David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

Because it's not the clothes. For me, anyway.
It's partly the clothes. And the hair - just imo.
But mainly it's the annoying yakking on, cutting across John and her son when their trying to say something when it's been shown over and over again how bright they are.
The ridiculous Girls' Own Annual charging off to become a journalist.
And the lack of insight into how useless she is compared to the others and how she can spoil things.
Quirky is fine if there are redeeming features: Cf John.
Quirky for the sake of it is just weird with no useful features.

But I wonder if this annoying uselessness is building up to something? Her hectoring and obtuseness might actually be the key to the whole conundrum?

NewAgeNewMe · 26/08/2026 16:44

I wonder if the new duo (can’t remember their names) have been brought in to oversee John and Carter? Or have access to the basement?

Well I am not the only one to have commented about her clothes. Is she meant to be quirky? She just looks ridiculous and I am pretty sure she didn't wear such strange clothes in the first series.

A bug of mine is socks with dresses or skirts as I think it looks awful and ridiculous unless you are a school girl. I may be sad but for me it distracts from the storyline especially as she is very annoying even without the silly clothes

Lucy did wear very short mini skirts in s1. Can't remember any ankle socks though.

Is there a dress code that women of a certain age (35 onwards) have to conform to in this country?

placemats · 26/08/2026 17:10

Are men allowed to wear 70s style, Open University lecturer clothing and have no derogatory remarks said about them?

DuncinToffee · 26/08/2026 17:12

I think her dress sense fits in with the series, it's part of the vibe.

It might be.
It's well written enough to be the case but I'm not sure I'll still be watching - I hope I will because I loved the first serves.

Sorry, quoting myself, but I hate having mistakes in my posts and it's too late to edit.

"Because it's not just the clothes*

her son when their trying to say something

her son when they're trying to say something

Think that's it.

Well the fashion for men to wear shorts with socks half way up their legs looks just as ridiculous and awful

Well dressing like a toddler or a schoolgirl, to me, is not something anyone other than a toddler or schoolgirl should do

placemats · 26/08/2026 20:55

Thank you for the valuable lesson and information on what women and men should be wearing in the UK and how it's strictly to be conformed to.

I never knew there was such a strict dress code. Especially in a quirky drama series, not real life, with quirky characters.

πŸ˜‚ I don’t wear tights or trousers so I’m always in socks and dresses and skirts. Lucy has just had her husband randomly disappear (think the timeline is 5 weeks) and she’s really hung up on that voicemail where James says he’s bored so I expect her behaviour to reflect that. Plus the murder staged as a suicide has added a dangerous edge to all of this. She’s really worried. She wants to be useful. I find that all quite reasonable. What should she be doing? I get what people are saying though, we haven’t seen her best side, only the one desperately trying to find her husband, protect her son and hold herself together as she tries to process her husband’s feelings about her as well as the danger surrounding her family.

Agreed, and it says something about a show like this, which is 75% a light-hearted quasi-comedy, but also has some much more serious moments. Funnily enough, I'm watching it in tandem with French series Everyone Lies on C4 (I've actually got on pause right now), which has broadly the same premise: oddball guy gets gig as police consultant, and sees similar changes in tone.

Have we had a proper explanation as to why James and John's father disappeared? I wonder if his disappearance will be linked into why James is now in hiding i.e. Lucy & John think they're investigating James' disappearance but they actually end up solving why the father went missing too?

The whole vibe harks back to that time period - they are still living in the same house, they appear to have the same furniture, they are still driving the same car and Lucy's clothes are certainly "vintage" too.

That would be a brilliant twist!

I wonder if it would be scheduled as early as for Series 2, though - if finding their father is in the story arc, I'd imagine there will be hints along the way but it will only be resolved in what is intended (by the writer) to be the last series?

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/08/2026 20:16

Episode two tonight

When a party is cut short by an unwelcome guest JOHN is left in a spin. I ironically a murder witnessed by the entire wedding party proves to be quite a puzzle.

Did anyone think that episode 2 was a complete rip off of a Sherlock episode? I knew exactly what had happened from the start because of this. I loved the first series but was disappointed in this :(

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/08/2026 22:00

No but I don’t want Sherlock. So he has a dance and a murder

Yes! With the guard who died in the shower when he took his belt off. It was a practice run before the senior army man was supposed to die. I have noticed a few things over all the episodes that are taken from Sherlock. I love Sherlock and have watched it many times.

eta and in Sherlock it was the photographer wot dunnit

wheretoyougonow · 27/08/2026 22:12

@IAmKerplunk exactly the episode! I’m glad I’m not the only one who recognised what I was writing about.

I miss Sherlock!

eta it was John’s wedding!

eta again Sherlock swooping in and kissing Molly after ruffling his hair was the hottest thing 😳
