A thread for those who wish to discuss what's in the news and what your take on it is.

This is an interview given by Thomas Markle's first wife:

DandyAndFine · 27/01/2020 15:29

“Dandy for that you shall be class I mean thread monitor! (On second thoughts, that's a poison chalice grin)”

Roussette Oh isn’t it just Grin

PerfPower · 27/01/2020 15:30

There's no disagreement from me Encyclo about TM's behaviour (or Samantha's) - I just think that all the Markle apples fell very close to the Markle tree. The whole family are only interested in number one so I don't see how criticising TM helps MM because she appears to have inherited his character. IMHO obvs.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 15:33

The difference (to me) Perf is that TM has helpfully proved all the evidence of his character himself.

The MM evidence of her character is coming from Piers Morgan, the DM and the Express.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 15:34

Whoops Perl apologies for typo

rockingchaircandle · 27/01/2020 15:45

I think this is important. In the Guardian Opinion piece I posted, the journalist discussed "storytellers" which was an interesting way of thinking about it. TM bypassed the storytellers this morning and threatened his daughter on the TV so his actions were clear. I do blame the TV show as well.

ThreeRandomWords · 27/01/2020 15:49

Plenty of evidence of MM's character from her own words and her own behaviour and her own interviews. Obviously, people interpret things differently.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 27/01/2020 15:51

That's a pretty damning excerpt from Meghan's Tig blog upthread.

yolofish · 27/01/2020 15:52

If this was the plot of a soap opera, no one would believe it.

I think ALL of them have behaved pretty shoddily TBH and I still feel sorry for HMQ, Charles and William who have been left to pick up the pieces. (Whether you care about monarchy or not, they are the ones who have to get on with it for the time being).

That's not entirely true Encyclo. Many of us formed our opinion of MM from seeing her express her thoughts and opinions in interviews, watching her give speeches, and reading the stuff she has written, not from the sources you quote. Those just confirm what we have been able to see and judge for ourselves.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 16:04

Those are the main sources I've seen cited here Imaginary, which is why I've come to that conclusion.

rockingchaircandle · 27/01/2020 16:12

Little girls dream of being princesses. I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power. And grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy. Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate.

How is this damning? Genuinely confused!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 27/01/2020 16:14

I'm viewing with a healthy dose of scepticism anything I read in the papers, tabloids or otherwise Encyclo. I don't watch Piers Morgan so haven't been treated to much of his take on matters.

I think we have to accept that most of what is said on these threads is just conjecture and opinion, on both sides.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 27/01/2020 16:20

rocking because she claimed she knew nothing of prince Harry before she met him on a blind date, or the RF.

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 16:24

“Because I’m from the States, you don’t grow up with the same understanding of the royal family. And so while I now understand very clearly there’s a global interest there, I didn’t know much about him.”

Those were her actual words

DeTwamps · 27/01/2020 16:27

If any of you fancy watching a bunfight involving Piers Morgan, I've just come across this interview.

I have to say, that I am with Piers Morgan on this one.

Ayesha - the lady in the punch up got what we call a lot of 'dirty digs' in to Piers for those who don't like him.

The comedy duo that were mentioned earlier (editors of DM and Mirror) are sat there chuckling away to themselves throughout.

Let me know whose side you're on in this spat!

DeTwamps · 27/01/2020 16:31

It's a tough one though. A hard thing to disprove actually is that something isn't racially motivated. The lady Ayesha, couldn't mention a single racist slur, but claimed that the negative press was 'racially motivated'. How the everliving God, does one prove that ones negative comments about someone of colour are not racially motivated?

DeTwamps · 27/01/2020 16:34

For e.g. if I say Eddie Murphy is a stupid dumb actor who is only capable of one type of role - how can I prove, that the colour of his skin has absolutely no bearing on my dislike of him? (For the record, I actually find him hilarious, but he was the first black actor that came to mind).

DeTwamps · 27/01/2020 16:35

And if anyone can link to what the comedy duo had to say for themselves, I'd love to see that. The video cuts off when he asks for their input.

PerfPower · 27/01/2020 16:40

I don't watch Piers Morgan or read the DM or Express. I'm slightly insulted that you would think I need a journalist to form my opinions for me. When Harry said 'The family she never had' I felt sorry for her - then it transpires she was a very loved and indulged child. So, to me, this demonstrated that she had given PH a bit of a sob story that she had no family, which was a lie. She was also far too interested in our royal family for her claim that she didn't know much about Harry. I just don't believe that the 'Markle nose' was the only thing she inherited from TM.

DeTwamps · 27/01/2020 16:43

What do you read PerfPower? MN?

PerfPower · 27/01/2020 16:49

I'm a voracious reader and will read pretty much anything - but I mainly read The Times and BBC (online) for news. MN for the FWR board normally, I don't know why this thread caught my eye.

rockingchaircandle · 27/01/2020 16:52

“Because I’m from the States, you don’t grow up with the same understanding of the royal family. And so while I now understand very clearly there’s a global interest there, I didn’t know much about him.”

Is this what you mean @SunsetBoulevard3?
I don't get how it's damning?

"Little girls dream of being princesses. I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power. And grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy. Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate."

Encyclo · 27/01/2020 16:57

Actually the very fact that she referred to Kate as "Princess Kate" demonstrates how little she actually did know about the RF.
