Play nicely and don’t say anything that will get your post (or the thread) deleted. I’ll start. Archie is cute and it would be lovely to see him more often.

If they retain their titles , it’s hard to see how they could claim not to be trading on their royal connections.
If I remember correctly , Prince Edward was known as Edward Windsor during his time working in the theatre /TV industry. He didn’t have great success despite a lot of financial backing but I seem to recall he wasn’t allowed to use his title .

@Viviennemary

Apparently the royal powers that be are going through the Netflix contract with a fine tooth comb to make sure Harry and Meghan are not trading on their royal status. Who could suggest such a thing. Hmm
Does that mean they preempted the RF again by announcing something in the hope/expectation of ensuring they would agree?

There wouldn't be a Netflix contract if it wasn't for their Royal connections.

Having said that, I hope that HM lets them go ahead and achieve their financial independence - at least it won't be poor old Prince Charles keep having to bail them out.

The very idea! Smile

If this is the case, the Royals should stipulate no content on the Royal family, historical or present day. Let them make the inspirational content they are keen to produce without harking back to the family set up they have now left behind. See whether Netflix is happy to have all that off limits.

JaJaDingDong · 04/09/2020 15:43

Edward got into all kinds of difficulty when he had a production company, and had to give it up in the end and take on a "more royal" role.
Mind you, the main focus of his company was programmes about the royal family :).

Sophie also got into difficulty combining a PR job with being part of the royal family, but not being a working royal. In the end she gave that up too, and became a working royal.

H&M will find it difficult to explain how they jot the Netflix gig based on their own merits, rather than on their RF connection.

Oldbutstillgotit · 04/09/2020 16:04

According to the item I have just read , H and M did not tell HM about their Netflix deal even though it had been part of the Sandringham Agreement that any money making projects would be subject to scrutiny by BP.
I imagine the telephone lines between USA and U.K. are red hot.

Agreed. Sussex titles or not, Harry is still a prince and part of the RF (even if not working for them).

I just want them to make money, find a niche they do well in so they aren’t bouncing from one thing to another, so what I hear of them isn’t so exasperating.

Those last couple of sentences really made me laugh. What qualities, skills and experience has Harry got to explain how he landed this? He's never shown any interest in that world until now. At least Uncle Edward had shown a passion for theatre for several years before setting up his company.

Horse and stable door spring to mind. Why does the fine tooth comb only ever come out after the presentation of a fait accompli by these two?

I think it shows a public lack of respect to announce things to the world rather that discussing with those who should be involved and in agreement beforehand.
MissEliza · 04/09/2020 21:28

I think it would be really odd for MM to use her title in that context. Why wouldn't she use her own name when doing something in the entertainment field in which she was employed for several years. Actresses never use their married names. Sophie Winkleman doesn't call herself Lady Sophie Windsor at work. MM won't exactly striking a blow for feminism if she uses her dh's name at work.

Bumlooksbig · 04/09/2020 21:38

Finding Freedom has been heavily discounted on Amazon. It's sort of the literary equivalent to straight to video. And despite the best efforts of Sussex Squad, most of the reviews are not positive.

I think the Netflix earnings have been enormously inflated. No-one has signed a large cheque and driven it round to the mansion. The money will be drip fed over time. Netflix will tell THEM what to produce and if as a PP pointed out, things go over budget or take too long because of MM's micro management this won't be looked upon favourably. And if Netflix bosses don't like what they're pumping out the money will dry up. Somebody I was speaking today made the really good point that if they are contracted to Netflix for an extended period and bosses don't like the output, they can't then up sticks and go pitch to Disney or Spotify because they are under contract to Netflix. So if the output was really bad it could actually strangle them for the period of the contract because there would be no money coming in from Netflix but they would still have foot production costs and salaries for their staff themselves. Remember George Michael's battle with Sony? He didn't agree with their control of his creative output, he couldn't go anywhere else so his solution was not to sing another note.

Just sayin'.......

EdithWeston · 04/09/2020 21:45

Well she wouldn't, as she's Lady Frederick Windsor (same pattern as Princess Michael of Kent.

You're only Lady Firstname if you are born as aristocrat

ButteryPuffin · 04/09/2020 21:59

What's going to happen now to the mental health series Harry is supposed to be doing with Oprah for Apple? Ruled out by the Netflix deal?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 04/09/2020 22:01

Princess Theodora of Greece & Denmark is an actress & goes by the name Theodora Greece.
So I suppose H & M could use Sussex as their surname but not the HRH or Duke/Duchess.

MissEliza · 04/09/2020 22:07

@TracyBeakerSoYeah that would be a good solution.
@EdithWeston you're missing the point that she is forging her professional career without using the title she's entitled to use.

EdithWeston · 04/09/2020 22:16

I did not mean to leave the impression that she was Lady Frederick in any part of her working list fe

ButteryPuffin · 04/09/2020 22:33

I don't think anyone was under that impression, Edith.

stairway · 04/09/2020 22:38

I have to say I’m very much looking forward to seeing what their talent can produce. I’m expecting it to be entertaining whether intentional or not.

StartupRepair · 05/09/2020 01:46

Meghan has not shown much management skill so far based on the turnover and feedback for her staff at Buckingham palace. Harry led people presumably in the Army but does not have much exposure to commercial realities.

StartupRepair · 05/09/2020 01:46

Also what happened to the Apple deal with Oprah?

Sounds like it might have gone the way of many of their initiatives - highlighted in flashing lights until the next new thing comes along.

He was only a Captain, I think, when he left.

Given his history of using racist terms I’m not sure he’ll be that skilled at running a US based business

Viviennemary · 05/09/2020 09:18

I think the Queen will want to keep them reigned in as long as they are still known by their titles and Harry keeps his place in the succession. I can't see them lasting tbh
