David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

I couldn’t work it out either.

The murderer used data analysis based on what his colleagues had done in the past in similar circumstances (eg assuming that what they’d done earlier that day would affect what they’d choose to eat, so if someone had been to the gym they always followed this by eating salmon) to predict what they’d eat that lunchtime.

Do we have any data analysis people here who can say whether that’s reasonable or not?

Lucy’s clothing doesn’t bother me because I remember wearing something like each item at some stage in my life, so they might still be in my wardrobe if I’d not moved house since the 70s. I think Anna M M is a fine and versatile actress (remember her in Line of Duty? Radio Times describes her as one of the best-ever villains, and her character wasn’t corrupt) and David Mitchell is surprisingly good, given that he’s best known for being a comedian/comedy actor.

Tho that’s really taking a risk isn’t it

didn’t go to gym so will have salmon. Chocolate machine not working so had chicken

The killer had studied the others habits for the best part of a year so yes there was a risk the victim wouldn't go for the salmon but it was all about probability. People are generally creatures of habit. The killer was definitely the most devoted and patient killer putting all that effort in. Ludwig made reference to being very impressed with the killer's genius.

I did think the killer reveal was a bit rushed and confusing though. They didn't really explain the whole probability thing very well.

Haven’t watched the final one yet so can still comment
Ziegler dead 😱 😱
and they left the evidence behind 😱

it took all my restraint (actually falling asleep 😁) not to watch the next episode!

DuncinToffee · 18/09/2026 11:59

This week's murder felt like a side story and indeed rushed. Weeks of observation and data analysis on a napkin.

The main story gathered pace, and now Ziegler murdered.

AppleButterGutter · 18/09/2026 13:40

We caved and watched the final episode last night. Will have to sit on my hands on this thread until next week.

NewAgeNewMe · 18/09/2026 13:42

Will be watching later.

I agree the solution to this week’s murder was far too rushed. As was last week’s solution.
I have very little idea of what is going on and in truth wonder why I am watching. πŸ˜€
Perhaps I should have rewatched Series 1 but I don’t have time or access to the BBC iplayer

PrincessScarlett · 18/09/2026 15:58

I wonder why Shaw wants to transfer Carter. Perhaps she is trying to protect him like she said she was doing with Finch and Evans πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

NewAgeNewMe · 18/09/2026 16:03

Maybe Shaw is dodgy?

NewAgeNewMe · 18/09/2026 16:03

Maybe Shaw is dodgy?

At the very least, Shaw surely knows more than she's letting on.

PrincessScarlett · 18/09/2026 17:36

And if Ziegler was indeed corrupt, I am starting to think he knew James was John all along.

Yeah I don’t think I’ll be coming back to the thread until next Friday if lots of people have watched the episode and are going to post their opinions on it even if no plot spoilers!

IliveInCambridge · 18/09/2026 21:53

We’re all different, but I don’t mind being told next week’s episode is brilliant. That makes me look forward to it more.

I would probably be cross if someone said it was really disappointing and a let-down, though.

NewAgeNewMe · 19/09/2026 06:40

I’ve reported my post.
I’m really sorry I didn’t realise that would count as a spoiler

Personally I don’t think it does.
I have done the same myself in relation to another programmer and was reprimanded.

DuncinToffee · 19/09/2026 08:37

Saying the next episode is brilliant is not a spoiler.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/09/2026 08:40

TBH the whole series imo is brilliant tho yes saying 6 is , isn’t a spoiler

TheSmellOfSea · 19/09/2026 09:22

Actually ep 6 is crap if I'm honest. Terrible ending. Don't watch it. πŸ˜‰
