My pup was castrated yesterday due to a lost testicle - we were advised this was sensible as it could cause cancer in later life if not removed. I collected him from the vets at 2pm and he has been vomiting ever since - all through the night, all day today. He can't even keep water down. He is clearly disorientated and occasionally gets up and tries to run somewhere before falling over.
I am so worried and upset. I've called the vets and am taking him at 3:30 but sat here and just wanted some support really before i go.

Only just read your thread and have been crying for your little puppy. I have a six month old miniature schnauzer so think I can imagine just how you are feeling. Definitely pursue that useless vet. Always thought people who worked with animals would be kind and caring he sounds anything but .Will be following your thread and thinking of you. Get better soon little pup xx

mrsharkness2 · 24/02/2014 23:58

Crossing everything here for your boy.
We had a Snoopy many moons ago when I was a girl. He lived til the ripe old age of 16. Here's hoping your little one does too :-)

I just found this thread, started crying on page 1 of course and have ridden the roller coaster of the past 13 days in one go. Poor Snoopy and what an odious person his initial vet was. So so so hope he is doing okay and will be home with his people as soon as.

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/02/2014 09:22

How is he this morning?

namechange74 · 25/02/2014 09:22

Hello all, thanks for endless support.
Found out last night that shit vet was previously a horse vet before becoming a general one, which explains alot about his manner/lack of empathy. I've sent DH off to work with the insurance information and told him to ring them, i'm slightly anxious about my ever increasing bill. Last night alone was quoted at £1k and that was before they realised his liver is not right and that they were going to put him back on a drip for 48 hours so god only knows where we are at now. I realised our policy said that you had to call them before he was sent to a specialist - of course i didn't do this as it was the last thing on my mind. I think someone up thread said i could get shit vet to pay all these bills as he'd be insured for this type of eventuality? any advice on that gratefully received as if our insurers don't pay out - well, that will add salt to the already very painful wound - paying for a dog on deaths door through no fault of our own.... Confused
I've got to go to meetings this afternoon, hoping i can get it together enough to appear dynamic and professional - yeah right... xx

Hi Giles
Just waiting for the vets to ring and tell me how he is after last night, i asked her to ring before 10 (going to work then) so i'll update if i hear from her before i leave the house.

Still thinking of you and snoopy Thanks

Fingers are still crossed for some good news today. I hope the phone call brings positive news.

or snoopy your in trouble do you hear me

of course your probably far to cute to do anything but tell you off with cuddles

Floralnomad · 25/02/2014 10:25

Not to put a downer on things but you really need to sort out the insurance / payment without considering the original vet ( ie if you end up having to pay can you afford it ) because its unlikely he will pay up willingly and court could take a long time . You also have to prove that he caused the problems and with no pre--OP bloods that could be difficult . Hope your boy has good news today.

LEMmingaround · 25/02/2014 11:19

Flora, i do agree that the payment from the other vet should be disregarded at this stage as it cannot be relied upon, there is no way he will make that payment voluntarily because that will be sort of admitting liability.

I'm not sure the lack of pre-op bloods are the issue though. Firstly, the dog is undergoing tests now to see if there was an underlying condition or not. If there was, then ok, the case is not quite so strong, BUT the main issue for me here is the behaviour of the first vet when the OP voiced her concerns. They were dismissed and the OP had to take her dog to another vet to get him the treatment he needed - IV fluids. This should have happened the very first time she went back to the vets with a sick dog. The dog was sent home before it was fully awake, this would ring alarm bells with any decent vet if a dog was still asleep or not alert a couple of hours post-op. The dog was not observed for long enough post-op to ensure that no issues were developing. So even if the dog did have a pre-existing condition, this was made far worse by what happened post-surigically. If there are no pre-existing conditions that can be identified, then questions have to be aske about what happened during, and directly after surgery.

I would think that it wouldn't be a problem regarding referring to specialist without informing insurance company as it was an urgent referral, there wasn't time to get persmission to do this. That is what i would be saying if your insurers give you any problems.

I really hope snoopy is feeling better and that he continues to improve and that you also get some anwers. Flowers

ToffeeOwnsTheSausage · 25/02/2014 11:43

Thinking of Snoopy.

Floralnomad · 25/02/2014 14:33

I am in no way defending the first vet but no doubt he will be able to come armed with very many stories of successful castrations and procedures that he has carried out . Hence unless somebody can categorically state that something he did would have caused the same result in any other dog surely he will be able to cite some underlying and unknown pre existing condition has caused the problem . I think this is going to be a hard case to prove and a lot of it will be the owners word against his , he is not going to admit sending home an unrecovered dog , he treated the dog the following day and he is not going to admit to his comments on the third visit . Fingers crossed that he is on the mend .

namechange74 · 25/02/2014 15:45

Hi all.

We agree that we need to disregard 1st vet (in terms of any comeback against him financially/to pay these bills) and yes in answer to the question, we can afford to pay should we need to although DH spoke to the insurers earlier who have no issue with the referral so looks fine.

DH just spoke to the specialist who said that snoops is bright eyed and bushy tailed and is still on his drip. They're running more tests this afternoon/evening so we can't collect him til tomorrow. Hopefully they will call us again later with a further update. I'm keen to understand about his high liver enzymes and what the ramifications are... oh i wish i'd paid attention in biology!

Any vets on here with any ideas?! Grin

Glad to hear he is still doing well , I'm not being negative about the prospects with the first vet just trying to be realistic .

namechange74 · 25/02/2014 16:19

floral i know you're not! I think you're right... i just get so angry, with myself for putting him in there in the first instance, for the vet for fucking him up and then for dismissing us out of hand, for not shouting loud enough all the way along at everyone - i know my dog, i knew he was very ill. I didn't trust myself which is something i'm learning to do as i get older, my instincts are generally right, i need to stop listening to that bloody inner voice that says 'you're being neurotic Mrs NC, everyone knows better than you' IYKWIM? and now i'm bloody rambling.... Grin
Very much appreciate your support Floral xx

I also agree with you flora - I think the second vet that namechange went to said that there had been other complaints about that vet, it would be good if she could get her other clients to complain to the RCVS, i do know of a vet that was struck off due to multiple complaints (among other reasons not for this thread). That would be my approach because you are right, he could very easily talk himself out of this.

Namechange - Liver enzymes can be raised for lots of reasons - one of them can be a reaction to anaesthetic, medication etc. There are a couple of enzyme that the vets will be looking at that will help them to differentiate what is going on, in terms of if there is any damage to the liver or if the liver has just had to be working extra hard for some reason or another - when we think that both the liver and kidney's are involved (among other things) in ridding the body of toxins, anything that puts strain on both of those organs will result in raised enzymes and if its severe will affect function.

Really pleased that he is looking bright - that really is the best indicator there is :)

Gileswithachainsaw · 25/02/2014 17:36

Glad he's looking bright!! :) come on puppy keep going we want to hear your coming home!!!!

permaquandry · 26/02/2014 10:24

How's Snoopy today? Have you spoken with the vet? I hope work is ok. Thanks

namechange74 · 26/02/2014 18:29

Hiya MN. Well good news... Snoop is homeGrin DH collected him this afternoon as his bloods showed everything had reduced back to normal range. We are to feed him normally (to see if it has any effect) and get bloods re tested Friday or early next week. I am on the train home from London and am soooo excited!!! Thank you all for your kind words, advice, empathy and patience over the last two weeks. It has made this awful experience much more bearable having people to talk to when I've been so worried. X

Too late to lend support, but so glad that everything seems to have turned out OK. What a story though! I hope your little man continues to recover and that you get financial redress from shitty vet too.

heronsfly · 26/02/2014 19:39

Ive been following your thread too, so glad Snoopy is on the mend at last Grin
