Sorry for the delay - internet went down just as I clicked create conversation....

Torchwood S3 news:

Jack (as well as the obvious) is leaving.

Martha is replacing Jack.

The show is to be dumbed down a little and some of the sexual humour removed to allow for younger audiences (I thought they'd sorted that last season?)

Only 5 episodes have been made.

It's moving to the "Doctor Who" slot. This is so that they can make them run one to the other so people don't have a long wait between DW seasons.

Scheduled for Jan 09.

There's also rumours that SJA will be shorter too so it's possible the three will run an arc to cover for the fact that DW won't be on our screens for a proper season.

Has anyone ever scrambled the letters of Torchwood?

That's all I can find for now.

Won't bother watching if Martha is in charge. She is such a wooden actor IMO and doesn't exude any kind of convincing authority in the later episodes of Dr Who when she is meant to be a hotshot at Unit.

TinkerBellesMum · 04/08/2008 09:43

By the sounds of it it will be like when Giles left Buffy, only to return every other episode and have big chunks of return! We will be seeing Jack still! Obviously we know he can't be killed off.

tigermoth · 04/08/2008 10:11

I wonder what Jack will do, then? It's convenenient that he can't be killed off entirely, as you say he can then make as many guest appearances as he likes. And then there's David Tennant's foothold in future Dr Who programmes, as the half human Doctor who is with Rose.

Actually, I am very pleased that Torchwood is going to be less sexually explicit. I bet there's a lot of older children who watch Torchwood, just because Doctor Who has such a huge fan base, so I've always been uneasy about the sexual references in Torchwood. I think the storylines can be just as good and just as appealing to adults if the sexual element is reduced.

TheLadyofShalott · 04/08/2008 10:51

Yes, I've unscrambled Torchwood - the story is that the name was originally used to label the Dr Who tapes to protect them from being copied by staff - Dr Whon has a long history of using anagrams to keep secrets....

TinkerBellesMum · 04/08/2008 11:02

I can see them doing a DW programme that confuses the hell out of viewers and then it's revealed it's actually Clone Doctor and all falls into place. I can think of a few programmes who've done something similar, whether that's a good thing or not though, I don't know. I've thought of a few things from other series's to go with this new story - like Anya's panicking about dying!

Cappuccino · 04/08/2008 11:21

well personally I won't miss Jack, I didn't like him. I may be the only person in the world to feel this way but I think he was wooden, and the whole show was in danger of rotating around everyone fancying him.

And as for the sexual references I can do without them. Tbh for a 'sexy' show I found it about as erotic as a coathanger. I'd like to watch it with dd, I won't miss the idea that they were all shagging one another because I didn't care one way or the other

bring on the monsters

bring on the monsters

(sally of course you can say nice things about my fic on the blog! what's not to like about that? I'm not a writer person either, just playing)

sallyforth · 04/08/2008 11:56

Yeah, I found the "sexy" parts of Torchwood rather tedious. With good writing they shouldn't be necessary, anyway.

I will be sorry to see Jack go b/c I found him funny. I don't think Martha will fill the leader role very well. She does not have the charisma IMO.

serenity · 04/08/2008 12:05

Martha has signed a deal with ITV for some programme (I'll check in a minute) and won't now be in TW.

Rumours of Jack leaving are highly suspect (or so I hear)

The 5 episode arc will be shown over one week (I heard Easter myself)

UnquietDad · 04/08/2008 12:06

What?

What? WHAT??!

Cappuccino · 04/08/2008 12:07

well at least that means I will have more chance of not forgetting what happened

serenity · 04/08/2008 12:45

Just checked, yep, it's confirmed that she's going to be in Law & Order: London (UK cast, same production team as all the other US L&O's)

serenity · 04/08/2008 12:50

Having said that though it's being filmed now, which doesn't rule out TW - I would have thought it would be unusual however to be signed for both ITV and BBC shows. The implication I've got from other sites is that the deal makes her an ITV exclusive now (but could just be sad fanboys getting overwrought at her possibly leaving)

serenity · 04/08/2008 12:55

OK, should check everything before posting Looks like L&O and TW filming clashes so she definitely won't be in TW!

And I quote....
"Not only will there be a smaller dose of "Doctor Who" next season, but it seems that there will now be less of its spinoff "Torchwood" as well.
Executive Producer Julie Gardner confirmed to TV Guide that the series' third season will consist of just five episodes, corroborating earlier reports from at the beginning of this year that talked about major cutbacks on the show.

The five episodes will not be shown over five weeks, however. Instead, Gardner said they would be showed in a single week, with a new episode every night.

Scripts for the third season are now being written, and shooting is expected to begin in the middle of August. At the same time, "Torchwood" will not appear on BBC Three or BBC Two. In fact, it appears that the show is moving to BBC One, the home of its parent program, "Doctor Who."

John Barrowman, who plays the omni-sexual time agent in the series will return as Capt. Jack Harkness. But while Gardner said fans would be "pleased with the casting," it's still not clear who else is returning, or if rumors of Freema Agyeman and Noah Clarke joining the cast are true.

With the move to BBC One, there is a better chance that the show will be watered down from its more "adult" nature, one thing fans said they want to see continue on the show. If Agyeman and Clarke were to move over, however, there is a chance that BBC is expecting more crossover from the more family-friendly "Doctor Who" audience, thus will have to clean up some of the language and subject matter.

There is still no word on why BBC chose to make such drastic changes to the show that was a ratings winner for BBC Three in its first season, and continued to demand strong ratings after its move to BBC Two for its second season. It also is the top-rated scripted show on BBC America, although it's not clear if and when the third season would appear there."

TinkerBellesMum · 04/08/2008 13:18

Ooooh, can't believe everything from "a reliable source" then! The place I got the news from said it's a reliable source that has given them lots of stuff before. But then DW are known for lying!

tigermoth · 04/08/2008 20:33

Oh well, it was an interesting diversion and I guess there are lots of theories around. I don't dare look on DW websites otherwise I will be drawn in.

It's such a pity they are rationing both DW and Torchwood in 2009. It is just for financial reasons?

Cappuccino · 04/08/2008 20:59

is it the whole 'special telly' thing?

are we meant to keep champing at the bit for more instead of getting so blase about it that we wear our pyjamas to wear it and stop getting dressed up and sitting up straight?

Cappuccino · 04/08/2008 20:59

to 'watch it'

edam · 04/08/2008 21:07

Just watched the Titanic Christmas episode all over again on Beeb 3. Sigh... am even crosser now that they are giving everyone next year (well, this year but in our terms next year) off.

Yes, I know filming is demanding etc. etc. etc. but that's their job. They aren't hospital cleaners on the minimum wage being exploited by evil employers because they are illegal immigrants. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Cappuccino · 04/08/2008 21:14

I don't know really where I stand on this

on the one hand, Waking the Dead is consistently good (well, it's bonkers hokum, but consistently so) and it only has miniseries

and when you get a series that runs for years and years it does tend to get progressively worse

HOWEVER it is a family show and kids like regularity and don't tend to go checking the Radio Times with a red biro every week

and the whole 'playground talk' thing that RTD is constantly on about will lose momentum if it all gets split up

and I think the idea that Sarah Jane and Torchwood and Dr Who are all one entity that they can interchange at will and everyone will tune in regardless is just cobblers and a leetle bit arrogant if you ask me. It assumes RTD has the same kind of following as Joss Whedon and however much he may want it, it's not the case.

Cappuccino · 04/08/2008 21:15

obv I mean that Dr Who is a family series, not Waking the Dead

rofl at the idea

"Come on dd1 we don't want to miss the beginning where the semi-naked stoned men bludgeon each other to death in a field"

Katisha · 05/08/2008 13:07

DS2 (6) has developed a tendency to use the different doctors as historical eras.

eg "Mummy were you alive when it was the 1st Doctor?"

"Was I born when it was the 7th Doctor?"

I need a list of dates...

UnquietDad · 05/08/2008 17:22

Katisha:
1st Doc - Hartnell - 1963-66
2nd Doc - Troughton - 1966-69
3rd Doc - Pertwee - 1970-74
4th Doc - T Baker - 1974-81
5th Doc - Davison - 1982-84
6th Doc - C Baker - 1984-86
7th Doc - McCoy - 1987-89
8th Doc - McGann - 1996
9th Doc - Eccleston - 2005
10th Doc - Tennant - 2005-09+

Katisha · 05/08/2008 18:28

Excellent. So DS2 was born in Doc8/6 (or Doc9/-4, making allowances for there not actually being a doctor at all after McGann for a bit) We were married in Doc8/2 etc...

This could get dull...
