Just had to leave my cat at the vets

My poor cat has been a bit off colour for a few days , last night seemed to be having problems peeing so I made a appointment and took him to the vets.
The poor mite has a very full bladder the vet tried to massage his bladder and relive it but it didn't work so he has to be anesthetized and a catheter fitted .

They also need to run some blood test take sure his liver and kidneys are ok .

worried

Oh dear. Not the update I was hoping for. Hopefully the next plan will go better.

Nidan2Sandan · 10/01/2022 19:48

I had a cat with these issues, turned out to be kidney failure and we lost him after 2 weeks of trying everything. He was 7 years old Sad apparently it's quite frequent in boy cats.

My other cat has been in the vets this week. He's had a mini stroke and gone blind with rational detachment due to high blood pressure. He's 15 so not unexpected but blimey these furries really do cause us so much worry dont they.

Hopefully the vets can work magic on your boy.

Nidan2Sandan · 10/01/2022 19:49

Retinal not rational

lucertola28 · 10/01/2022 20:52

Your poor little cat, I hope the steroids work for him and if they go ahead with surgery I hope it is successful. Crossing fingers and paws for you.

NewYearCalavicci · 10/01/2022 22:08

@Nidan2Sandan
Oh so sorry about your furries, my vets has run a few test and his liver and kidneys seem ok but I guess there could be more underlying problems though as they still have no idea what's causing the issue.

In the past I've always been really lucky and had healthy pets that have needed very little vet treatments.
Cats and dogs living in into their mid teens at least

My 7 year old rescue DCat Zelda is now at the vets as they try to get urine from her small bladder 😢 she has blood in her urine occasionally usually when stressed but they want to check for other causes before deciding on treatment. She's only been with us a month after leaving a family where she was stressed out by their 3 year old

NewYearCalavicci · 12/01/2022 19:53

@sunshinesupermum
Our cats could be mistaken for each other , I did not know he had a doppelganger.

He is still at the vets , they have rang me 2x per day every day to let me know how he is getting on , its not good . He is not responding to any of the meds he is on , they took his catheter out yesterday and though he is peeing a bit it is very small amounts.
He is now also on steroids to see if that helps but the track record for them is not that good .
He is very stressed and growls whenever anyone comes hear him now , which is unheard of from him , he is also still not eating so has lost weight.
I am going to bring him home tomorrow to see if been at home helps to relax him and see if he can pee better .
If not I will take him back for his op but they are very wary as although it has worked with some cats the track record is by no means great and if it fails he will have to be PTS quickly .

Am I doing the right thing or should i end his misery now ?

Oh im so sorry to read your update, have been checking daily to see how your gorgeous boy is.

What is your instinct with the surgery? You need to go with what you feel is right for your boy.

💐

Moonbabysmum · 12/01/2022 20:41

If there is a chance the surgery could work, if give it a go. Otherwise you'd always wonder. Worst case scenario has the same outcome, albiet with the stress of going through surgery (they are very good at dealing with post operative pain though), but best case scenario he lives for many more years.

Wishing you and kitty all the best

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 12/01/2022 20:43

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to read your latest update OP Flowers

If it was me I would do whatever I could do save my cat - I don't know if that's morally wrong or right, but I know I couldn't forgive myself if I had him PTS knowing I hadn't tried everything.

Having said that, it's entirely your decision and nobody would blame you if you would rather he went peacefully now. It's so horrible to see our pets in pain :(

SunshineCake1 · 12/01/2022 20:45

Oh no. What a horrible position to be in.

With my cat she had cancer. We had the option of having the cancer removed but if it went wrong we would have her for a week. In the end we decided to not have her treated and she lived another nine months, dying a couple of months before her 19th birthday. My only regret was having her put to sleep a day too late really.

We changed our minds over and over and as she wasn't suffering with the cancer, and she was already on meds for a couple of issues, we decided the risk was too great and made our decision.

If it were me I think I would bring him home to see if he settles a bit at home but I'd expect it to take at least a couple of days for him to calm.

GettingItOutThere · 12/01/2022 21:47

OP im so sorry if you have - but have they x-rayed him?

how old is he?

Sweetpea1532 · 12/01/2022 21:48

Oh, @NewYearCalavicci
He's gorgeous...I'm so sorry things aren't turning around for him.
Only you can make the decision about PTS..you will make the right one for him, whatever that may be...he does seem to be struggling so, with not much quality of life now. Hopefully when you bring him home, his stress will be relieved so he can get on with his healing.Flowers

sunshinesupermum · 12/01/2022 23:20

So sorry OP. I would take a chance with the operation. We bought Zelda home and they still didn't get any urine. Needless to say she has just a huge wee on my curtain. Her bloods are ok so it is very likely her problems are stress related but she has to go back next week and be sedated to get the urine for confirmation that it isn't more serious. Meanwhile she sends get well purrs xxx

sunshinesupermum · 12/01/2022 23:23

PS he is such a handsome fellow. They break our hearts don't they?

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2022 04:26

I think I would ask the vets just to get on with the surgery asap. And then at least you know that you tried absolutely everything. He's gorgeous.

Extratoebeans · 13/01/2022 16:31

@Newyearcalavicci How is your boy doing today? Did you get him home to see if that helps? Hope you are both OK 💐

SunshineCake1 · 13/01/2022 18:56

I hope you've had better news today.

NewYearCalavicci · 13/01/2022 20:32

Thank you all for your message's it means a lot to me to know people are thinking about him .
I have brought him home , he has got shaved bits all over him where they keep on having to inject him and he is scruffy looking and he has lost weight but he has wilted down some meat and bics, shouted at the local cats ( through the window ) and us now curled up next to me which is rare .

He hasn't had a pre yet but he hasn't tried , it's more worrying when he tries and can't.

I am going to keep him at home until tomorrow or Saturday depending on if / when he has a pee

OP posts:
NewYearCalavicci · 13/01/2022 20:34

He wolfed down food not wilted Confused

Extratoebeans · 13/01/2022 21:06

Thats so good to hear, I hope he manages to pee without difficulty. Is he going back on Saturday for the surgery? Enjoy your rare cuddles

Sweetpea1532 · 13/01/2022 21:12

@NewYearCalavicci

Awww, that's so good to hear that you and kitty are cuddled up and he's eating and shouting at the locals 😹
Here we are all over the world pulling for the little guy to pee...a big hurrah will go up when we hear the good newsXmas Smile

NewYearCalavicci · 13/01/2022 21:54

@Extratoebeans ,
If he manages to pee ok then he will stay on the steroids for a bit longer or even indefinitely if that's what it takes I'd rather he was on the steroids than have surgery because of surgery could go wrong.

@Sweetpea1532
Its a very odd, but nice feeling to know someone on the other side of the world is waiting for him to pee, if there is some spooky power of collective MNers then now is the time to show it Grin

I promise i will me to you all posted Smile
