It hurts so much because we love them. They being great joy and enrich our lives but the flip side of that is the pain when we lose them.

TheSilveryPussycat · 23/11/2020 21:53

I expect Walter is missing him too, is he?

You did the right thing.🐾🐾

coastergirl · 23/11/2020 22:00

Thank you all. I keep thinking I've seen him. Dark shadows look very much like black cats. I hate that there are two food bowls, two cat dens. It's all wrong.

The bonus of Walter not being very bright is that he doesn't seem to have noticed. He was the same when Bert went missing. He's not happy that I won't let him out though. Too risky.

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/11/2020 22:01

Yes you do get visits, none of my childhood cats did but the last one was heard for a good 9 months afterwards and I’d find little white feathers in odd places. One was stuck quill end down into his grave.

I’m sorry @Justonedayatatime11, you care for those cats so well and it’s so unfair she’s so poorly.

TheLongRider · 23/11/2020 22:18

I don't have a faith but my Catholic mother would sometimes light a candle and include St. Francis of Assisi in her prayers when one of our cats died. He's the patron saint of animals. Mum also felt the presence of various of her cats long after they'd gone.

Papergirl1968 · 23/11/2020 22:22

Hope you get some sleep tonight, Coaster. I don’t suppose you got any last night.
Also hope your child/children (I know you have at least one) are ok. So hard for little ones to take in.

coastergirl · 23/11/2020 22:30

I'd love to think he was still here in some way. Something randomly fell off a shelf earlier.

My boys are ok, thank you for asking. Five year old is probably going to be diagnosed with autism soon. He's very black and white about things. It doesn't directly affect him and in his words "but Walter is ok" so he's alright. Little one is only 17 months and loves the cats but Bertie rarely went near him so he won't notice. It's me that's an absolute mess.

coastergirl · 23/11/2020 22:32

Walter is now very cross! Sitting yowling by the back door. But he has a litter tray, food, water etc. He doesn't need to go out and isn't doing!

Supersimkin2 · 23/11/2020 22:56

Well, it's a blessing the DC are too small to understand. Try and get some kip in.

coastergirl · 23/11/2020 23:03

I have a Walter on my lap and I'm watching I'm a celeb with wine. I don't usually like it, but for some reason I prefer it in Wales?!

When you described Bertie's life coastergirl, all I could think was how lucky he was that he found you. Those efforts you made to find him ensured that he was safe and loved right up until the end. That is the best thing that we can hope for.

I prefer I'm a celeb in Wales too. Hope you get some sleep tonight and be proud of what you did for Bertie.

coastergirl · 24/11/2020 00:37

@nettie434 thank you ❤️

coastergirl · 24/11/2020 00:39

I might print out this section of the thread to show me how much Bertie was loved.

swampytiggaa · 24/11/2020 04:21

@nettie434 has just said exactly what I didn’t have the words for 💕 imagine if you hadn’t taken him and loved him? And searched for him 💕

I’m so glad he had you even if the time was too short 💕

Papergirl1968 · 24/11/2020 10:17

How are you doing today, Coaster?
I’m glad your older DS handled it ok.

Allergictoironing · 24/11/2020 11:36

Morning Coaster. Sorry I haven't posted before now on how sorry I am to hear about Bertie, I had sudden visions of what I would do if that happened to one of mine & got so upset I couldn't read the thread for a bit Sad.

You did your very best, and though his life was short you made it the best for him.

swampytiggaa · 24/11/2020 12:12

How are you today @coastergirl? Every time I went in the pet food aisle this morning at work I thought of Bertie 💕 and you 💕

coastergirl · 24/11/2020 13:25

I just...I don't know. I can't believe it. I feel sick and just want to go back in time and make sure he was in. It's heartbreaking. Thank you all for thinking of me.

@Allergictoironing I don't blame you. I would have been the same way.

Papergirl1968 · 24/11/2020 14:16

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but there is no way you could have known that would happen.
Don’t blame yourself, blame the idiot that accidentally or deliberately left the antifreeze where Bertie could get it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/11/2020 14:57

If I hadn’t let Bertie out that night he’d still be here. If Dh had been able to get him in when he’d seen him skulking around cars he’d still be here.

We live and learn with these things, no cat of mine will ever be allowed out of the garden again. I will catproof and if I have to put a new fence in so be it.

Supersimkin2 · 24/11/2020 18:00

You're right @Fluffycloudland77 but having fun was the name of asbo's and Bertie's game. They loved a bit of a stroll doing neighbourhood watch.

Some cats would be fine inside - eg Mr C, lazy bastard - but some wouldn't have been.

That really matters - life contains risk, whether we like it or not, and they were enjoying themselves, which is more than most people can say about their time being up.

coastergirl · 24/11/2020 19:28

I've just collected these from the vets. 💔

Trying to keep Walter in because I'm terrified of it happening again, but he can be fast when the door opens.

Oh coastergirl that is both lovely and heartbreaking SadThanks

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/11/2020 19:48

That’s a nice thing to do, you can get a paw print memento off those. I have a paw print necklace. It gave me a lot of comfort in the early weeks.

coastergirl · 24/11/2020 20:53

Lovely and heartbreaking is exactly right. It set me off again.

Fluffy i hadn't thought of that. Thank you. I'm going to do the same. I'm also going to get one of those box frames and frame the paw prints and vials of fur along with some photos of him ❤️
