I was in by myself last night and wanted something easy to watch so I tried that new Murder in Benidorm series on C5. OMG - what a load of drivel. Makes Death in Paradise seem like a Dicken’s adaptation. Bad acting and ridiculous plot (and I do watch some crap!).
What was John Hannah thinking taking the lead role? I got about halfway through and turned it off & went to bed in disgust!

Great news re MBB being cancelled. Why on earth do they think this pile of unfunny shite is what we want to watch at Christmas.

My dd watched it, she must have been about 16/17 at the time, I presumed it was teen tv not really targeted at adults?! 😂
I mean I may be wrong and of course anyone can watch what they want but I thought it would be a bit like your dh watching Sabrina the teenage witch or similar!!

eta I was taking about riverdale not big brother…

Well that would make more sense then, but there are plenty of “teen” dramas that are great viewing for adults too - eg Buffy, The 100, Veronica Mars… just being designed for teens doesn’t stop it being terrible usually.

Peonyperfection · 18/08/2026 16:20

Started BBC’s The Hairdresser Mysteries today. It’s awful.

I used to thoroughly enjoy watching the kids' sitcom My Parents are Aliens. 😁

Whilst I agree with you, I still wish Brendan O'Carroll a speedy recovery.

A strong contender for worst kids' TV show ever has to be Teacup Travels. It's not trashy at all, but it's soooooo boring!

It's like somebody from Victorian times, who never had children themselves, thought they knew exactly what children in the 21st century woukd absolutely love - to watch as a bonus bit of fun after their double-Latin treat!

Is that still on - we used to love watching it! I especially liked the fact that Auntie Lizzie (Gemma Jones) lived in the beautiful groundskeeper's house in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh.

Fast800goingforit · 23/08/2026 19:09

Mrs Brown's Boys is dreadful. Thankfully there'll be no Christmas special this year.

The Good Ship Murder is utter shite.

I also don't understand how Death in Paradise has not only lasted more than one series and had a spin off.

Absolutely!

I don't actually know if it's still on - our DS (only child) is 14 now, so our CBeebies days are long behind us!

When it was on, as an adult,I did love the setting, the scenery and the general 'cosiness' about it - in a bit of a 'Last of the Summer Wine' way, maybe - but it never struck me as the kind of thing that would grab the attention of the young kids at whom it was aimed. It seemed very anachronistic - more like a programme that the Victorians would have made for children, if they had had telly back then.

Yes, absolutely. Whilst I share the excitement that there will be no MBB Christmas special this year, we mustn't lose sight of the fact that Brendan has had a serious and painful injury.

I wish him a speedy recovery and lots of happiness in life... I just would rather him not be on the TV in MBB; although there ARE lots of other channels and an Off button available, so it's hardly like anybody is forced to watch it when it is on.

That said, he and some of his family had their own comedy panel show a few years back - called 'For Facts' Sake' - and whilst it was far from the best or most enduring show ever, I did find it quite entertaining at the time.

Has it ever been explained, though, why it's called Mrs Brown's Boys when he also has a daughter? That bit always bugs me, even as a non-fan of the show.

Oh god yes, the hordes of mobility scooters!! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

It was like an 80s edition of Wish You Were Here - I was waiting for Judith Chalmers to pop up 😂😂😂

Spoiler alert for anyone who plans on watching Episode 1……

Carlos did it - the hotel owner. The murdered band members was planning to go travelling with his daughter, Isabelle. After the death of his wife, he described Isabelle as “his rock” and he couldn’t contemplate her no longer being there. He crept in through an interconnecting wardrobe from the next room (don’t ask 😂) and although he wore a sombrero (no cliches here😂😂) to hide from the cameras, he straightened a picture when walking down the corridor so they knew it was him.

Thanks 😂
i used to love Wish You Were Here back in the day.

Obviously I don’t wish him ill, but so glad it’s not on. Hopefully something decent in its place 🙏

The one where Arthur Smith has sold his soul to the devil. Someone gets accosted at the tip for their old tat, some wanky 'specialist' tarts it up and then it gets flogged on at great expense. I call it I Saw You Coming, in honour of the great Harry Enfield sketches.

Arthur Smith?! Well, we all need a pension plan, I suppose.

I had to look that one up, and found "Will a disaster with a tufting gun leave Sarah's chances of saving a 100-year-old rug in tatters?"

Now I have to look up "tufting gun".

BBC One - Money for Nothing, Series 18, Woman with a Golden Gun - Not!

Will a tufting gun mishap leave the chances of saving a 100-year-old rug in tatters?

Oh jfc..I'd forgotten about this pile of steaming shit.
Hang about the cooncil tip
Get a piece of shit
And as if by magic
Turn it into
Another piece of shit.

To be fair, they do usually make a profit on the items they make, and it's a good message that throwing things away which can be used is wasteful.

ParsleySageToiletDuckAndBinBags · 25/08/2026 16:02

Quite often, though, lazy and non-community-minded people just take things to the tip when they're still perfectly decent, useful and desirable; but they personally just don't want or need them anymore.

I bet they could find loads of pieces of furniture and other items that have been brought to be skipped, rescue them and then re-sell them exactly as they are.

I realise that this would change the whole raison d'etre of the programme somewhat...!

ParsleySageToiletDuckAndBinBags · 25/08/2026 16:05

Was it Money For Nothing where they got a reputation (and mockery) for always 'transforming' random stuff - at least 50% of all of their projects - into horrible ugly lamps? Or was that a different programme?

Our local council has several tidy tips round the area, one of which has a large 'Reuse Centre' where you can drop stuff like that off.

I LOVE Arthur Smith. As in truly love him.

So I was a bit horrified to catch him narrating this awful daytime show Money For Nothing.

I quite like a bit of upcycling, so thought I'd watch a few times. One time that Jay Vail took some old chair or cupboard or something and made it into an item so hideous I sincerely thought it must be a joke. But no! He did it with a straight face 😮and it honestly was absolutely ghastly. And shoddy. It looked like something a 10 year old would do. And to think he got his gig on The Repair Shop off the back of that show.

Isn't there no charge for labour so false profit?

I guess it is because your amateur hobbyist restorer doing the same sort of upcycling wouldn't have labour costs because they are doing it themselves.

On the other hand, if they are thinking of doing it as a side hustle, how many hours are they going to be working to get the sort of profits that make it worthwhile?

AuntieBiotics · 26/08/2026 19:55

When the items are sent to a specialist upholsterer or painter or whatever, they DO charge for labour. And usually still make a profit.
