I was in by myself last night and wanted something easy to watch so I tried that new Murder in Benidorm series on C5. OMG - what a load of drivel. Makes Death in Paradise seem like a Dicken’s adaptation. Bad acting and ridiculous plot (and I do watch some crap!).
What was John Hannah thinking taking the lead role? I got about halfway through and turned it off & went to bed in disgust!

Benidorm or Murder in Benidorm? Two very different shows!

Ooooh! I should have read this comment first. I just googled and it’s Benidorm, not Murder in Benidorm.

That makes way more sense 😂

I remember a terrible sitcom with Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston, I can't remember what it was called.

ITV have had some terrible sitcoms over the years. Nearly always vehicles for some star or other that they wanted to promote but always awful. There was one with Davina McCall that was dire.

She was in a terrible sitcom called Big Top, that got cancelled very quickly - but I don't remember him in it.

I looked it up, it was called "Mad About Alice"
"Mad About Alice is a British sitcom that ran during 2004 for six episodes. Described as a sitcom with a silent 'h', it is regarded as one of the worst BBC sitcoms of 2004. It has never been repeated on the BBC, and there are no plans to release it on DVD, although some episodes are available on YouTube."

Haha reminds me of watching a quiz show Going for Gold. It came on after the afternoon episode of Home and Away years ago

“which vegetable starting with the letter P is green and also known as petite pois? No, Gunther, it’s not a potato”

I used to hate it when Henry Kelly said now it’s time for the “first round proper” - aaaargh

OonaStubbs · 22/09/2026 06:50

Going for Gold was also on the BBC so would have been on after Neighbours, not H&A.

Lifelover16 · 22/09/2026 08:03

Has to be the last few years of Strictly Come Dancing. Dire presenters, celebrities no one has heard of and chosen to tick all the DEI boxes, and quite obviously fixed competition.

Why can't TV companies just make good shows instead of bad ones? There's no way even the makers of some of these programmes think they are actually good. Would they watch them themselves?

What I don't get - and my thinking may be slightly shaped by the 70 Up programmes - is why they need to make new programmes at all, if they really don't have any decent ideas?! There are so many thousands (probably millions) of hours of top-quality classic TV in the archives.

Yes, some of it has aged badly or become horribly outdated for other reasons, and some of it was rubbish all along; but loads of it is still gold. Why they would lock those gems away in a dark vault forever and keep churning out new crap to show us instead is completely beyond me.
