A thread for those who wish to discuss what's in the news and what your take on it is.

I still can’t get over ‘work hard’ (given the context). I mean, really.

As for “reach for the stars”? As opposed to what, the gutter? They were homeless sex workers FFS.

I think the idea of messages on the bananas was a great one actually, but the execution ... 🤦🏼‍♀️

Chocpear · 27/01/2020 20:42

Regarding signing the bananas, won’t the charity have come up with the idea? How easy is it for the Royal to say no, they don’t want to do that?

Chocpear · 27/01/2020 20:44

I stand corrected, apparently was MM’s idea, having seen something similar done in the US.

Chocpear · 27/01/2020 20:45

Forgot link - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-47092171

Butterymuffin · 27/01/2020 20:46

There's some totally batshit stuff on Twitter about Meghan. I found some once when clicking on more general Harry and Meghan content and saw really weird, obviously hostile hashtags - clicking on those brought up total madness, of the Archie is a doll, Meghan is a sleeper agent in the pay of a foreign government, she and her mother have both done jail time etc. Made anything on here look extremely tame. There are some really disturbed people out there.

Froq · 27/01/2020 20:51

The more bizarre the more coverage I guess.

And we all know what Meg is like when there’s a sniff of media attention.

That fake bump and doll stuff was outrageous. People were ADAMANT.

Even after Archie was born and she was clearly postpartum it still carried on.

"That's a different baby".
"Why's she carrying a doll around?"

WTAF?

ilovejeffgoldblum · 27/01/2020 20:55

What's that about froq? Eyes aren't what they used to be and iPhone do small! ...😜

ilovejeffgoldblum · 27/01/2020 20:56

So so small , sorry 😀

ilovejeffgoldblum · 27/01/2020 20:59

Encyclo what's the fake bump and doll about? I haven't seen that! Sounds really weird , conspiracy theory those stuff. Surely no one would believe it?

Froq · 27/01/2020 21:00

jeff it’s a gif of Meg eagerly running. I think if you tap on it, it goes a tad bigger. Only a tad though so might still be too small.

LaMarschallin · 27/01/2020 21:01

I started following these threads because I am extremely cynical about Meghan Markle and her motives.

But I've dropped out of posting more and more because of reactions like this:

I still can’t get over ‘work hard’ (given the context). I mean, really.

As for “reach for the stars”? As opposed to what, the gutter? They were homeless sex workers FFS.

I think the idea of messages on the bananas was a great one actually, but the execution ...

Surely people shouldn't just accept every link as gospel?

The picture of bananas that have been written on came from this link:

www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/496381190176106053/

Those bananas were nothing to do with her at all. And the picture didn't even look like it came from the event MM was at.

Now, imo, she picked up on that idea and used it.
Do I think that's cutsie and inappropriate and also too "American" (for want of a better word) for my taste?

Oh God, yes.

She pinched an idea that she thought would appeal to the public and it went badly wrong.

Do I think she was thinking about how caring she'd look?

I'm afraid I do.

Did she write "Work hard" etc on those bananas in the link?

No. Those were written by a kindly school cafeteria worker.

ilovejeffgoldblum · 27/01/2020 21:03

@Froq 😃

annielouise · 27/01/2020 21:04

Has anyone come up with a suggestion why MM pushed her coat back to show her bump quite a few times?

I've just read those banana messages in full for the first time. Spread love!

annielouise · 27/01/2020 21:08

Just saw maybe MM didn't write that one.

annielouise · 27/01/2020 21:12

PC and PW seem to have both mentioned gran/g.gran Princess Alice helping save a Jewish family. I think they should have kept quiet and let others mention it. To me it's like blowing your own trumpet. Right now it just feels it smacks of aren't we lovely and aren't you lucky to have us after the scandals.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 21:19

Has anyone come up with a suggestion why MM pushed her coat back to show her bump quite a few times?

Is this the coat flicking thing again? I'm still it sure what there is to explain.

Jeff, the accusations of a fake bump, different babes and a doll were discussed here on MN (plus many other places obvs). Total Batshittery.

rockingchaircandle · 27/01/2020 21:23

The batshit stuff on Twitter is so crazy. And horrible. The doll one is very weird, very baby in the bed pan.

But it's so obviously untrue, it won't be believed by anyone apart from for die-hard conspiracy theorists.

Which is why the stories in the press and some of the 'speculation' on here is more pernicious. They are credible enough, they stay within the believable and build on each other. Slyer, with all the 'a source close to the couple/palace', being in the mainstream media, yet plausible enough to catch on, and mutate online.

And, much harder to defend yourself again.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 21:25

Someone on a previous thread had some YouTube videos of coat flicking she felt we should watch.

annielouise · 27/01/2020 21:29

Yes, the coat flicking was weird. I don't see what it could be but attention seeking.

I don't know anyone can come out with the theory she wasn't pregnant. Very stupid people.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 21:31

I don't know how she can be accused of attention seeking. Since she got engaged she's only person in room people are looking at.

Butterymuffin · 27/01/2020 21:44

Jeff it was a similar rumour to the one about Beyonce where people were saying that the bump was a fake bump, she wasn't really pregnant and a surrogate was having the baby instead. Or that it wasn't even a real baby and was a doll instead. Even the separate bits of the tin foil hat conspiracy don't really fit together. As I said, it's a whole other level on from here.

LaMarschallin · 27/01/2020 21:44

Encyclo

Someone on a previous thread had some YouTube videos of coat flicking she felt we should watch.

Don't know where that is but I did see it.

And, tbh, one part in which she "flicked", then applauded something, stopped, "flicked" again and then carried on applauding did look a little like: "My bump. See it?".

And my cynicism about her - as mentioned above - was certainly added to by the above and below the bump, double-arm cradling which looked, to me, a bit odd and uncomfortable.
I've never seen it in real life.

And I may find I'm being manipulated by the press.
And maybe it's just natural behaviour for an actress.

Since she got engaged she's only person in room people are looking at.

That may not be the most robust defence of her motives in marrying prince Harry.

LaMarschallin · 27/01/2020 21:49

www.cosmopolitan.com/uk/reports/a25569836/meghan-markle-cradling-baby-bump/

This was the "above and below" thing I meant.
Although Cosmopolitan seemed to approve.

Roussette · 27/01/2020 21:49

Totally utterly disagree on the nonsense coat flicking thing. Good grief, we've all got mannerisms, things we do involuntarily. I fiddle with one part of my hair, is that attention seeking? Maybe she was nervous. If I am I probably have got lots of odd things I do.
It was such a quick move of her coat, I doubt anyone would notice... unless you really are finding something to pick on.

Even though I don't agree with a lot said on that, there are times I can sort of see it despite not agreeing. This, really really not. I just find it weird and looking for something to criticise because there isn't anything else
