My poor cat has been a bit off colour for a few days , last night seemed to be having problems peeing so I made a appointment and took him to the vets.
The poor mite has a very full bladder the vet tried to massage his bladder and relive it but it didn't work so he has to be anesthetized and a catheter fitted .

They also need to run some blood test take sure his liver and kidneys are ok .

worried

Oh no @NewYearCalavicci :( I'm so sorry to hear this. Paws in for your little man Flowers

lucertola28 · 17/01/2022 18:14

Poor kitty, hope he will improve and the vet can do something to help.

Paws crossed, I know how it feels worrying about them

sunshinesupermum · 17/01/2022 19:02

Oh so sorry 😥 Zelda was on an anti inflammatory prescribed by the vet. Will start her on Cisteze capsules which break open and can be distributed among her food tomorrow. The food the vet recommended is Hills CD Prescription diet. We have dry food but it comes in pouches too. Thinking of you xxx

sunshinesupermum · 17/01/2022 19:04

Thank you Sweetpea1532

Mia184 · 17/01/2022 19:53

Fingers and paws are crossed for the poor kitty!

NewYearCalavicci · 17/01/2022 21:58

Well on the way to the vet's he had a pee in a carrier and then he was been examinied he had another pee so the vet said take hom back home and keep a eye him .
I've been told to keep an eye on him again overnight and tomorrow and if necessary but all tje going back and forth no isn't doing him or me a lot of good.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 17/01/2022 22:09

At least he's peed again Smile

I think one of the problems is that all the stress from the vets (and being carried back and forth like you say) really doesn't help the situation.

They need to be stress free to pee properly but when they don't pee, we take them to the vets which makes them more stressed and the cycle continues...

Paws crossed for your boy Thanks

NewYearCalavicci · 17/01/2022 22:29

@fairylightsandwaxmelts
I agree , one of the meds that he's on work as a sedative so that should relaxing enough but it doesn't seem to be having the right kind of affect I guess we just have to keep on trying for now

Stickytreacle · 17/01/2022 23:05

One of my cats is prone to this, his is definitely triggered by stress, so limiting vets visit to essential only is a good idea, mine was sent home from the vets as he was too stressed to be hospitalised.
Weeing is definitely tiny amounts after an attack, I think it takes a while to get over the soreness and inflammation but as long as there is some pee it's good. My lad often sleeps and seems unwell afterwards too, probably due to the drugs and it takes its toll on them, his coat often goes staring and poor looking.
For meds I find a buster pill popper is indispensable and much less stressful.
I hope he is better soon!

Extratoebeans · 17/01/2022 23:24

Ah im glad he was able to wee again and the vet was happy for him to go home.

Hopefully he just needs rest, but that doesn't help when you have to keep taking him back and forth if he hasn't been for a certain amount of time.

They cause so much worry dont they! 💐

We had a cat who needed the operation to stop this problem reoccurring. It was a complete success and he had no more issues for the remaining 12 years of his life. I’d really recommend trying it before PTS.

NewYearCalavicci · 20/01/2022 05:07

@Stickytreacle
Your scenario sounds very much like mine .. have you found away of stopping your cat from getting stressed?

@GodspeedJune
I am glad it worked for your cat its good to hear success stories they are reassuring and I will definitely give it a go before having him put to sleep

Posted to soon
He is still peeing ok ( sort of )only small amounts and frequently , about once every 2 hrs but he is not having to revisit his tray straight away very offen so I will keep him at home for now.
His meds will run out at weekend so I will need to get more , i am not sure if the vrt woll want to see him again before prescribing more

I'm so glad he's still peeing!

Our vet is happy to prescribe over the phone if they've seen the animal within a certain time frame so it's definitely worth asking Smile

For stress, have you looked at cystease tablets (combined with the Feliway plug in)? D-mannose tablets are also excellent for bladder health.

They're both supplements so fine to be taken long-term and alongside traditional painkillers with no ill-effects.

Extratoebeans · 23/01/2022 16:37

@Newyearcalavicci hows he getting on?

NewYearCalavicci · 26/01/2022 12:59

Hi All , sorry about the lack of updates ,
He is doing ok but not great.
He is still managing to pee but only small amounts and while he is not revisiting his tray as much as he was at the start of all this he is still going back far more often than I think he should.
I am waiting for the vet to call me back to see if they think longer on the meds will help or we need to move onto the next stage .

On a good point he seems to be getting back to his noisy normal self , meowing for 10 mins almost solid when I come in from work and charging round the house at 3am shouting at anything that moves outside , a tin can was the offending item on sunday night !

I should of added he is now on food for his bladder and I have bought a couple of supplements to mix in with his food .
I need to find somewhere to be able to get his food easier though , Tesco's didn't have any so sent normal whiskers instead .
I ordered from Amazon and despite my delivery day been Saturday and the option to leave it in my safe place they took it away and redelivered the following week on a Thursday . Angry
Fortunately my neighbour saw them and took it in for me

Ahh your poor chap. Good to hear he's peeing. Wish he was peeing a lot more.

Dodie66 · 26/01/2022 13:49

I ordered mine from Fetch which had now been taken over and it this site www.paws.com/. Delivery 2-3 days or you can get next day delivery. I used to buy in bulk. Both my cats had kidney problems

Kenwouldmixitup · 26/01/2022 14:41

OK. I’m now invested in DC’s recovery.

Mia184 · 26/01/2022 14:51

Has the pH level of his pee been tested?

Ceara · 26/01/2022 15:08

In case positive stories are helpful, my cat had recurring bouts of idiopathic cystitis aged 5-7. He was a frequent flyer at the vets for suspected blockage. They always concluded it was a functional blockage due to muscle spasm. His flare ups used to resolve with time and painkillers. Peeing clearly hurt him during flare ups, poor boy, and he would hold it in or do lots of little pees, often away from the litter trays (I think he blamed them for his discomfort).

Touch wood, he hasn't had a flare up for over 8 years and that time has included adjusting to a baby, and more recently a puppy.

We moved him onto a wet-only veterinary diet for urinary care, and also encouraged him to drink as much as possible - tuna flavoured water was helpful. We think it was stress related and his stress was mainly due to conflict with other neighbourhood cats. He was a rescue stray and a bruiser in his day and we think the cystitis coincided with hitting middle age and finding himself challenged more often by other moggies (he was also a frequent flyer at the vets with fight injuries on his head and neck) and the cystitis settled as he's settled into ageing more gracefully, ranging less far and chilling out by the fire more.

Extratoebeans · 26/01/2022 17:19

I'm glad he is back to himself with his shouting at 3am 🤣

Fingers crossed his improvement continues. Let us know what the vet says.

NewYearCalavicci · 26/01/2022 21:15

@Dodie66 , I forgot all about Fetch , I have used them in the past for food for my polecats , thanks for the reminder and their name change .
@Ceara, my cat has very similar symptoms to yours , though cystitis has been rule out , it does seem to be nerve / muscle spasm's . He also frequently pees in the wrong place .
However he is a house cat ( because he is a thug ) but only just 2,5 yrs old so its not a age thing with him .

I spoke to the vet early today and they recommended keeping him on the steroids for 2 weeks and the muscle relaxer for a month and see how he gets on .
