Some may recall my horror at finding out my little girl's (12 year old Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier) nasal issues (not being able to breathe through it) turned out to be cancer in her nasal passage. A very aggressive cancer which is growing on her soft palette and so can't be successfully removed.
Well, on the advice from the specialist, I had her operated on, to buy time, by removing the surface lump so she could breathe but not have invasive surgery.
It bought us my DS's 3rd birthday, my birthday, Christmas & New Year. About 1.5 to 2 months in all.
But her nasal passage is getting blocked again and tonight she's having to breathe through her mouth more than her nose... It's time :(
Do I do it on Monday or Friday?
I'm going away with work on Tuesday until Wednesday evening, hate the thought of missing time with her but.. If I wait until Friday I could ask for Thursday off to spend the day, alone, with my darling girl. But.. Friday is my sisters birthday... Should I wait until Saturday?
She's still eating & drinking, wags her tail etc. but it's bothering her. Oh God, I know this is it, do I delayit a week or admit defeat and book her in?
If its Monday then my DH won't be able to be there.
Maybe Thursday is the day, in the afternoon...
Bollocks.

Don't worry about bathing and grooming if she doesn't like it - perhaps a gentle brush through with talcum powder (Johnson's baby powder was recommended to us) if she's a bit pongy. Def ask vet's advice, but don't be surprised if they are a bit cagey - we had a younger, less experienced vet when our cat was unwell and I regret to this day the extra 24 hours he lived because we took it. It is your decision alone, and you will know what is right for her.

MummyNic · 16/01/2012 11:39

She's not eating at moment but she often eats well for 2 weeks then doesn't eat for 3/4 days. Just managed to get her to eat a treat... Don't normally have to coax that!!
Neighbour is coming with me, she walked in and Moli jumped at her in excitement and wagged her tail yet an hour ago she was trembling!!Confused
Maybe it's an infection and totally unrelated to nasal cancer? Hmm
Will suggest that to vet.
Fit to be sure I don't get this wrong Sad

Thinking of you today.

MummyNic · 16/01/2012 16:45

Confused she's still here!! Grin
She made a complete liar of me today, jumping around like a puppy Blush
Temp is slightly raised in that it's the high end of normal. She checked her back & hips and all seems well.
She's be given pain killers and taking back Friday.
Vet said "there's still life in the old girl".
I still don't think it'll be long as she's not eating treats today Shock but I'll see how she is when I get back.
Going to give her a much needed bath tonight.

Pleased to hear you will have some more cuddles and fun together, just take it one day at a time..

ExitPursuedByaBear · 16/01/2012 17:08

Great news, hope she continues to astound you.

Elibean · 16/01/2012 17:30

Here's to another day of cuddles and, hopefully, treats then Smile

Ephiny · 16/01/2012 17:38

Oh that's good news. Make sure you enjoy whatever time you have left together :)

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 16/01/2012 18:10

I love when dogs stick two fingers up at the world (and vets) and their owners and get a second wind. Enjoy the time you have, lots of cuddles and fun.

Grin
MummyNic · 16/01/2012 19:32

I even cried in front of my neighbour and she came with me for support, she must think I'm nuts!!!
The noise is still bad but she was leaping about like a 3 month old Blush
Glad to have more time but mentally exhausted as I was ready for it today.
Will see what Friday brings Smile

That's great news. I hope she keeps surprising you for a while yet :)

ExitPursuedByaBear · 16/01/2012 22:22

It is all part of the journey. Treasure every moment with her.

ProfessionalProcrastinator · 16/01/2012 23:54

Thinking of you and Moli MummyNic. Hope she's doing well Smile

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 19/01/2012 13:09

hi mummynic hope you and Moli are still together.

MummyNic · 19/01/2012 20:53

Just back from being away again and Moli is not at all good Sad
She hasn't eaten significantly for a week now. She's not even eating treats.
I'm sure I saw her wobble on her back leg earlier.
Her nose is a bit runny Confused

Have a late morning appointment with vet tomorrow, going to see if they can make it a late one so DH can come.

Putting DS in nursery for the day to give her peace and quiet.

Will lift her onto bed tomorrow and have a cuddle like we used to.

This really is it now Sad

And this is how you know it's time....
I'll be thinking of you and Moli tomorrow. Let us know how you are feeling.

MummyNic · 20/01/2012 08:41

Feel awful, barely slept, she's uncomfortable now, struggles to lie down, so I think the cancer has spread Sad
Pain relief is taking the edge off but only just. She's not whimpering / crying / yelping but I know she's not comfortable.
Appointment is at 6pm so DH can say goodbye, I know it's going to kill me doing this. Already got that pain in my chest caused by my heart breaking.
DS is at nursery, bless him. Friend will babysit him.
Crying ready Sad

It's never easy, but this is the last great act of love. Thinking of you x

horsemadmom · 20/01/2012 09:57

My heart goes out to you. You are doing the right thing for her.
It is not easy but from my own experience I can tell you that it will be gentle and Moli will be free of pain.

MummyNic · 20/01/2012 10:16

Just did a mercy dash to vets for strong pain killers, just to buy today so that DH can come. Waiting for it to kick in, if it doesn't I shall have to do it earlier. Her needs are more important Sad
Wish I'd been home on Wed, I'd have done it then. Bloody work Angry

Thinking of you. You are doing absolutely the right thing for your lovely dog. It is one important act of kindness we owe to our much loved pets. x

nursenic · 20/01/2012 10:32

Thinking of you. Our beloved pet had to be put to sleep on Christmas Day a couple of years ago. It was so peaceful and dignified. So much kinder then what we humans have to endure...

She's a lucky little dog, to have such thoughtful owners.

MummyNic · 20/01/2012 11:22

She's lying down now so the tramadol must be working. Will give her another one in 7 hrs rather than 8, as it took an hour to work and I want her comfortable for her final journey.

OP posts:
horsemadmom · 20/01/2012 11:28

Stroking her and reminding her that you are there is just as important as the painkillers. You are doing all the right things.
