David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

It wasn’t even a new idea in β€œSherlock” - although it may have been in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s time.

I suppose it was a slightly different use of the cummerbund, and modernised by incorporating coercive control.

The developing overarching backstory is interesting, in my opinion.

IliveInCambridge · 28/08/2026 00:57

( … not sure if it’s overarching or overarcing . Possibly either. It’s a story arc, and there’s an arch going over every episode from first to last, like a rainbow 🌈 )

moto748e · 28/08/2026 01:33

Yes, I think the story arc is more interesting than this week's murder. I didn't know about Sherlock, but surely it seemed pretty obvious he wasn't murdered during the dance?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2026 07:24

i have gone back to watch series 1
it was obviously different because he was impersonating his brother.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2026 07:24

and lucy and john wont fall in romantic love since they are still searching for james imo

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/08/2026 09:15

Tho she does seem more in tune with John

There doesn’t need to be a romance between Lucy and John to make it a good series. If they really need to add some romantic story surely it can be John meeting someone else? Not his brothers wife!

LaMarschallin · 28/08/2026 09:46

She wasn't his brother's wife when they met. It sounds like they were a group of children.
The programme itself has fed us the idea that John had feelings for Lucy and now that's becoming clear to Lucy.
But I agree, there's no need to have a romance between them.
Imo, there's no need for John to meet anyone. Some people are happy by themselves.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2026 09:50

i am really enjoying the reactions in series 1,
dc simon evans, who i now know from the Pitt
Carol Shaw is great
Carter giving him odd looks

I agree. Not every tv programme needs a romance

Yes I agree.

Also agree about people being happy alone. I know plenty.

It was bugging me where I recognised DCS Carol from; I had to look her up. Of course! She was the awful Pauline in Mum!

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2026 13:00

DSC carol was good as Pauline in mum and this is a similar sort of character too.

placemats · 28/08/2026 13:04

DSC Carol is good. Perhaps she and John should get together OR she knows where James is.

Yes - I couldn't understand why everyone just went along with the murder happening in the middle of the dance. Surely the first thought would be that he had been stabbed elsewhere and stumbled to the place where he finally expired.

I mean, I know that the series is a light-hearted. whimsical story which could just never happen in real life, and I am perfectly prepared to suspend my disbelief and go along with it as it is very funny, but the fact that absolutely nobody said "hang on, how do we know where the stabbing occurred?" just meant that I shouted at the TV a lot last night.

Didn't really enjoy that last episode, I'm getting confused with all the references and names from the last series.

I’m glad I’m not the only one.
I have forgotten the last series. πŸ™ˆ

Waitrose isn't a supermarket πŸ˜…

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2026 16:43

I don’t understand the stuff with the policeman or any of that. Cba to watch the last season.
No, Waitrose isn’t a supermarket is it Pauline ! lol

NewAgeNewMe · 28/08/2026 17:02

More importantly
what has happened to Ziegler????

lazymum99 · 28/08/2026 17:04

I can’t remember any of the details from season 1 except that he impersonated his brother who had disappeared. Which means I’m left with these ridiculous crimes being solved by John now and tbh it’s a bit boring

It was the anniversary of his daughters death. Maybe it was something to so with that.

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2026 17:13

Ziegler has been suspended, they don’t know why.
Maybe he’ll go off to another place to cause havoc there ?

NewAgeNewMe · 28/08/2026 17:19

Ahh maybe? But has been suspended? Why???
