Charles has just created William Prince of Wales from today. So one question answered. Good decision.

I thought he spoke exceptionally well, with such humility and humanity. He spoke from the heart, and I was really moved by it.

Totally agree.

The poor man looked broken yet carried through his mums sense of duty amazingly.

I loved his smile when he mentioned Camilla. They really do have a special love for each other.

When Prince Edward married it was announced then that he would become Duke of Edinburgh after the death of both his father and his mother. I think officially Charles has to announce that he is giving the title to him.

I thought his speech was warm, yet statesmanlike. He struck just the right balance.

A fleeting thought: I wonder how he'll feel the first time the National Anthem is sung and he has to remember to not join in. That'll be a very poignant moment, given how many thousands of times he's sung it in honour of his mother.

I feel sad that the opportunity wasn't taken to retire the title "Prince of Wales" . It was used by Edward the First to humiliate the Welsh. The last true Prince of Wales was Owain Glyndŵr or even Llywelyn ap Gruffudd.

The title was created over 700 years ago. I don't think you can take Edward I's intentions and say that they are the intentions of the monarchs of today. These days it is given to honour the Welsh. To show how important Wales is within the Union. Charles said how honoured he was to have held the title and he wants his son to represent Wales so that he can listen to the Welsh people and their needs can be brought to the heart of the establishment.
I really don't think there's any insult intended by the title still existing. .

Was this 'announced'?

Or just assumed?

SiannyMarne · 09/09/2022 20:26

Sorry no it doesn't honour the Welsh at all. It is a reminder that we are subservient to the English. Charles never represented the Welsh he never did anything for the Welsh and I don't believe his son will do anything for the Welsh'

Please do give a list of all the wondaful things Charles did I missed.

Bestcatmum · 09/09/2022 20:26

I shed a tear or two for sure. All the arrogance of youth had gone and he seems a really genuine and caring person. Especially mentioning both sons.

Charles has to give him the title.

It’ll be interesting to see if he does. On the one hand it would be odd for him not to carry out something his mother clearly wished, on the other hand there are already two historic royal Dukedoms that will stop being so in the next few years (Kent, Gloucester). Sussex will also not be royal after it passes on to Archie’s issue (assuming he has any).

I think it may also depend if Edward and Sophie want James to be Duke if Edinburgh in time.

Veeragall · 09/09/2022 20:28

@IcedPurple The Queen made a statement at the time. Obviously it is down to Charles to honour it as it is not now in the gift of the Queen to give.

That was when the English took the title not when it was created.

baguettechick · 09/09/2022 20:31

M and H were the only people he didn't mention by their titles (e.g. Duke and Duchess of Sussex).

I don't think they're going to have them much longer...

Just in the pub for dinner, everyone applauded and raised a toast to the King after his speech. It was very special.

I think that happened in a few pubs which is a great sign

when he brought up William he said William and Catherine.

He didn’t call them by their titles, just mentioned their new titles.

Stop! 😫😭

Witchofthedales · 09/09/2022 20:35

Very dignified under what will be extremely difficult circumstances, he has my respect, when my mum died I went to bed and sobbed for a week 😞 His heart will be breaking.

allinonenight · 09/09/2022 18:20

I sobbed at the my dearest mama being with Papa, that set me right off. I thought it was brilliant, and couldn't stop thinking how hard this must all be for him, if I lost my mum I would want to be hiding away with family, but onwards he must go

Yes and at the age of 73 when most of us would want to retire, not take on a new role

viques · 09/09/2022 20:37

I hope Edward gets the Duke of Edinburgh title which apparently is in Charles gift, if only because Sophie has redeemed herself from her earlier blunders over the years and Edward has taken over the Dof E award work I understand ( and it would reinforce the cold shouldering of York)

JudgeJ · 09/09/2022 20:37

Spanielsarepainless · 09/09/2022 19:49

I hope the King makes Edward Duke of Edinburgh as he has oversight of the Award scheme which was his father's brainchild.

So do I, it would be dishonouring his Father's wishes not to.

You know that Wales and England have had the same monarchy since 1286. That's over 700 years.

Wales existed as a united, independent country for just over 200 years- and even then there were bits that kept breaking away to form minor kingdoms. In fact, only one king ever ruled the entire of Wales before the Normans annexed the lot.

I hate this stirring of divisions between England and Wales. We are essentially the same peoples with a lot of the same cultural roots and DNA evidence demonstrates that the population of England was never a separate , invading group, especially in the borders.

Flockbee · 09/09/2022 20:39

Harry and Meghan don't want titles do they and they don't wish to be part of the royal firm, so it would make sense surely if they are removed at some point as per their wishes?

When Kate and William lived in Wales they shopped locally and made an effort to get to know and to intergeate with their local community. Despite its origins I think it's a brilliant title for them and that as they're more approachable and finger on the pulse as to what people want from a modern monarchy I think it'll be good.
