Hope you don't mind Dave.

So H&M wrote to the tabloids and singled out the main culprits.

The full letter can be found on the BBC website

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52349573

I suspect that H&M had been advised to send a letter to the rags for when the judge asks if they have taken any steps against the rags - which they could not do while they were under RF rules.

Is this what we are supposed to be “happy for them” about now? Their futile stand against the U.K. tabloid press?

Why do you think it’s a good move and a source of joy?

Are you happy because they have withdrawn cooperation from the tabloids? Or because they’ve made a point of announcing it?

Samcro · 20/04/2020 14:52

hello I do hope this one doesn't get derailed. there is already a nasty thread about Harry people who hate can post on.
was just thinking how I missed these threads.

Toilenstripes · 20/04/2020 14:54

I’m glad they won’t cooperate with the tabloids in the future. Those papers have waged an unfair and untruthful campaign against them from the beginning.

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 14:59

I’m just trying to establish the rules of these threads @Samcro

Can we just be happy for them generally (I am, especially for Harry who wanted a family so long and now has it, and wanted to escape and -geographically at least - has). Or do we have to be happy about every single thing they do?

Does being happy for them involve cheering their mistakes (mainly PR related) as well as their triumphs?

Just trying to get it clear because I don’t see constructive comment on their PR problems as incompatible with being generally “happy for them”, but it seems like maybe some posters do?

Mummy195 · 20/04/2020 15:04

Of course it's good news to stand up against your bullies.

I don't get your point. What PR mistakes?

OP posts:
ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 15:12

I think most of their mistakes have been PR mistakes. There have been quite a few over the past two years. It’s what is making their path so rocky.

It’s not as though they’ve committed any evil acts, is it? They don’t eat kittens or kick children. All their bad press is because of PR. Even controversial stuff like their finances would not have seen the light of day with better PR.

When I had insomnia a couple of nights ago I watched a series currently on ITV player about different Royal family highs and lows over the past 70 odd years. They got quite a fair treatment in that, I thought, with some tit bits about how their comms got off to an awkward start with Harry’s unprecedented “Meghan is my girlfriend. Stop bullying her.” statement , and how that reflects his grief for his mother and consequent desire to protect Meghan.

WinnieTheW0rm · 20/04/2020 15:14

Well the overnight statement was completely tone deaf, wasn't it?

They stepped back on 1 April, and it was very, very clear that they hadn't been cooperating with the British media for months in the run up. So the need for the letter really isn't clear. And it wasn't terribly well drafted, (rather rambling), so whatever they intended, it did not read well. And is nearly 3 weeks late even if needed at all.

It's a pity they sent it. They have a lovely opportunity to just go to ground, live quietly, do the behind-the-scenes legwork for whatever it is they are setting up, all at a time when nothing else is really happening.

Nanasueathome · 20/04/2020 15:18

Is it the Queen’s birthday today?
Not very good timing for H&M to issue that statement

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 15:18

Well the overnight statement was completely tone deaf, wasn't it?

It did seem a bit like poking the bear. I think Harry is very much being led by his feelings. If he could step back and rise above it, their lives would be easier.

I worry that his MH issues, grief, conviction that the press killed his mum and obsession with protecting Meghan prevent him from following subtler media strategies (which must have been suggested to him many times, especially while he was still under the place system), and he’s accidentally making it all worse.

Maybe now they’ve made their stand against the tabloids, they will take a back seat for a few months and settle down to family life while the pandemic is ongoing.

Nanasueathome · 20/04/2020 15:22

Sorry, Queen’s birthday is tomorrow.......

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 15:25

The ITV series really is well worth a watch, by the way.

It covers a lot of ground from Prince Philip getting engaged to (then) Princess Elizabeth, a lot about Diana and Charles, the authorised documentary about the RF in the 60s, the Annus Horribilis including the Windsor Castle fire, a bit about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.....can’t remember it all. I think the general theme is “highs and lows”.

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 15:27

Oh and Princess Margaret too.

eddiemairswife · 20/04/2020 15:32

Apart from moving to a desert island there is not much they can do to avoid the tabloids; I suppose they could switch to reading the more serious papers, that is, if they read the papers themselves. I suspect that it is someone on their staff who tells them what the press have said.

theyoniwayisnorthwards · 20/04/2020 15:32

A good friend of mine briefly knew Meghan Markle through work years ago and said she was lovely and very much a ‘woman’s woman’ who supported other actresses. I’m not sure that letter was the smartest move but they seem like good people and new parents who are trying to protect their son. I hope it works out for them

Samcro · 20/04/2020 16:06

it was nice that PP did a message.

ArriettyJones · 20/04/2020 16:08

Yes, I have a soft spot for PP.

Samcro · 20/04/2020 16:14

i did have a moment when I couldn't remember his name.

FATEdestiny · 20/04/2020 16:16

I really don't understand The Sussexes media strategy. I like both Harry And Megan as people - but blimey they are making it hard to like them.

They wanted to retire from public life. I expected to hear literally nothing from them. So why the visibility and public statement? It makes absolutely no sence to me, and I'm 'on their side'

Samcro · 20/04/2020 16:18

I thought they wanted to retire from royal life. unless they become hermits they will always be out there. but I did think the leaving was to cut ties with the rf and playing second fiddle to W&K.

lboogy · 20/04/2020 16:20

I don't understand the letter either. I can only think that they were caught walking their dogs in LA and also caught handing out food to the homeless. I saw reports of them supposedly staging the photos. Maybe the letter was designed to let people know they wouldn't stage their own photos?

Who knows. But it seemed ill timed

lboogy · 20/04/2020 16:23

@ArriettyJones yes I agree: some of their mistakes have been PR ones. Talking about climate change, keeping the baby's Christening under wraps, not doing the beauty parade outside the hospital, not handling her dad - she should have sent a team to neutralise him. He seemed lost in the wind.

All that said, they have been the subject of some vicious reporting. Frankly I don't blame them for leaving. But going to LA... I just don't get it. Appreciate it's her home etc but it's not the place to get a quiet life.

Mummy195 · 20/04/2020 16:26

Everyone would have thought, 1 April that is it, the tabloids are done with them, but that was not case now was it.

This is perfectly good timing, their legal case is this week. No one complained about timing when the press let out a slew of vitriolic articles about them during the pandemic, and no one complained when this was done to a highly pregnant woman and later new mum. Yet H&M are expected to wait till the pandemic is over before saying anything - so that they can then be called attention seeking.

Also note that the letter was not a press release to be read out to the public, it was to newspaper editors, so that everyone is clear not to quote stories from the DM group.

This article puts it well
www.newstatesman.com/2020/04/harry-and-meghan-markle-sussex-decision-tabloid-tone-deaf-long-overdue-coronavirus

"But since Friday, the Mirror has published eight pieces about the couple, the Sun has published six, and the Daily Express has published a remarkable 50 – this without counting the tens of articles where Harry and Meghan were mentioned in the context of other royals, but not in the headline. "

I don't know who the hell is advising them at the moment, but they perhaps ought to think about a change of team.

Samcro · 20/04/2020 16:47

she should have sent a team to neutralise him i have been watching to much criminal minds.....had visions of her hiring a team of hit men.
