Sorry for the delay - internet went down just as I clicked create conversation....

OP posts:

cheers MegReally's sensible two-fingered salute to fate

PersephoneSnape, yeah, I don't mind a bit that some can't see it/aren't interested. I tend to avoid stuff with Ianto in it because he bores the pants off me (in the not-interesting way).

I do think think Ten/Martha is interesting now and I love River Song to bits. But that's pretty much my shippiness for DW done (Oh, alright then, I might have peeked at Ten/Jack and Martha/Sarah-Jane, but I wouldn't write any...)

I'm doing a normal story with our universe's Doctor and Jenny, so I can pretty much guarantee the shippiness will be non-existent in that one.

serenity · 11/07/2008 15:25

I get that Kay - there's an awful lot of stuff I read (some of which I'd hesitate to mention on MN ) that I could never imagine writing myself. With Dw stuff I much prefer Ten/Martha to Ten/Rose, but I think that's because there was such a huge amount of Ten/Rose 'domestic' stuff written - Rose breaches the void, they get married and raise little miniTimeLords, that I just lost interest. I live domestic, I don't want to read it I like your Rose/Ten (?) stuff because it actually follows on from the episodes and doesn't seem OOC.

Ten/Jack - ship rather than slash?

Martha/SJ - there's Martha/SJ?!

KayHarker · 11/07/2008 15:49

, yes but I can't recall where I read it, somewhere on LJ. Teensy-weensy crush on Freema Agyeman, and I was feeling a bit naughty..
Any, doesn't rule 34 apply to any questions of that nature?

Ten/Jack, well, generally speaking, almost anything with Jack in ends up in the smutty end of the pool anyway. I mind not a bit, I just couldn't write it well enough.

My Ten/Rose stories are so not going to end up in an ultra domestic nappy-fest. I don't mind childlin's when they work in a story (I've done it once, with River Song) but I can't for the life of me see Ten and Rose settling down to mundanity and having sprogs just yet. She's what, 22-ish? She leapt across universes, saved the world a number of times, and I think she's just discovering a career. Just because she's suddenly got the Doctor again doesn't mean she's suddenly going to be broody. Total leap, that, imo.

PersephoneSnape · 11/07/2008 16:36

nothing wrong with a bit of fic-king. I've started a horribly depressing one where rose/10.5 all goes wrong!

serenity · 11/07/2008 16:40

Rule 34, I imagine, must be something along the lines of 'if you can think of it, someones written it'......

Jack could go shopping for a pint of milk and it would end up smutty

One of the definitions I've read for ship rather than slash (apart from the gender thing) is that ship involves a roughly canonical pairing whereas slash is OOC (by the writers obviously, not by the heaving bosom'd fans) In that case Ten/Jack could be considered ship rather than slash despite it being a boy/boy thing

Good grief, I really am spending too much time thinking about this aren't I?

Gizmo · 11/07/2008 16:42
PersephoneSnape · 11/07/2008 16:48

i always thought 'ship' was a bit more romantic - (relation)ship whereas 'slash' was 'just' a lot of shagging. :D

serenity · 11/07/2008 16:56

I've definitely read romantic slash, think it still involved a great deal of touching though and I've read some incredibly nonromantic ship. You get PWP, or Porn Without Plot, with both.

PersephoneSnape · 11/07/2008 16:58

lord! but i'm sheltered!

and looking forwarsd to a little internet exploration over the weekend!

KayHarker · 11/07/2008 17:10

I prefer to call my PWP 'Plot, What plot?'

The ship/slash distinction is a bit of a blurry line, though. Although I did read a very good Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt slash story that was really well done and very moving. (and I skipped the last chapter because that pairing is so not doing it for me, ta very much).

Shipping doesn't have to be canon, though, or even based on anything substantial in the canon. But I'd say that there's certainly enough in the canon Ten/Jack thing to go on, just like there is with Martha.

Ten/Master is always an education. That phonecall in The Sound of Drums... tee hee...

KayHarker · 11/07/2008 17:13

Yeah, Rule 34 - if it exists, there is porn of it.

Which is amusing when it comes to Martha/SJ. Gets a bit more squicky when you start thinking about Zippy and George.

MegReally · 11/07/2008 17:23

okay, I am back from a very depressing visit to the library, which I made wearing trainers, yoga pants, a horrid raincoat, no make-up and a top which might once have been part of a pair of pyjamas. Who knows.

dd1 wanted to look for Doctor Who videos and there were none, apart from a very sad looking Daleks v Sylvester McCoy number which I said an emphatic 'no' to. Then she spies a poster of 'Quick Reads' with a picture of Martha on so we trudge round to the librarian to ask where they might be. We blearily tell her the Sylvester McCoy story. "Oh, it has to be David Tennant" she starts leering, and then we notice that she is marginally youthful and certainly more attractive than that Jenny lass DT is currently doing, and that in fact we not, as we thought, an important and fascinating member of a rare and unique band of mners, but a frumpy middle aged lady who has gone outside in her pyjamas under the guise 'getting videos for my daughter'.

I am desperately depressed now. Please tell me it is PMT.

motherinferior · 11/07/2008 17:26

I am lurking lovingly on this thread.

MegReally · 11/07/2008 17:29

oh and another thing from your friend in the pyjamas

I do get that that edit where he explains the human thing after the TARDIS has gone is lovely, and all, in the actual episode it would have made no sense because it would mean that what the original Doctor had done was dropped them off, said "This is a genocidal maniac, bye" and then pissed off back in his TARDIS, which wouldn't have made you cry, it would have made you fume, and be very perplexed.

Exposition has to happen before the actual plot does, imo

Gizmo · 11/07/2008 17:30

God yes, Meg...I'm beginning to get that feeling too.

I was having a quick chat with a friend of mine last night and mentioned accidentally getting two sets of tickets to see Hamlet. She fell about laughing when I confessed to my DT obsession crush and I definitely got the impression I was wearing an imaginary dirty mac. Probably murmuring: "I was watching your mouth...it's beautiful..."

MegReally · 11/07/2008 17:32

but I was wearing a dirty mac

UnquietDad · 11/07/2008 17:32

I think "Last of the Summer Wine" slash is possibly the most disturbing suggestion I have heard.

Gizmo · 11/07/2008 17:32
Gizmo · 11/07/2008 17:34

Oh God, UD, really?

Mind you, could have been worse: I'm now beginning to worry about the possibilities in 'Open All Hours'.

UnquietDad · 11/07/2008 17:35

"n-n-n-now then, G-g-g-Granville, when we're d-d-d-done you can f-f-fetch a cloth."

motherinferior · 11/07/2008 17:35

Or Good Life slash. That I really wouldn't want to read. And strangely it's so, well, feasible...

Gizmo · 11/07/2008 17:37

I'm sure Good Life Slash is ragingly popular, MI.

It's Felicity Kendell, after all....

motherinferior · 11/07/2008 17:39

And organic veg.

Gizmo · 11/07/2008 17:40

Isn't there a goat involved somewhere?

motherinferior · 11/07/2008 17:42

And mulch. Definitely mulch.

And, obviously, Margo being commanding yet secretly filthy. Oh god, I said it was feasible...
