Prince Harry not attending Philips memorial

It has been confirmed that Prince Harry will not be attending P Philips memorial service. What are people’s thoughts about this? Is the whole security issue a smoke screen for the fact he can’t face his family?

I wondered the same if it's just an excuse. Sad that HMQ won't see the children. I've always wondered if Charles has secretly travelled to America to visit them

Christienne · 11/03/2022 22:30

He was there for the funeral. His attending would turn the event into a media circus. Can’t get remotely worked up about it.

AbbieLexie · 11/03/2022 22:31

Security is a smoke screen.

Wardrobes123 · 11/03/2022 22:36

Well given the Queen is no longer going, I think he probably is trying to avoid further fanfare from his presence alone.

I do hate how it’s become Harry is the bad one while William is a saint, when actually it appears that they are both flawed adults who don’t always make perfect choices. The vilification of Harry in the media is ridiculous IMO

Viviennemary · 11/03/2022 22:38

I think it's good he isn't coming. He has made his thoughts about how badly he has been treated and the failings of his royal relatives abundantly clear. I wonder if he will venture back for the jubilee.

Completely agree with this

Particularly given his “crimes” are spoken about it in the same tone and breath as Prince Andrew’s!
Fridgeorflight · 11/03/2022 22:50

Last time he was in the UK his car was chased by paparazzi. His mum died due to her car being chased by paparazzi. Security
sounds like a valid concern to me.

ldontWanna · 11/03/2022 22:51

This thread definitely shows that all the comments on the other threads saying "if he wouldn't come to x he'd get slated for it" weren't just speculation.

If he was coming we'd have the usual security, attention seeker, how dare he etc comments.

A lot of MN posters need to get a grip. He's not your childhood sweetheart. He didn't "leave" YOU. Get over it.

Cherrysherbet · 11/03/2022 22:54

I think he’s a grown adult who can make his own decisions.

He will have his reasons, and that is his business.

Blinkingbatshit · 11/03/2022 22:58

Meh, I think the world should have more to worry about than whether a work-shy, privileged numpty goes to his grandfather’s memorial - his choice, they want anonymity - please can we offer it (& they actually take it…and therein may lie the problem😂).

Obira · 11/03/2022 23:06

I’m quite happy he isn’t coming. His behaviour has been shocking, I’d be pleased if he never came back again.

ChicCroissant · 11/03/2022 23:20

It's not really a surprise that he's not coming back, he can't complain about the security arrangements and then turn up anyway - it completely defeats his case.

However, his earning power is almost entirely dependent on being seen as royal, so if he continues to skip the big events that's going to affect his income in the future. He's talked himself into a bit of a corner at the moment, particularly if the legal case about security doesn't go his way.

It's the Commonwealth Day celebration on March 14th that the Queen is not attending. Charlie is her "stand-in".
AdoptedBumpkin · 11/03/2022 23:44

Security probably is a smokescreen.

WinnieTheW0rm · 11/03/2022 23:53

I'm intensely relaxed about whether he ever comes again or not.

Juno22 · 12/03/2022 00:05

If he came and stayed with a member of his family such as his father or grandmother and accompanied them to the service he would automatically have security while with them. He should be ashamed that he's not attending. He could fly in the day before the service and fly out that night.

Where has it been said the Queen is not going to her husbands memorial?
CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/03/2022 00:35

Probably missing the point but how is the memorial service going to be different from the funeral? Surely you give thanks for someone's life at their funeral. Why the need for a separate service?

Or is a COVID thing.....

Could not agree more, @Wardrobes123.

And how easily the public is swayed by the Daily Fail & Sun, et al.

Rainbowqueeen · 12/03/2022 00:47

He lives in a different country now. There are always going to be key events he will miss. Just like anyone else who moves overseas.

He is luckier than most in that he can afford to go to visit frequently. But the timing may not work and he may have planned to go back to visit at another time.

Missing this memorial is definitely not something that he should be criticised for

Gilmorehill · 12/03/2022 00:53

The Queen isn’t going to the Commenwealth service not the memorial.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 12/03/2022 01:04

That’s not true!
It’s the Commonwealth service he’s not attending NOT his grandfather’s memorial service (so far as we know).
Please get your facts right ffs!

toomuchlaundry · 12/03/2022 01:05

@CurlyhairedAssassin I assume more people will attend this and some will have the opportunity to say something. I assume quite a few people will be having similar services (although not on such a large scale) due to funeral services having been so restricted due to COVID

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/03/2022 01:35

This.

He was at his grandfather's funeral. I mean has anyone on here attended a funeral and a memorial for a grandparent who died a timely, aged and peaceful death in another country? I wouldn't. And I lived in a different country to my grandad.
