Prince Harry revealed in his Oprah interview that the Sussexes stopped receiving money from the royal family in the first quarter of 2020. However, newly published accounts reveal that Prince Charles continued to financially support the Sussexes until summer 2020.

I wonder if this is going to be a case of their truth or incorrect wording on Harry’s behalf. Interesting!

Well, on the bump-touching issue (since you bought it up Samcro) and the “every photo counts” philosophy that I think Meghan absolutely subscribes to, her arrival at Eugenie’s wedding is a good example of the “unnatural gesture that comes over nicely in a still photo” that she often did (coat-flicking and bump-clasping being amongst them).

At the wedding, the photos and film footage show that from the moment she started to exit the car, until she walked to the start of the awning to greet the clergy, Meghan had her left hand raised to delicately cup her jawline. It was only a walk of a few metres, but it is not a remotely natural gesture. But it does result in a lovely photo, where her face is nicely framed by her hand. As I said in an earlier post, she obviously knows what looks good on camera, and made sure she delivered it.

But, she was assigned people to teach her about Royal protocol, wasn’t she? It wasn’t just Meghan and Harry on their own. They had lots of staff. This is why I find it puzzling that she didn’t know about things like curtsying. Either the staff failed in their job to teach her or she failed to listen, but I don’t understand how she was so ill prepared. It’s never made sense to me.

She met the Queen before they were engaged I believe. I don’t think they had staff, though Harry did, j til they were engaged.

The curtsy shouldn’t have needed staff. That’s a very basic thing for Harry to have told her and he didn’t when he must have introduced people to the Queen before.

Samcro you should know that we're in a parallel universe of groundhog day with MM! We'll be talking papooses, avocados, roast chickens and nude tights in no time!

Roussette · 02/07/2021 16:53

We have some NDNs coming in for an early drink tonight.
I am going to delicately cup my jawline a few times and if they don't comment and tell me I look good, they can flippin' well leave our garden pronto!

Serenster · 02/07/2021 16:55

You totally should do, Roussette! I tried it myself in some photos once, and it is indeed very flattering - she knows her stuff. Grin

Roussette · 02/07/2021 16:57

I do know the put one leg in front the other and turn to the side thing that models do. When I've tried it for a family pic... my DCs say for god's sake ma, stop doing that stupid pose! 😂

Serenster · 02/07/2021 16:59

I hear you! I am old enough to have learned the “head forward, chin tilts down, eyes look up” pose from the OG Beverley Hills 90210 cast and my DCs also laugh at “Mum’s photo face”. They have started to adopt it themselves, mind… Grin

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 02/07/2021 17:00

Surely it’s basic good manners when in that position in the balcony not to keep turning around to chat with the person behind? She was literally turning her back in the public and the Queen! He obviously did tell her what she should be doing there.. and then became the sheep trotting meekly begins.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 02/07/2021 17:01

Behind

Roussette · 02/07/2021 17:02

Exactly! And I make mine stand on a stool if they want to take a photo of me!

(Disclaimer... photos of me are so few and far between, hate them!)

Roussette · 02/07/2021 17:05

Birds this was covered years ago on a thread. I think it was either Camilla or Princess Anne who carried on talking even when the National Anthem started. There's footage somewhere showing that. So MM turning round as it started is no biggy

StormzyinaTCup · 02/07/2021 17:08

Well what do you know, everyday is a school day for me on MN.

I have a family ‘do’ next week and, as I’m the least photogenic person to have walked the planet, I’m going to give ‘jaw cupping’ a go (once I’ve googled what the hell it is). I’ll report back as to whether there is a photo improvement or whether I looked a right tit Grin

Serenster · 02/07/2021 17:10

People chat amongst themselves and turn around on the BP balcony all the time, though. The Queen did once tell Prince William quite sternly to stand up, as he was kneeling down dealing with a rather young George. Maybe she wanted to make sure he was visible?

In this particular case, though, it was the fact that the national anthem was being played that meant Harry was telling her to face the front. Being American I would have assumed that would be second nature, given Americans are a lot more reverent towards the national anthem than we are.

JustLyra · 02/07/2021 17:10

I’m sure one of the royal reporters said depending on the noise in the crowd and in the room behind the balcony it can apparently be quite difficult sometimes to hear when the band first start if you’re not actively listening out for it.

Haha 😂 We need feedback!

Your lucky, my dd who is a photographer, kept telling me off for pulling that face. Its my face ffs , I can't change it lol
goldierocks · 02/07/2021 17:21

After the number of appearances Harry has made on the balcony over the years, he must know just how close the TV/press cameras are able to zoom. That particular appearance (where he told Meghan to "turn around") was her 2nd; she'd attended the Trouping of the Colour the previous year, shortly after their wedding. I definitely think that Harry should have explained protocol better to Meghan.

When the reports came out about Meghan's pregnancy shortly after Eugenie's wedding I can remember thinking they were very brave in sharing the news with family so early in the pregnancy (or even earlier, if the family were told before the wedding day). She couldn't have been any more than 10 weeks at the time, given the date of the wedding and Archie's birthday.

Roussette · 02/07/2021 17:32

Samcro haha 😂. They are cruel these kids!

ajandjjmum · 02/07/2021 17:57

@Samcro

I can't believe we have gone back to when they announced their first pregnancy. will we be back to bump touching as well? ffs it was ages ago. when ever they did it people would find a way to say it was bad.
Ermmm.....we're chatting on a chat forum. Why would you have a problem with that?
Roussette · 02/07/2021 20:33

Because it's been done to death again and again.

Allington · 02/07/2021 20:42

OK, shall we talk about Harry's apparent lack of self isolation following his travel from an Amber list country? What's the excuse there?

SueSaid · 02/07/2021 20:46

'Because it's been done to death again and again.'

So have many topics on mn. Just don't join in if you've been involved in them all previously.

I tend to give parking arguments a miss for this very reason.

'The way her coat was buttoned at the wedding certainly got everyone talking - and looking at the Australia photos, there was no need at that point to be wearing 'maternity' style clothes.'

Yep. Who wears a maternity style coat when 10 weeks pregnant 🙄

Roussette · 02/07/2021 20:48

🤣😂
Funny!

I dont tend to criticise what a pregnant woman wears but there you go...
Grin

SueSaid · 02/07/2021 21:04

'I dont tend to criticise what a pregnant woman wears but there you go..'

But it was so obviously to get folk speculating. A pp posted a pic afterwards from Australia when she of course wasn't showing. I mean why do it, a high profile event, someone else's high profile event why wear a matronly style coat if not to get tongues wagging. It's all so very typical 'look at us!' don't look at us! that we've seen over and over again.
