S'OK, he's going to be fine - next TARDIS stop will be in sunny South London and I'll make him a nice cup of tea and take care of him. He needs to come and curl up on the sofa with a quilt, some decent icecream and someone waiting for a chance to pounce sympathetic.

SciFiFan · 08/07/2008 16:10

My blinking YouTube keeps stopping to load up it's driving me mad. Maybe it's my PC - can I be bothered rebooting or should I just keep watching juddering clips of DT.

MegReally · 08/07/2008 16:11

oh oh

HANG ON

this is turning into a right soppy old mess. Everyone get your knickers back on and let's talk about Cybermen.

JackieNo · 08/07/2008 16:14

We're like a bunch of 14-year-olds, aren't we. Fun though. Enjoyed both that youtube thing and Kay's latest offering - thanks for that.

serenity · 08/07/2008 16:17

Ahem, yes.

Cybermen.

Has anyone seen any of the filming pics yet? There's a really weird looking cyberwraith thingy in a cloak.

MegReally · 08/07/2008 16:22

I want to remember what happened with them last time. I can't remember. I can just remember lots of trudging.

JackieNo · 08/07/2008 16:24

Yes, there was trudging, wasn't there. Over a lawn. Where Rose's father and mother lived, in the alternate universe . Can't remember what actually happened, though.

From Wiki:

In the "Rise of the Cybermen"/"The Age of Steel" two-part story, the Tenth Doctor crashes down into a parallel universe where the Cybermen are being created on modern-day Earth. These alternate Cybermen were created as an "upgrade" to humanity and the ultimate move into cyberspace, allowing the brain to survive in an ageless steel body. These Cybermen also referred to themselves as "Human Point 2 (Human.2)" and "deleted" all those deemed incompatible with the upgrade. They could electrocute humans with a touch.

These Cybermen were created by John Lumic, a terminally ill and insane genius whose company, Cybus Industries, had advanced humanity considerably. To find a way to survive, he perfected a method to sustain the human brain indefinitely in a cradle of chemicals, bonding the synaptic impulses to a metal exoskeleton. The Cybermen "handle bars" were part of a high-tech communications device called an EarPod. Also created by Lumic, the EarPods were used extensively in the place of MP3 players and mobile phones, allowing information to be directly downloaded into people's heads.

Lumic began to trick and abduct homeless people and convert them into Cybermen, and assassinated the President of Great Britain after the President rejected his plans. Using the EarPods, Lumic took mental control of London, marching thousands to be cyber-converted. He was betrayed by an old friend who damaged his wheelchair's life-support systems. He had told the Cybermen that he would upgrade 'only with my last breath' and since that moment was at hand he was involuntarily upgraded into the Cyber-Controller, a superior model of Cyberman. However, the Tenth Doctor and his companions, having accidentally landed on the parallel Earth, managed to foil his plans. They freed London from mental control and disabled the Cybermen's emotional inhibitors, causing them to go insane and in some cases explode. Lumic himself fell to his apparent death into the burning remains of his factory. A human resistance group, the Preachers, then set about to clean up the remainder of Lumic's factories around the world.

These Cybermen reappeared in the 2006 season finale "Army of Ghosts" and "Doomsday". It is to be noted that these Cybermen also use energy weapons built into their right arms. However, in "The Age of Steel" after the conversion sequence, the newly created Cybermen can be seen to have the retractable weapons in place after exiting the conversion chambers. Having infiltrated that world's version of the Torchwood Institute and discovering a breach between universes caused by the passage of an interdimensional void ship, the Cybermen used it to invade the Doctor's universe. However, the void ship's users, the Daleks, also revealed themselves, leading to all-out war across London with mankind caught in the crossfire. Eventually, the Doctor re-opened the breach, causing the Cybermen and Daleks (who had been saturated with background radiation from the Void) to be sucked back into it. The breach then sealed itself, leaving the Cybermen and Daleks (except the Cult of Skaro, who used their emergency temporal shift function to escape) seemingly trapped in the Void forever.

For various reasons I actually have a photo of Lumic on my profile......(should you wish to remind yourselves)

KayHarker · 08/07/2008 16:48

Ah, yes, Cybermen. Wearing their metal flares and stomping about in graveyards.

(BTW, in case you're still interested in the not-exactly-sci-fi-much-more-smut stuff, you could read part the fourth.)

But you probably won't, so lets discuss whether or not the Lumic Cybermen should be the model for the rest of the new series, or should there be a re-introduction of the old-school Cybers, with their separate back story etc.

Gizmo · 08/07/2008 16:53

Hard to see how Lumic's Cyberman are going to end up in a Victorian graveyard, I must say.

But then I am very unimaginative. Which is why I am only a marketing manager, rather than a purveyor of fine porn quality fanfic

I've read that if you squint in a certain way you can see the Lumic Industries logo on the Cybermen in the trailer - the Daleks opened up the void and the gaps between the Universes, so there's always a chance some managed to escape and somehow ended up a different time and reality from their own.

I've had to turn the air conditioning on.

Kay, you are ruinous for my carbon footprint

KayHarker · 08/07/2008 17:08

I'm rather pleased with that one meself Do we like Doctor's perspective? Thought it might be more fun.

Yes, I was thinking that the Lumic Cybers had probably ended up there after the end of Doomsday, through timey-wimey stuff. It would be fun to think up a different reason, but RTD does rather tend to go for straightforward with that sort of set-up.

I have done absolutely nothing this afternoon. And I don't give a monkey's.

serenity · 08/07/2008 17:15

I've cleaned the bathroom, drank several cups of coffee, watched DT on YouTube, read some heiniously immoral fanfics (not Kay's!) read a very nice fanfic (Kay's), figured out how to password word documents as I actually buckled down and wrote some fanfic, but noones going to read it, ever. I'm now munching honey nut cereal and trying to figure out how to make it look like I haven't been doing that (apart from deleting all my internet history and running around like a maniac)

Gizmo · 08/07/2008 17:16

Kay, you may think you have done absolutely nothing.

I think you have made one 30something mother very happy. And probably, once he gets home this evening, one 30something father, too

MadamePlatypus · 08/07/2008 17:18

Can't keep up with this thread. Re: making the kiss scene longer, I think you have to accept that some poor deranged viewers are still clinging onto the idea that its all about monsters and would probably cut the romance out all together.

Anyway, its difficult to do justice to these things on the screen - always so much better in print

MegReally · 08/07/2008 17:49

this could easily turn into a writing community. We need to hire a library and get some Mellow Birds coffee, an annoying smelly man, and a woman in her fifties with dyed hair who is writing her 'life story'

serenity · 08/07/2008 18:03

According to a journo friend of mine (who writes fanfic in secret) Real Writers (tm) look down their noses at fanfic writers. We'd be the writing community that nobody acknowledges (could add to the angst quota though.....)

KayHarker · 08/07/2008 18:12

Of course real writers look down their noses at fanfic writers. Golly, it's not like I just gave you all art

It's a hobby, like cross-stitch, it's not a job. You only get kudos for writing fic-style stuff if you're RTD

Still, I'm quite content that my writing is at the very least better than most things involving Ben Chatham (OG joke for them as knows) I won't be sending any of it off for publication under any guise. Would you believe, my for-publication work-in-progress is a children's book. You'll be relieved to know there's no porn in it.

RustyBear · 08/07/2008 18:14

Hmm - DH is part of a fanfic writing community - they seem to do a lot of socialising & not much writing - at least DH hasn't uploaded anything onto the site since 2003

They are Captain Scarlet, though, so they don't have David Tennant a current series to get them going.

DH did do one story which was a bit of a CS/DW crossover, where Sarah-Jane turned out to be the grandmother of Rhapsody Angel, so he was muttering about rewriting after School Reunion - maybe he won't have to now though, with Luke suddenly appearing.

yes Dior I was sniggering at that too

oh I am completely comfortable being ostracised by clever people. If that was my life's purpose it would be absolutely fine. Anyway since I am actually a hairy handed trucker I don't mix in many literary circles on a daily basis. I can live without indepth chats with Mariella Frostrup

last night was a very sad night. We attempted to watch Bonekickers, which I wasn't fussed for but dh had been looking forward to for ages because he likes archaeology. God but it was dire, we couldn't watch past the first half.

There is still a need for a Project for Autumn
