Play nicely and don’t say anything that will get your post (or the thread) deleted. I’ll start. Archie is cute and it would be lovely to see him more often.

I don't hate them, so no Smile but I know that was just a silly hyperbolic reference to people who are even just slightly critical of them so 🤷🏼‍♀️

YgritteSnow · 02/09/2020 22:20

And I genuinely don't see what's so "amazing" about two hugely privileged people neither of whom have never had to worry about money a day in their lives making multiple millions more for making "worthy" Netflix content.

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels

Another pondering I was having was how do we think William and Kate feel about how high profile H&M are possibly going to be if they become as successful as the Obamas? (I know this is a stretch but bear with me) do you think they will resent their global success, will they feel eclipsed by them?
If that happens we will find out. At best, I think it would be a situation where W&K (who will probably be king and queen) will be better known than them here and vice versa in the states.

If H&M genuinely want to rival the Obamas for success, they will have to do an awful lot of work for the next decade or so. The areas covered are very different so it’s not as if it would be a competition.

SunbathingDragon · 02/09/2020 22:43

@AKissAndASmile

All the haters will be watching the stuff they produce. Because they are obsessed with them!
I don’t have Netflix so I can’t watch but I’m not obsessed with them so maybe that’s why. 🤷🏻‍♀️
bigbradford · 02/09/2020 23:03

Unless I’m missing something, wasn’t Barack Obama The President of the USA. He made his own way in life and so did Michelle. Although being FLOTUS was via her marriage. She made it a job though and did it intelligently. M and H are not the Obamas. Harry gets what he wants by birth and privilege. The Obamas did not. If Meghan did anything other than be attached to her husband, and his status, I would have some respect. However she’s a minor tv actress.

I agree that they are using their privilege to make money and, as they are members of the RF, it feels obscene. All of this output is aimed at sentimental usa audiences. I think it will be the usual wordy drivel but they won’t actually get their sleeves rolled up. It’s preaching about their causes but not actually doing anything.

RubyViolet · 02/09/2020 23:09

Tyler Perry has an incredibly successful Production House. I wonder if the joint venture will actually be between TP and Oprah. Obviously M&H do not have a functioning Production company so there will be a partnership or service company making this content for them.

OVienna · 02/09/2020 23:09

@bigbradford they are 'manifesting' their success/achievements. Isn't that what Barak did? No? Thanks

OVienna · 02/09/2020 23:10

I have no idea what that 'Thanks' is.

RubyViolet · 02/09/2020 23:11

Sorry that should be creating this content in partnership with them.

AKissAndASmile · 02/09/2020 23:22

Even Meghans over the top hand gesturing drives me mad, never mind what they actually have to say.

Jesus Christ. Why so bitter?

bigbradford · 02/09/2020 23:37

She has no background in being a world leader, holding high office or doing anything other than acting and marrying someone to get status. She hasn’t earned the right to pontificate and neither has Harry.

They don’t have much success to manifest and certainly no achievements that rank them above other people. They are living off their titles (which he says he doesn’t want - call me Harry) snd then do precisely nothing of any value, other than make documentaries without any qualifications at all, other than their titles and a few ideas. I think it’s very shallow and sad. It’s also very American to think this is something they should do. Harry has ditched everything in the uk (more or less) for being in a few documentaries which are paying an already rich person, even more. The mind boggles. Is he giving it away?

Tezza1 · 02/09/2020 23:44

@StartupRepair

The last high profile person who was a producer while seemingly unqualified was Dodi Al Fayed. Seems like a plaything job for the super rich.
Do you think they will produce the equal of "Chariots of Fire?"
AKissAndASmile · 02/09/2020 23:51

Other Netflix multi year deals:

Shonda Rhimes $150 million
Ryan Murphy $300 million

They're going to be Hollywood producers so I bet media people will be trying to suck up to them now. Tables have turned.

A masterclass in thriving.

And to think people thought they'd have to start working in Poundland 😂

YgritteSnow · 02/09/2020 23:54

And to think people thought they'd have to start working in Poundland

Did anyone actually think that? Confused

bigbradford · 03/09/2020 00:26

I thought everyone was sucking up to them anyway. Hence the use of their titles! Status via birth is a great way to be a Producer! You don’t have to know anything you just need to be born into the right family. It’s still relying on little knowledge, marriage and the titles. Not talent.

Serenster · 03/09/2020 07:11

Just thinking about what they have told us they’re doing this year:

March: they want to “collectively make a change in the armed forces arena”
April: “our focus is on supporting efforts to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic”
Also April: going to launch Archewell, a charitable foundation to run emotional support groups, an educational empire and a well-bring website.
June: “over the past few weeks the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have turned their focus toward Black Lives Matter”
August: Meghan participated in events to support “When We Vote”
September: Okay, we are now content producers for Netflix.

It’s been quite a scattershot last 6 months, and the tangible outputs we’ve seen so far are a handful of appearances to distribute largesse. It will be interesting to see what happens next. I have no expertise in entertainment production, but it really does sound to me like a lot of the Netflix money will have to be spent hiring content creators who do actually have experience in this area.

cheezy · 03/09/2020 07:15

Hehe they’re going to do really well and you lot are going to be SO CROSS Grin

MissEliza · 03/09/2020 07:40

Regarding the Netflix deal, the proof of the pudding will be in the tasting. It may appeal to some people so they'll get their viewers and make some money. Personally, I'm sure it will be nauseating drivel unless they hand over control to someone who knows what they're doing. Most importantly for me is what names they will use on the credits.

OVienna · 03/09/2020 07:42

@Serenster Article in the Times says the production deal was always the goal. The other gigs were probably to give an idea of the interests/possible content.

Maybe Trevor Engleson (whatever his name was) will have a crumb dropped his way.

I actually think it is hysterical that they got what they wanted out of the big, thrusting Hollywood execs but not Queenie.

"It didn't have to be this way 😪."
"But, you see, it did, dear.'"

I'll be very interested to see how they are credited in the shows, if they go for the titles. Could they trademark "Harry and Meghan"?

Excellent posts yesterday, btw, S.

SunbathingDragon · 03/09/2020 07:44

Is she acting in the production then? I thought she had said she had no plans to return to acting. Where have you heard otherwise?

Of course nobody did. What a ridiculous and bizarre thing to have suggested. I mean, they live in the wrong country for a start! Grin
OVienna · 03/09/2020 07:46

I wonder, too, if "getting people to suck up to them" as a poster mentioned below, was part of the pathway to "doing something meaningful" that couldn't be achieved in the UK.
