Play nicely and don’t say anything that will get your post (or the thread) deleted. I’ll start. Archie is cute and it would be lovely to see him more often.

Hehe they’re going to do really well and you lot are going to be SO CROSS grin

I hope they DO do well and become self supporting. It is unnatural for a couple approaching their 40s to have a lavish lifestyle paid for by a parent. Harry will get his self respect back and look more chirpy and they'll both be able to spend their time doing whatever it is they do. I hope interest in the them wanes in the UK as the media sniping is tedious. At the moment she comes over as artificial and narcissistic and as using her RF connections to fuel her ambitions. As a humanitarian, she has good intentions and I hope, once the pressure is off, she can settle to a handful of causes to make a difference. They would both need very thick skins (and nerves of steel) to come back to the UK in a royal capacity once FF was published - I don't see there being a queue of family members wanting to chat off the record tbh.

Oldbutstillgotit · 03/09/2020 08:16

@ Serenster excellent post .
At first glance the money being suggested is huge ( anything from $75million upwards) however H and M’s outgoings are also huge - mortgage and maintenance of their mansion , security , a lot of staff not to mention on- going legal battles .
I do wish them well but I dii I think they need to drop the Sussex titles.
As for the comment about working in Poundland ? Even their harshest critic wouldn’t think that is an option .

CousinDolores · 03/09/2020 08:21

as PP have said, I hope H&M take this opportunity to create a production team with plenty of opportunities for under-represented professionals - that would be way more valuable a contribution than whatever worthy programming they produce. But it's not like Netflix have parked a truck with $150m in it outside their house. It's just a media guesstimation plucked out of their air, to be allocated to production spend - yes, they'll make money if projects get made, but that's not their salary.

I don't envy them. I know the super-rich can find ways to hide earnings but H&M are stuck between constant public scrutiny over their income, and massive overheads of an LA private life. Their company accounts will be scrutinised with the malicious glee the DM reserves for Victoria Beckham's fashion house. Every freebie, every fee not donated to charity, noted. Prince Charles will probably have to support them for a while - which will keep the Royal Family's personal wealth in the UK media spotlight, something I imagine the RF won't want during a recession.

I'd like them to succeed - they seem well-intentioned and could do something practically good. It's all just so high-wire, all the time, though. Meghan might have developed a thick skin from acting, but Harry's not going to love Rotten Tomatoes.

I'd be far less irritated by them if they did well and quietened down and got on with it I think. It's the constant whinging and blame game I can't abide.
Seeitsortit · 03/09/2020 08:28

So did they get this gig by being linked or ranked?

Nishky · 03/09/2020 09:00

@Seeitsortit good question!

Viviennemary · 03/09/2020 09:17

Since they're only linked because they are ranked in the first place. I'd say Meghan does have a certain amount of appeal going of the tig blog she ran. But can't see what Harry has to offer if you strip away being royal.

What I think you are failing to realise is people want them to make a success so they are financially independent. It’s the being supported ultimately by the tax payer after effectively resigning from their job that is the main contention people have. Sort that out and there isn’t an issue. Certainly not an issue that needs capital letters for you to ensure everyone can read that you’ve got it wrong. Hmm
AKissAndASmile · 03/09/2020 11:39

Well they are about to be financially independent now so why are people still sniping?

SunbathingDragon · 03/09/2020 11:56

How do you know that? All I’ve seen is speculation about what they are being paid but no definite confirmation or combined with what their outgoings and costs are to enable them to be 100% financially independent. Please can you link to your sources that show they categorically are about to be?

Because they're not financially independent YET despite being late 30's? Time will tell......

They don’t have much success to manifest and certainly no achievements that rank them above other people. They are living off their titles (which he says he doesn’t want - call me Harry) snd then do precisely nothing of any value, other than make documentaries without any qualifications at all, other than their titles and a few ideas

Can I just point out that it all begins and ends with the public. If people didn't partake of these services (Kylie Jenner's lipsticks, Obamas' programmes) then Netflix wouldn't be worth 200 billion and be able to pay these kinds of sums to people who are selling caring, hope and empathy in a quasi-religious format to 'the masses'.

MissEliza · 03/09/2020 15:22

@BarleylemonPenguin you're absolutely right. Netflix won't be doing a deal if they think people won't watch. However H and M only got this opportunity because of who they are not what they've done so they really shouldn't be lecturing others about privilege.

CousinDolores · 03/09/2020 16:28

It's a neat twist: she gave up a career to marry him and throw herself into a line of work he was pretty good at; now the tables have been completely reversed. Fingers crossed for them that it works out better this way round.

I guess Netflix will have a couple of well-placed script advisors on hand for The Crown: Season Megxit. I wonder how that's going down at BP.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/09/2020 17:34

I really hope that M & H make a go of it.
Though will they be Meghan & Harry Sussex on the tv credits or Meghan & Harry Mountbatten-Windsor or even Meghan & Harry Markle?

Eaumyword · 03/09/2020 18:00

Oh I think credits will roll as The Duke and The Duchess of Sussex. In capitals no less.

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 03/09/2020 18:02

It didn't occur to me until you posted this, CousinDolores but it's a very real possibility that The Crown, already a money spinner, might be extended.

AfolMummy · 03/09/2020 18:09

I quite like them. The RF dynamics really really do remind me of an Asian family lol (speaking as an Asian, with the Matriach and family reputation being extremely important) and I'm so glad Harry & the 'daughter-in-law' managed to break free from family traditions and expectations 😆. Good for them.

Oldbutstillgotit · 03/09/2020 18:43

@ AfolMummy that’s fine so long as they financially support themselves and drop the titles that the terrible RF gave them.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 03/09/2020 18:47

Yes I agree. The only breaking free they seem to have done so far is from the work.

StartupRepair · 03/09/2020 21:53

I guess some of the money will go to pay people who actually have expertise in content making.
Wanting something to be inspirational does not make it so.

Viviennemary · 04/09/2020 13:51

Apparently the royal powers that be are going through the Netflix contract with a fine tooth comb to make sure Harry and Meghan are not trading on their royal status. Who could suggest such a thing. Hmm

JaJaDingDong · 04/09/2020 14:05

I wonder if the joint venture will actually be between TP and Oprah. Obviously M&H do not have a functioning Production company so there will be a partnership or service company making this content for them.

Isn't that nepotism? And if so, although not exactly illegal, wouldn't H&M have to be able to demonstrate that TP and OW are the only people who could provided the service their company needs?
