My pup was castrated yesterday due to a lost testicle - we were advised this was sensible as it could cause cancer in later life if not removed. I collected him from the vets at 2pm and he has been vomiting ever since - all through the night, all day today. He can't even keep water down. He is clearly disorientated and occasionally gets up and tries to run somewhere before falling over.
I am so worried and upset. I've called the vets and am taking him at 3:30 but sat here and just wanted some support really before i go.

Poor little pup I can't believe how the vet treated you both. You must feel so helpless. I am keeping everything crossed for him and hoping he recovers quickly

LEMmingaround · 20/02/2014 13:43

Flora, i hear what you are saying but there is not likely to be much change in the bloods over 24hrs so its more informative to wait. There's not much else to be done other than keep him on a drip to keep him hydrated and his kidneys flushed through and a steroid inj to boost function (that is a once a month thing though so wont need another just yet). That and waiting and hoping that the kidney function picks up, so far the signs are good.

DramaAlpaca · 20/02/2014 13:46

I've just seen this thread & am Shock and Angry at the first vet & what your poor pup has gone through. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Floralnomad · 20/02/2014 13:54

I think we will have to agree to differ LEM blood results can change hourly and if his potassium levels are too high or too low that can be corrected with the fluids / insulin / dextrose etc . That said I'm sure the vet knows what he /she is doing .

LEMmingaround · 20/02/2014 14:01

They did say the potassium levels were normal, which is good - but yes, that is worth keeping a check on if its fluctuating, it would be apparent if there as a drop in pottasium though. Its by the by though and not for us to debate :) What is important is tht the vets are looking after him now and he is getting good care, it sounds like he is.

namechange74 · 20/02/2014 14:31

sorry i nodded off. I think they'd checked something when i talked to them this morning but i can't remember what it was. They mentioned phosphorous too yesterday but i don't really understand what impact that has on him either but i'm hopeful i'll be able to have a chat with the vet at 3pm when we visit him. I cannot wait to see his little face.
I also just want to add that i am so very grateful for you all taking the time to write and offer your support and professional advice, it really is making me feel so much better. You don't know how much x

I'm so hoping he's ok when you see him. Still keeping everything crossed. Such unnecessary suffering and especially for a pup.

Hope you get somewhere with finding out what's wrong and why and that he's all fixed up soon.

You've had some great advice from those with knowledge on here, I can only offer a hand to hold and the biggest get well wish for little pup.

Please let us know how he is.

shallweshop · 20/02/2014 16:56

Just checked in to see how things are. I hope you had some nice cuddles with your pup and that he is getting stronger.

namechange74 · 20/02/2014 17:08

hi all. 'Little' was very pleased to see us bless him, he couldn't contain himself. He was in a kennel with his blanket and his toy, he came out and we sat with him for about 10 minutes, unfortunately he was on his drip so we couldn't take him outside which i was hoping to do - i will ask if we can tomorrow.

The vet nurse was great, she said he was very chirpy, wanted to play etc when she took him out to the toilet. He is eating, drinking and weeing so they remain positive that he is looking stable at the moment. That said, it's too early to say if there's any significant improvement apparently and she said we wouldn't know til they run the blood test tomorrow or maybe even on Saturday which is agonising for us but at least they are giving him the best possible chance. He hasn't been sick still - they said this was a good sign too.

Please continue to keep all crossed for my little lad, i told him everyone is rooting for him and that he had to get better and come home soon. Horrid to leave him there, he was crying when we left Sad

Gileswithachainsaw · 20/02/2014 17:15

So glad you got to see him and give him cuddles!!! My fingers will remain crossed for you and for him I will be waiting for news he's home where he belongs.
He can't ignore all of us right?!! X

namechange74 · 20/02/2014 17:15

It seems so crazy that he can outwardly appear so 'well' and yet be critically ill and may die. My DD can't understand, i've explained exactly what is wrong with him to her but she sees him wagging his tail and thinks he's made a miraculous recovery you know? (she's not silly btw, just eternally optimistic)

OP posts:
namechange74 · 20/02/2014 17:16

Giles no he bloody cannot ignore us all! He's being prayed for too all over the place!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/02/2014 17:20

The fact that he is producing urine must mean that his kidneys are functioning to some extent, so that sounds like such good news. So glad to hear he's doing so well.

namechange74 · 20/02/2014 17:22

indeed - loving his wee! (never thought i'd say that) -

OP posts:
fanoftheinvisibleman · 20/02/2014 17:25

Hope he's feeling better soon x

permaquandry · 20/02/2014 17:59

Sorry, I have no idea how to put a pic on but would LOVE to see one of him, I'll show it to ddog so she can give a get well slurp.

LEMmingaround · 20/02/2014 18:00

I think you will need to put a picture on your profile as there doesn;t seem to be the facility to put pics on here.

I pm'd you and i would say, tentetively, that its looking more positive that it did yesterday, but that we still have some more waiting to do.

If positive thoughts good get him better, he'll be home by the weekend Wink
