David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

There's a big thread in Style & Beauty about Lucy's wardrobe so I guess some people like it! Apparently the style is called Dark Academia.

Saw DCS Carol Shaw/Ma'am on stage in How The Other Half Loves at the Old Vic last week - she was very good!

So Ziegler has been suspended and presumably disappeared on the anniversary of his daughter's death... who died in a car accident. Was it an accident? Was she killed to send a message to Ziegler/Carter?

The back story has always been more interesting than the murders. It's a puzzle in itself as each week we are given another piece of the puzzle. For those that can't remember series one, IMO it was definitely worth rewatching series one before the start of series two.

In terms of goodies and baddies, I'm thinking Ziegler and Carter are on the good side. I'm undecided about Shaw, there's something about her I don't trust.

I like the chemistry between the characters. The casting is spot on. The friendship between John and Lucy, the similarities in personality between John and Henry, Lucy annoying the hell out of Mark Bonner's character, the partnership between Carter and John. I'm still not taking to Cole and Sullivan but I'm trying to give them a chance.

I agree about Ziegler and Carter.

Interesting point about Shaw. Not sure.

I can’t remember any of the details from season 1 except that he impersonated his brother who had disappeared. Which means I’m left with these ridiculous crimes being solved by John now and tbh it’s a bit boring

Try rewatching series 1?

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 31/08/2026 20:36

Just watched the wedding one and actually thought he had stabbed himself to ruin their wedding. I personally thought that was much more plausible and psychologically likely with someone who was acting the way he did beforehand.

Lucy has become less interesting and more irritating this series, waffly and seems less intelligent (all that 'I just made stickers!' tosh). Why have they done that?

The Christmas special sounds great 😊

Agreed, and it says something about a show like this, which is 75% a light-hearted quasi-comedy, but also has some much more serious moments. Funnily enough, I'm watching it in tandem with French series Everyone Lies on C4 (I've actually got on pause right now), which has broadly the same premise: oddball guy gets gig as police consultant, and sees similar changes in tone.

Thanks for the recommendation for Everyone Lies.
Really enjoyed the first episode.

Have watched this evening’s episode, as eldest & partner coming to visit 😊

Plenty of shots of Cambridge tonight. πŸ˜€ I was wondering where β€œCambridge’s labyrinthine streets” would be - they seemed just to have filmed any narrow route in the city centre.

I smiled when we saw the Council Offices sign outside the real Cambridge police station.

I’m glad DCI Carter is part of the search now.

IliveInCambridge · 03/09/2026 22:08

I heard something about the Christmas special earlier today, but I can’t remember where. It was an interview with David Mitchell, possibly on the BBC. The Hollywood Reporter tells us other things about it. I’m looking forward to the programme.

LiliesOnTheWater · 03/09/2026 22:15

Lucy is getting ditzier and more of a caricature each episode!

SabrinaThwaite · 03/09/2026 22:16

Lucy’s coat on tonight’s episode was … interesting.

I enjoy the summary, thank you for that link, but near the end I read β€œJohn says You’re interviewing her; she’s interviewing you.”

Did I mishear? I thought it was, β€œJohn says You’re not interviewing her; she’s interviewing you.”

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/09/2026 23:06

He did say that esp as I have subtitles on

Think it’s an error. Do get the odd one in recaps

I'm also liking Carter getting in on John's secret mission. I hope he doesn't turn out to double cross them as that would be a massive twist now I've decided Carter is a goodie.

Lots of laugh out moments for me tonight with one liners. Mark Bonnar is starting to steal the show a little bit for me with his exasperated manner.

moto748e · 03/09/2026 23:42

That's the big question, I think; is Carter OK or not?

macaroon8 · 04/09/2026 00:23

I didn't understand tonight's episode at all. Going to have to read the recap
