Play nicely and don’t say anything that will get your post (or the thread) deleted. I’ll start. Archie is cute and it would be lovely to see him more often.

@Oldbutstillgotit

For a committed feminist, I have never quite understood why MM changed her name on marriage . Even if there was pressure / expectation whilst living in the UK surely that no longer exists ? As far as I am aware she did not change her name after her first marriage . ( happy to be corrected )
That was the only way for her to be able to use the Sussex title though because she is only able to use it because her husband became a duke. Otherwise introductions would Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and his wife, Meghan Markle. Personally, from a feminist point of view and as someone who also didn’t change their name when they married (not to a prince though!), that’s something I would have liked to see.

Cool person - thanks for the link, I am glad to know her.

If she had done this, I would have great respect for her too. Instead, she clutches onto her title acquired by marriage because it, instead of anything she has tangibly done or accomplished, is what opens doors to her.

trackydacks · 28/08/2020 11:35

As I understand it, one of the reasons the Queen would have made Harry Duke of Sussex on marriage is that Meghan is then addressed as the Duchess of Sussex.

Otherwise, they would be addressed formally as Prince Harry/Henry and Princess Henry of Wales or something similar. See Princess Michael of Kent for example.

Duchess of something being more palatable than Princess Husband's Name.

OVienna · 28/08/2020 12:15

I think there would have been a risk she'd have ended up Princess Meghan quickly too... "Duchess Meghan" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Viviennemary · 28/08/2020 12:17

Princess Henry of Wales. Great name for a feminist. Grin I wonder what her occupation will be listed as now. Can hardly be Princess of the United Kingdom since that job doesn't occupy her any more. And she's a bit young for retirement.

Yes, after all Diana was widely known as Princess Diana which wasn’t correct.

As well as Meghan keeping her name, is like to see Harry drop prince and duke altogether to become Mr Markle. Seems too far fetched that one! Grin

"Humanitarian"

Thinking about it - we could all put that on our CVs, no?

@MoggyP

Which version do you prefer - one from 2020s, or one from the 1940s?

As I've gotten older I've been able to understand that it's not mutually exclusive to be a feminist and be feminine. And to own that and harness your femininity and your identification as a woman in all of the different layers

You don't have to signal a social conscience by looking like a frump. Lace knickers won't hasten the holocaust, you can ban the bomb in a feather boa just as well as without, and a mild interest in the length of hemlines doesn't necessarily disqualify you from reading Das Kapital and agreeing with every word.

Or, this one?

" If women achieve equality by aspiring to and replicating the values that have been established by males…. Is it equality if the template has already been established by a formal dominator?”"

Was that Russell Brand? Grin

BottomOfMyPencilCase · 28/08/2020 17:02

I agree with him.

Yes, Russell Brand (2020). Very important point.

I've just seen them referred to as "Spencer and Heidi 2.0". I think it's my favourite comment about them ever Grin
Mine too!Grin
MissEliza · 28/08/2020 23:21

Who are Spencer and Heidi?

JaJaDingDong · 29/08/2020 07:30

I had to look them up
www.insider.com/heidi-montag-spencer-pratt-relationship-timeline-2019-1?amp

I saw an article in The Guardian (I think) this week comparing them to John and Yoko.

MissEliza · 29/08/2020 10:15

Aah thanks @JaJaDingDong

canteenofcutlery · 29/08/2020 11:30

Omid reckons they are coming back to the UK for an " extended stay" next summer.

BottomOfMyPencilCase · 29/08/2020 11:36

There's something distasteful about Omid announcing their plans and movements. I wonder if the RF were told their plans in advance or if it's an attempt to pre-empt any RF objections about them attending Trooping the Colour, etc.
Maybe they could do a Life Stories type interview with Piers Morgan whilst here. That would get them lots of publicity. Wink

Viviennemary · 29/08/2020 11:53

They've tried that before. Doria staying for Christmas. It didn't work. It just didn't happen. It would be better if they didn't come. The negative publicity and attention they generate is not good for the Royals or the country.

MissEliza · 29/08/2020 11:54

@BottomOfMyPencilCase I've just seen Omid's latest declaration on my online news feed and 'distasteful' is exactly what I was thinking. I agree it may be an attempt to get in there first so the RF can't object to being at ToC. However surely this is the half in half out model rejected by HMQ?

Gonegrey31 · 29/08/2020 12:24

Won’t Meghan have to return before next summer for the court case she has instigated?

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 29/08/2020 14:17

How about it's more like we might be coming back to discuss coming back as things haven't gone to plan?

WinnieTheW0rm · 29/08/2020 14:23

When is her case due to be tried?

SunbathingDragon · 29/08/2020 14:26

I agree. It feels like they are trying to force the half in, half out that they wanted.

Next summer is a long way away. Considering the damage to their reputations that they have made in the four months since they have left the RF, I’d be amazed if they are welcomed at any formal event unless it is the sort of thing that even Andrew is accepted at (eg a funeral etc).
