So do I or don't I?

Yesterday I took my friend to pick a kitten from my brothers house.
I fell in love with one of the kittens who was absolutely adorable.
I sent my husband photos and he said 'if you want one get one but I won't be involved' (we all know that would last about five minutes 😂)
After playing with them all for about an hour we pack up friends kitten and head home.
Now I'm thinking I should have brought the one home that I liked. Especially given that it's the only one that isn't spoken for.
We have an older dog who is soft as anything and would wander round the garden with our guinea pigs when we had them with no prey drive at all. She would ignore my mums old cat when we visited. She was more interested in the poop. Which leads me to another con on the list.
My heart says yes but my head says no. We had no plans to get a cat but we can afford one. My kids would love it, but it's, potentially, a 15 year plus commitment.
There are probably more cons than pros!
Realistically I know that it's care would fall to me as the dogs does.
I have no idea how much keeping a cat costs. I'd get insurance because we all know cats can get themselves into sticky situations!
If it makes a difference I did animal care at college and I've worked in rescue and boarding previously.

If you were me what would you do?

All men know when their partner talks about getting a pet has already been decided that they are having that pet.

It will keep the dog company when your out.

Elieza · 25/09/2021 11:47

Get the kitten. It will cost about the same as a dog once fully grown. If you can afford that it will be fine.

Let her play with her sister. You will love her.

You have to post pics. It’s the law.

FinishWhatWeStarted · 25/09/2021 12:52

Ok....I've sent the message. Meet Cassie. No plans for when we will get her yet but within the next seven days. (They aren't close by)

So do I or don't I?

She’s a tortie! You’re in for some fun! Beautiful.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/09/2021 13:08

She’s a brindle tortie. She’s a beauty.

Elieza · 25/09/2021 14:52

Good plan OP. She’s gorgeous. I’m sure you’ll all fall in love with her.

ColonelNobbyNobbs · 25/09/2021 14:58

Get ready for some tortitude 😂 i have a tortie and white, she’s brilliant (and mad)

So do I or don't I?
ColonelNobbyNobbs · 25/09/2021 15:15

Accidentally posted my other black and white fella. He’s also mad 😂

Elieza · 25/09/2021 15:44

Post his pic anyway @ColonelNobbyNobbs

Can never have too many cat pics!! 🐈‍⬛

Elieza · 25/09/2021 15:44

Your torture is so cute. 😀

Elieza · 25/09/2021 15:44

Tortie ha ha!

Chunkymenrock · 25/09/2021 15:48

It'll be a kitten for 5 minutes. Unless you actively wanted a cat, I wouldn't take it on. So much commitment and responsibility. The dead mice/birds, the aggro when you go on holiday, the weeing inside, the walking all over worktops, the fleas...

TheABC · 25/09/2021 15:49

Tortie cats are amazing and picturesque.

You will quickly understand the phrase "Dogs have masters, cats have staff."

Flufferty · 25/09/2021 16:48

I've had two torties. She's beautiful 😻

I was never a fan of cats, always a dog person. Then I volunteered through a work initiative and fostered kittens, they were pretty cute. Third time fostering and it was a single kitten, we fell in love and we adopted her. I'm now a cat convert. We adore our dog and cat their interactions are hilarious. Enjoy your new kitten!

Dh picked her up whilst I was at work, I've just got home. She's not happy at with the dog at all 😅 she's growling and puffed up like a bottle brush! The poor dog doesn't know what she's done wrong 🤣
She's been super calm so hopefully the next few days will bring a friendship or truce at least!
She's made her home on dhs shoulder 🙂

Think I'm going to put her on four meals a day as she's on three and is tiny.

She might not have seen a dog before, she’ll soon establish her dominance.

Elieza · 26/09/2021 22:24

Aww, wee soul scared of the dog! I’m sure she’ll soon realise the dogs a friend and they can snuggle up together.

NinDS · 26/09/2021 22:26

Introduce the dog slowly…are you giving her some space to go where the dog can’t?? She needs that, or she will feel threatened at this stage.
She’s beautiful.
My tortoise shell cat (or calico as you may hear them referred to) is 20! She’s still a dominant feisty one but I love her to bits!!!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/09/2021 22:26

She'll soon let the dog know who is boss. Grin

She definitely hasn't. She has a two metre rule! She will sit and observe the dog until she gets bit too close! The dog is amazing and stays out of orbit 😅

Yes. The dog has been kept separate at times and we've got the crate she travels in for the kitten to go to. She's fed in there and has a bed. The dog isn't allowed anywhere that's not the floor so the cat has plenty of spots she can go too. She's currently asleep under the couch.
