just over the border?

I mean crack on if you think you can find a Welsh Prince of Wales descended directly from the last king.

How are you being subjugated? And are you sure you are 100% Welsh?

I mean, my mum’s ancestors got burned off their lands in Ireland and I am not holding a grudge.

EdithWeston · 09/09/2022 20:56

Antarcticant · 09/09/2022 19:49

She could never have been Princess Camilla. Only people born into royalty can be Princess [Firstname]. Had she chosen, she could have styled herself Princess Charles or The Princess of Wales, but not Princess Camilla.

The monarch can create someone as Prince or Princess.

The Duke of Edinburgh renounced his European princedoms to marry the then Princess Elizabeth and in the first years of their marriage he was HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. The Queen created him a prince of the UK in 1957

There was no need to do same for Camilla as they were quite happy for her to bob along as a royal duchess, and now she is HM Queen

thegcatsmother · 09/09/2022 20:56

Camilla looked absolutely devastated today; I don't think she relishes what is coming.

I thought it was a great speech; it affirmed a few points about understanding the role as monarch as opposed to PoW; being Defender of the Faith; laying out the succession, and that there is not currently any intention for the Sussexes to return.

I don't want a Welsh Prince at all I don't want the title used by the English royal family I don't want it to be who is the most Welsh. I think The title is an insult, I think the Title is a continuation of the oppression and subjugation of the Welsh.

I am not nationalistic there is no us and not us.

There is no longer using a title to say fuck you to the Welsh.

Nope I'm not 100% welsh I have Cornish ancestors who relocated when the tin mines closed to work in the coal mines.

The title needs to die because it as created to say fuck you to the Welsh.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:00

If it's going to take an eternity then logic dictates that anything the English do to make you happy isn't actually going to be enough, so why bother? but write to HM about your grievances, I'm sure he'll put it right at the top of the pile.

Incidentally - my family has been in England for centuries. Certainly pre Norman Conquest, so don't talk to me about subjugation. Difference is I'm an adult and don't act like I'm owed special treatment.

It's the British royal family, you're aware of that right? I am Welsh and it's probably a coincidence but out of the people I grew up with and know the ones who harp on about this sort of thing are also the most miserable.

EdithWeston · 09/09/2022 21:01

They have not ceased to be grandchildren of a monarch, just because their grandparent is dead. It is their children who are not grandchildren of a monarch, and the royal style extinguishes

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 21:02

As far as I can see only person subjugating the Welsh lately is Drakeford.

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 21:02

@SiannyMarne

So you don’t see us as one country? How is this a ‘fuck you’ to Wales in any way. They are offering you the services of the heir to the throne. And in that showing the importance of Wales as part of the United Kingdom.

Again, have you ever read anything at all about how the western kingdoms of Britain came to be known as Wales? Because it didn’t exists as a country until the early medieval period and only then for a short time.

I find Welsh nationalism odd. You are fighting an enemy that disappeared centuries ago- the Normans invaded us as well you know!
