My pup was castrated yesterday due to a lost testicle - we were advised this was sensible as it could cause cancer in later life if not removed. I collected him from the vets at 2pm and he has been vomiting ever since - all through the night, all day today. He can't even keep water down. He is clearly disorientated and occasionally gets up and tries to run somewhere before falling over.
I am so worried and upset. I've called the vets and am taking him at 3:30 but sat here and just wanted some support really before i go.

Oh no! Poor little man :( I've had animals who reacted like this to the sedative. They were all okay in the end. I think it's just a bit much for their little bodies. You're doing the right thing to take him back in - they can check for infection and give him an anti-emetic. Chin up

Thank you Blithereens - he is my first dog so i am worried sick. Good to know that yours have been ok in the end. He was shaking when i collected him, he seems so poorly. Do you think they'll put him on a drip? he hasn't had a wee since yesterday morning either and hasn't even kept water down Sad

I would expect them to put him on a drip right away as he sounds very dehydrated. Make sure you tell them about the lack of water in and out. Unfortunately that does mean you may have to leave him there for a couple of days :( But he will be in the absolute best place. I hope he gets better quickly - I'm crossing my fingers for you both!

In my experience animals often try to 'run away' from feeling poorly, which is why they do that wobbly falling over thing! It's horrible and scary but not terribly uncommon after surgery.

That makes sense. He is clearly in a lot of pain too as his breathing is like sighing - he has 3 incisions as they kept trying to locate the missing testicle, one of them is 4" long... I never thought i could love an animal so much. I'm going to try and get him in the car, thanks all for kind words, i appreciate it.

The poor thing :( Really hope he's ok and it's just a rare reaction to the sedative etc. My boy had same procedure last year and was cut right up his tummy as missing testicle was as high up as was possible :( Hope he is feeling better, you are right to get it checked out x ??

Hello all, just back and vet said he's just suffering with the anesthetic. He gave him an injection of penicillin and something else (can't remember what he said it was now). PHEW! so relieved, i was beside myself.

Update: little namechange is still very poorly and is being sick regularly. We are going back to the vets at 4pm ;-( he can't keep ANYTHING down, not even water....

I was just coming on to see how he was getting on. I hope they keep him in this time, just so you don't have to keep trekking him back and forth! Poor little man.

So, the vet said that he was just having a bad reaction to the drugs and that he's 'making a meal of it' WHAT?! and that he thinks he's ok - he mocked me for my concern if i'm honest, saying 'no dog would kill themselves through dehydration' which i find hard to believe - if he's ill and can't keep any food/fluids in at all, surely that's a possibility? Anyway, i got him back in the car and he threw up all over it AGAIN.... ;-(
I'll see how we get on this evening.

I would get him to a different vets ASAP for a second opinion if he is not keeping any fluids down.
Dogs do die from dehydration. One of mine almost died through a virus that caused him to not eat or drink for 10 days and they deteriorate very fast with vomiting.
It probably is a reaction from either the NSAIDs or sedation but regardless he needs treating for the vomiting surely?

That many incisions in a cryptorchid is not that unusual however they are usually more painful and require more pain relief than a standard castration.

I hope he feels better soon and if he was mine I would be seeing a different vet!

Greyhorses he is my first dog so i am a bit useless although from the first time i took him to this vets for his injections i didn't like them - another instance where i look back and realise i should always trust my instincts!
I will be getting a second opinion tomorrow - My MIL (who has 5 dogs) just called and said the same thing. He hasn't given him any pain relief and his attitude was as if he was just being pathetic (needless to say that's not particularly helpful ;-(

He is just lying at my feet with his lampshade thing on. If i move rooms i have to scoop him up and carry him with me. He had a wee earlier as i carried him outside. His nose is very dry. He has sick caked around his mouth - he wont let me clean him, just turns his face.... if i put water on my fingers he will occasionally lick it off but he wont drink from a bowl. Can you get anti sickness drugs for dogs? i would've thought he could've had that plus painkillers but nothing today....

You can get anti sickness and pain killers and I dont know why your boy hasnt been given them.

He sounds quite poorly really, would you be able to google another vet and ring the emergency number for advice?

Would he chew an ice cube do you think?

My friend is talking to her friend who is a vet to see what she thinks... He's just eaten some chicken (he is very hungry) so i'll see how long that stays down, typically whatever he eats he throws up within an hour or so...

Vets do out of hours services. Please do ring the out of hours - hopefully it will be a different vet than the one you saw before.
Dogs do die from dehydration. I cannot believe your vet suggested they didn't! He may well need intravenous fluids if he can't keep anything down.
He sounds a poorly pup, much more than you would expect from a surgery.
You can indeed get anti sickness drugs for dogs.
Please do then register at a different vets and make a complaint to the ones who didnt help your pup or give you reassurance before.
