David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

I have a confession to make (I haven’t binged @BlondeshavemorefunπŸ˜‡) but I had a sex dream about David Mitchell last night πŸ™ˆπŸ˜±πŸ˜³

James or John?

Actual David Mitchell. But with a beard I hasten to add. I’m not totally crazy.

Autumnleaves82

Every time Ziegler appeared I kept thinking where have I seen him before?

He is Ralph Ineson and looking at his list of roles he has been in lots of stuff, he plays the character really well he has such a distinctive voice.

Thank you @fairislecable I’ve had a search of other things he’s been in and none of them are what I’m thinking of. It’s one of those slightly annoying things where I know there’s someone specific he’s reminding me of. Never mind! It will probably pop into my head in the middle of the night!

He reminds me of that generic Northern actor they generally get to play police in gritty dramas like Sherwood. David Morrisey.

They look quite similar and I know exactly what you mean! But he will always be that bloke from the office for me. Was he in Hustle too?

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/08/2026 22:59

Harry Potter films x 3 maybe ?

Amycus Carrow is a character in the Harry Potter series, appearing in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows . He is the older brother of Alecto Carrow. After Voldemort's takeover of the Ministry of Magic, he was appointed as the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts.

Yes that’s him.

He’s not in Hustle. Though the actor looks similar to him I think - Tom Mannion

@RomanMum the cameras drove me mad .everyone to the side of the main shot were in an out of focus it was weird.

BakeOffRewatch · 25/08/2026 09:23

@Blondeshavemorefun dh and I agreed to watch β€œludwig again”. He then went to play the second episode! I said no we’re watching episode 1 again! He put up some dissatisfaction but then we did watch episode 1 again. One of my favourite things about watching series 1 tv pace was the seasons changing from summer to a clear autumn by the end of the 6 episodes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/08/2026 19:18

Well done @BakeOffRewatchsure dh will appreciate weekly πŸ˜‚

Have we had a proper explanation as to why James and John's father disappeared? I wonder if his disappearance will be linked into why James is now in hiding i.e. Lucy & John think they're investigating James' disappearance but they actually end up solving why the father went missing too?

The whole vibe harks back to that time period - they are still living in the same house, they appear to have the same furniture, they are still driving the same car and Lucy's clothes are certainly "vintage" too.

Treylime · 26/08/2026 10:13

I assume J and Js mother is no longer alive. Its strange that James has no other family and friends who have queried where he is.

Good point!
Not to mention friends/neighbours…Also Lucy’s wider family and friends.

NewAgeNewMe · 26/08/2026 11:37

All this has escaped me… I really must concentrate more.

Mooselove · 26/08/2026 14:47

I loved series 1 but this second series I am not enjoying much at all. I agree with other posters about Lucy. Could she be any more annoying? As to the ridiculous clothes she wears, what is that all about? DH, who rarely comments about anyone's clothes, commented about the short skirt and the silly silly socks

moto748e · 26/08/2026 15:04

Bloody hell, give it a chance! We've only had one ep of S2 so far.

placemats · 26/08/2026 15:32

Why would anyone be bothered about clothes a quirky character would wear in an enjoyable and quirky TV show?

Most famously, he’s Finchy from The Office.

However, his voice is all over the adverts. He’s just been replaced by Vernon Kaye in the Dacia ads.

Well I am not the only one to have commented about her clothes. Is she meant to be quirky? She just looks ridiculous and I am pretty sure she didn't wear such strange clothes in the first series.

A bug of mine is socks with dresses or skirts as I think it looks awful and ridiculous unless you are a school girl. I may be sad but for me it distracts from the storyline especially as she is very annoying even without the silly clothes

Because it's not the clothes. For me, anyway.
It's partly the clothes. And the hair - just imo.
But mainly it's the annoying yakking on, cutting across John and her son when their trying to say something when it's been shown over and over again how bright they are.
The ridiculous Girls' Own Annual charging off to become a journalist.
And the lack of insight into how useless she is compared to the others and how she can spoil things.
Quirky is fine if there are redeeming features: Cf John.
Quirky for the sake of it is just weird with no useful features.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/08/2026 16:34

Good point about family guessing dad may pop up

it is tv
