Hi mumsnetters. I’ve been to view this gorgeous cat today. Pending a home check, I’ve reserved him and will be bringing him home next week! I’m in love.

So sad to hear that. He had the best of times with you.

Ellmau · 19/07/2024 00:07

Oh, I'm so sorry.

But you gave him the best months of his life.

Nsky62 · 19/07/2024 00:54

How awful , you gave a cat a loving, happy home, very hard to say goodbye tho.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/07/2024 01:41

So sorry to hear that. What a wonderful life you gave him. He was gorgeous.

sashh · 19/07/2024 03:53

So sorry to hear that, I loved seeing Rodney blossom as he bonded with you. You gave him a loving home for the time he had left and that's a wonderful thing.

FuckingFreezing · 19/07/2024 06:21

I loved this thread and I loved Rodney. I'm so sad to hear this horrible news but thank you for giving Rodney so much warmth. You are a wonderful person and I'm sure he loved you ❤️

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/07/2024 07:02

Very sorry to see this update OP. Rodney was gorgeous and clearly a character and I'm sure he appreciated that you gave him over a year of living a very comfortable life.
💐

Vinorosso74 · 19/07/2024 07:25

I'm so sorry. He was clearly well loved by you and had a happy life. So sad😥

StarsAtElbowsAndFoot · 19/07/2024 07:40

Thanks for your condolences everyone. I’ve had a dreadful night’s sleep and for once I can’t blame the little 12 week old who only sleeps glued to me! My mind just kept drifting back to my poor boy and how frightened he was in that room yesterday. Racked with guilt but keep trying to tell myself I did the kindest thing for him and the lovely vet will have been kind to him as he slipped away. What a little character he was 💔💔

So sorry to read your update. RIP Rodders.

If I was someone who believed in woo I might think that Rodders came into your life when you needed support and a cat to stroke , and that he stayed with you until he thought you could cope with the world again and he could see that there were other humans in your life to sustain you.

But that would be nonsense, wouldn’t it?

He was a lovely lad, and you will have so many memories of him to remember.

Fraa · 19/07/2024 17:54

It was the kindest thing OP, you did the right thing by him.

He was a lovely cat, I enjoyed hearing about him, I was sorry to hear your news.

Pudmyboy · 19/07/2024 17:56

So sorry to hear about Rodney, you plainly adored him and let him be his best self with you. All the lovely pictures you posted of him cuddling up to you showed how he had taken to you too.
It's the most awful pain when the time comes to say goodbye, even though you know it's the best thing to do, but he would not have got better and if he had neurological problems he may have ended up losing bowel and bladder control which he would have hated.
Please be kind to yourself and remember the love you had for him and the snuggles you had together 💐

HerodAntipasti · 19/07/2024 19:12

So sorry for your loss. He was a sweetheart. X

JaneJeffer · 19/07/2024 19:14

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 19/07/2024 19:30

So sorry, OP Flowers You gave Rodney the best 'autumn days' that any cat could have wished for, and you also made him into a Mumsnet legend,

Noseyoldcow · 19/07/2024 20:26

Oh no! I am so sorry for you. But you do know he will live forever in your heart, don't you?

QueenBitch666 · 19/07/2024 23:10

Rodney is adorable ❤️

Davros · 19/07/2024 23:22

ScottBakula · 20/07/2024 15:33

Oh @StarsAtElbowsAndFoot I am so sorry to hear about this , it must of been very hard for you and your DH to have to say goodbye to him .
But you know it was the right thing to do.

You gave him so much love and allowed him to come out of his shell and be loved.
your overlord will always be in your memories and when your DC gets a older you can show him this thread so that he can lean what its like to own and love a cat

soddingkitten · 20/07/2024 18:07

What sad news @StarsAtElbowsAndFoot Rodney was lucky to find you and a welcoming home for the last phase of his life. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that he was loved and cherished to the end. Take care. X

user1471548941 · 21/07/2024 17:59

So sad to read this- I posted on the thread in the early days welcoming Rodney from my own big chunky (and weird!) rescue, Flynn.

We have since gained a brother for Flynn, an older boy with health problems and Rodney’s story reminds me of some words from my very wise DH. When considering whether to take our new boy home, I asked DH “but what if he breaks our hearts?” And my DH replied “the only thing sadder would be him staying in the rescue and not knowing our love in his old age”.

You reached out and gave Rodney the love he needed and he you, you must be heartbroken but you ensured his life was filled with love. Rescue’s know, they know a hard life and then they absolutely know when they are loved.

CatChant · 21/07/2024 20:10

I am so sorry about your lovely Rodney. Don’t feel guilty. You gave him love, warmth and security, and an escape from suffering when he needed it.

When we have to make that decision out of the blue I think we all wonder whether it was the right one because it comes as such a shock. With time you’ll know you did the best you could for him.

Be kind to yourself.
