So do I or don't I?

Yesterday I took my friend to pick a kitten from my brothers house.
I fell in love with one of the kittens who was absolutely adorable.
I sent my husband photos and he said 'if you want one get one but I won't be involved' (we all know that would last about five minutes 😂)
After playing with them all for about an hour we pack up friends kitten and head home.
Now I'm thinking I should have brought the one home that I liked. Especially given that it's the only one that isn't spoken for.
We have an older dog who is soft as anything and would wander round the garden with our guinea pigs when we had them with no prey drive at all. She would ignore my mums old cat when we visited. She was more interested in the poop. Which leads me to another con on the list.
My heart says yes but my head says no. We had no plans to get a cat but we can afford one. My kids would love it, but it's, potentially, a 15 year plus commitment.
There are probably more cons than pros!
Realistically I know that it's care would fall to me as the dogs does.
I have no idea how much keeping a cat costs. I'd get insurance because we all know cats can get themselves into sticky situations!
If it makes a difference I did animal care at college and I've worked in rescue and boarding previously.

If you were me what would you do?

I love her little quizzical face when she looks at you🥰
See seems to be thinking "what did I do?"

Dd has just called me into the kitchen where the boiler has leaked all over the work top. When I've opened the cupboard door there's a pipe detached from the boiler. Then ds pipes up 'oh yeah, the cat was trying to climb in there before so I pulled her out' 🙄
Luckily after a quick WhatsApp with the installer I managed to fix it!
Little horror.

Well, it is Halloween, after all...and its her first one...she felt the need to make a big splash Halloween Grin

She had to do at least one trick so you'll know to give her lots of dreamies for a treat so she won't come up with another trick.Halloween Wink

I love torties. I had a tortie who got me through a house move, an alcoholic step mum and a tough time at secondary.

Cassie is beautiful. Enjoy her and love her lots.

Help! After her escapade into the boiler she's been trying to do it most days. I know I need to put a base on the cupboard but until then is there anything I can use/smear on the pipes in the meantime?

Tinfoil ? You could wrap it loosely , scrunch a bit so its bumpy

Cats apparemtly don't like the feel of it

Or say "No" that always works with cats ........... Ha Ha NOT Grin

FinishWhatWeStarted · 31/10/2021 23:46

She's obviously a tiny little genius because she never does this when I'm around. Only my youngest has seen her or it thus far and he's 6 so can't help much!

Do you have a footstool you could put on the worktop work a few encyclopaedias on top if required so she can’t climb up there.

Elieza · 03/11/2021 22:21

With a few encyclopaedias.

Uh oh. Poor thing. It's not very fun for them.

Chemenger · 10/11/2021 16:35

Buy good quality earplugs now. My last foster went into season before her spay appointment, five nights of howling and carrying on. Never have I been so glad to see the back of a foster cat! No fun at all for her.

Oh god don't! She's already vocal! Weirdly her sister who lives over the street seems to be coming into season too whilst her other sister and mum who live 40 miles away are yet to start! All being kept inside until they are spayed.

Can't quite work out when to get this done though.

She's tried helping him with his emails but for some reason he doesn't appreciate the extra letters in them! And his close work colleagues often see her as she jams her butt in his face on zoom calls 😂

Zara had one season before I got her spayed. I didn't think it would happen so soon because she was so tiny, but it did. She screamed the house down. My poor neutered male that I had at the time looked confused, then stood over her and made a few half-hearted gestures in the right direction with his lack of equipment, which seemed to enrage her more, like she was screaming IS THAT IT?!? Admittedly I laughed.

My friend across the way with the sister to Cass messaged me in a panic the other night because she thought she had caught her older, neutered male cat mating the kitten. Then she thought they might just be sat close together! Grin

Hi all. Thought I'd post an update on Cass. She's now five months old. Fully vaccinated and booked in to be spayed in January.
She's still very cuddly with me and Dh but has a crazy half hour just before we go up to bed! She's playing with the dog more and using the tree as camouflage that she leaps out of as the dog passes. She's not been in the tree yet but likes batting the baubles about. Her favourite toy is the plastic cover off the radiator valve Grin
She's grown loads and I said to Dh last night 'oh she's not a kitten anymore. Can we get another' (jokingly) and he (mr. I don't like cats) says 'let her have a litter and we will see about keeping one' Shock
Now obviously there's a little piece of me tempted by the thought but the world is already full of unwanted cats and kittens and I don't want to add to the problem. Plus she's not been out yet and I have no plans to let her out until she's spayed.
I say that but I had a knock at the door a couple of weeks back. I opened it to my neighbour from across the road looking worried. When I asked what was up he pointed at the planted by my front door and the cat appears from round it and runs inside.
Turns out she's sneaked behind me into dd1's bedroom and pushed her way out of the window. Another neighbour saw it happen. Apparently she tried to back up but the blinds got in the way and she slide off the window ledge, landed on the bay window tiles and rolled off onto the grass.
I pulled and pressed at her, spoke to my vet and monitored her closely but obviously she wasn't bothered at all except for not liking water on her paws which she tried to shake off Shock
Then a week later her sister (who lives across the road) did the exact same thing.
They both sit at the window yowling to go out.
Tonight Cass was sat crying at the back door and it was only when I picked her up and carried her round the garden that I realised she could hear next doors kids and thought it was one of ours! Dh is out now so she's laid by the front door letting us all know he's abandoned us forever!

So do I or don't I?

I can absolutely relate to your worries. I got my cat spayed when she moved in with me. She was already 5 years old but her previous owners didn‘t bother to get her spayed.

I worried the entire time she was at the vet and then for the first 24 hours as well. She was absolutely fine.

BTW my cat didn‘t get a „cone of shame“ and also didn‘t have to put on a suit and she was fine with that.

We've always had older rescue pets who have been spayed. Daftest part is I worked in animal rescue for years from being 16 so I've supported animals through it before and seen the op done on a handful of occasions! But she's my baby 🙈 I'm hoping she doesn't mess with her stitches so fingers crossed she's like yours. Thanks for the reply x
