I'm disappointed she settled. I'd imagine part of the deal would involve something about her no longer being able to discuss her allegations about him, moving forward. Just seems like another example of a woman being paid (by rich men) to shut her mouth.

Ah well - I hope that she at least, can find some piece without this all hanging over her anymore.

Wonder if PA will start making more public appearances now/join everyone else in June.

diddl · 15/02/2022 16:34

In some ways it doesn't see right to me that she hasn't proved her claims against him but he still pays out to her.

Well, will that all be nicely tied up in time to be present at the Jubilee celebrations??

NativityDreaming · 15/02/2022 16:41

It would be disgusting if he were to be any part of the jubilee celebrations.

Roussette · 15/02/2022 16:41

diddl put in a box, tied up with a nice purple bow enhanced with ermine, no doubt

Maybe both sides thought there was really very little evidence against him and the photo saga has undermined her credibility and rather than waste money on lawyers and drag each other through the courts it is better to donate money to charity to help others too.

thread from a lawyer on this process

Thanks myrtle that's interesting

Perhaps Fergie's already decided what she's wearing for the balcony appearance. They might be married by then.
DuncinToffee · 15/02/2022 16:53

From that thread

And, one by one, Guiffre's lawyers dismantled all the technicalities, leaving Andrew and his lawyers the decision to settle on Guiffre's terms - or face trial

And so Andrew has settled pretty much on the eve of trial

Settling on VG's term feels like a win for her to me.

diddl · 15/02/2022 16:56

I read that he is paying money to her charity-is that as well as money to her?

prh47bridge · 15/02/2022 16:59

That's the way a settlement works.

From her perspective, she gets a payout without having to go to court with the risk that the jury would decide she hadn't proved her claims, in which case she would have ended up with nothing.

From his perspective, he has to pay out some money that he wouldn't have had to pay if it had gone to court and he had won, but he's avoided the risk of the court giving her a much larger payout.

I broadly agree with David Allen Green about the way settlements work. However, I think he's missed the fact that some of the technical defences put forward by Andrew haven't actually been dismissed - the judge left them for the jury to decide.

Roussette · 15/02/2022 17:05

Surely also that more murky and damaging detail would not come out if he settled?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/02/2022 17:08

Is anyone really surprised?
I realise that paying out isn't an admission of guilt, but there's simply no way Andrew would ever have been allowed into a courtroom and left to his own devices in front of skilled lawyers

Amusing that he now claims to "regret" his association with Epstein though (yeah, right Hmm) and that he'll support victims' rights. I'd wonder if it'll be a quick visit to some charity, but he'd have to be allowed out for that and anyway I'm not sure they'd want him

Roussette · 15/02/2022 17:10

Forever and a day he will have the Maitlis interview following him around where he did not show a shred of sympathy for the victims. That is his legacy.

Agree with you both Roussette and Puzzledandpissedoff

Mydoghealsmyheart · 15/02/2022 17:29

So does VG receive the money or does it go to charity?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/02/2022 17:35

Precisely, Roussette (good to see you back by the way Wink)

As I've said so often, when the news moves on people don't remember all the legal nitty gritty; they just recall the headline points and that the subject was involves in something deeply unpleasant

Whether the RF will expect to troll him round again is anyone's guess - nothing would surprise me with that repulsive lot - but while a payout isn't an admission it isn't an exoneration either, and a public career may be a ghastly risk now

prh47bridge · 15/02/2022 17:36

@Mydoghealsmyheart

So does VG receive the money or does it go to charity?
The statement is not clear whether he is just giving to her charity or she is receiving some money as well.
StormzyinaTCup · 15/02/2022 17:52

If he has settled out of court and nothing has been proved either way where does that leave him with regard to his titles, patronages etc?

Being the sort he is with his huge sense of entitlement, I imagine he may well think he is owed these back now. I imagine that’s going to cause the Queen/PC a bit of a headache.

Malariahilaria · 15/02/2022 17:56

Another disappointed person over here. I would have loved to see him pontificating and patronising in court explaining exactly why he spent so much time with a convicted paedophile. Still, as pp have said the RF would never have let that happen. Much like when the queen suddenly remembered she'd actually remembered someone saying Paul burrell was allowed all that memorabilia. If he's going back on the Royal circuit I'm buying eggs.

Classicblunder · 15/02/2022 18:15

@Mydoghealsmyheart

So does VG receive the money or does it go to charity?
Genuine question: does she draw a salary from the charity for her work for it?

She doesn't seem to have ever had a "normal" job.

derxa · 15/02/2022 18:22

I'm glad it's over for the sake of the Queen. If that's tugging the forelock according to some on here I don't give a fuck.

Mamamia7962 · 15/02/2022 19:20

My immediate thought on hearing this was that it's because of the Queen's age and the fact it's her Jubilee year. Imagine if it had gone to court and the Queen had died. Everyone would have been blaming VG for not wanting to settle out of Court and the stress that it had put the Queen under.

Now the Royal Family can just concentrate on the jubilee celebrations.

Roussette · 15/02/2022 19:48

That's fine as long as they don't wheel PA out for dress up balcony time
