David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

If this is what they do, I've never noticed it πŸ˜†

Same

Why is Lucy wearing little white socks with her short skirt? She looks (and behaves) like a big schoolgirl. Plus, she's really irritating.

I agree. She wasn't irritating in the first series so why have the writers made her in this one?

As to her clothes (particularly the socks) I think she looks ridiculous.

Fully agree @Mooselove

Perhaps the actress (can’t be bothered to Google who she is) insisted on a bigger role in the second series and they gave her this.

Possibly but I wonder if they realise just how much she is annoying so many viewers.

More of my friends and family say they are annoyed by her than are not.

purpleme12 · 15/09/2026 20:36

I'm not annoyed by her at all

WhereYouLeftIt · 16/09/2026 01:19

I think Lucy's wardrobe is another nod to the 1970s when John and James' dad abandoned them. Ankle socks and short skirts is exactly what she would have worn as a child in the 1970s.

Any flashbacks of John and James as children, their clothes and the house furnishings are very 1970s. John still lives in the home he grew up in. He dresses like a 1970s geography teacher (corduroy jacket with pens in top pocket). James' and Lucy's house, decor and furnishings are very 1970s in style. James drives his dad's car.

I think this is all meant to suggest that John and James (and Lucy) are still stuck in the past, their present lives dictated by their father leaving them.

Well, you are the bigger person and deserve all those plaudits that will no doubt be coming your way.
Me, I want to punch her in the face because she's stopping me enjoying the programme as much as I used to.

I know it's partly because I have an extreme reaction to fringes that are too short, probably because my mother used to encourage the hairdresser to cut my fringe really short to cut down on the need for visits.
Ever since I've had control over my own hair, I've gone the full Claudia Winkleman.
Who needs to see out?

PS Feel I should point out that this is a lighthearted moan.

I agree with this. But their Dad would have left in the 80s maybe late 80s, I think the house/car/fashion is quite 80s

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 16/09/2026 15:47

I really wish they cast and styled Lucy better. Maybe Olivia Colman was too expensive.

100% agree about the costumes speaking to them being stuck in the past. Like the Famous Five mystery solving. It’s a bit Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy vibe too. When she had that oversized blazer on to face off Joanne Kemper, it was like a little girl putting on an adult’s suit to role play. Whereas Joanne Kemper was effortless in colour matching loungewear. Totally casual.

i don’t find Lucy annoying. I find her normal for someone whose husband ditched her and is wondering if he was bored with her. No more irritating than John! I love the actress though.

fatphalange · 16/09/2026 17:11

Love Lucy, she’s funny. Great styling as well πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Interesting if they filmed that way intentionally because that’s the normal state that people who wear glasses to correct short-sightedness, see the world in! I also think that James and John have swapped but DH says that Lucy would know her own husband and to be John, James should be wearing glasses.

Edited

That’s interesting, and very clever if it’s planned.

I’m short-sighted and wondered what you meant at first. However, my lenses cover almost all my field of vision: if I had smaller lenses then the things I was looking at outside the lenses would be blurred.

I thought last week’s episode was the best so far.

Haven't RTFT so sorry if this has all been covered but my take is that Series 1 was far better than Series 2 is turning out. In terms of plot I think its because S1 had all the jeopardy about John being found out that he was not his twin. That's gone and nothing's replaced it. In terms of script whereas S1 was drama with some comedy lines which came about from the situation, and really only from DM, in S2 there's clearly (to me) been a need to "make ot funnier" so half the characters are now trying to do comedy. Worse DM seems to be leaning towards slapstick. WTF?

I found S1 a great watch. S2 is meh. It's on the in background but I just can't engage. Probably just me.

Not just you.
I'm really hoping the scriptwriters have a definite plan of what's going to happen and they're not just going to let it dribble on just because it's popular and is making money at the moment.
"Sherlock" became a complete mess because of that, imo.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/09/2026 17:12

Like the puzzle of where JAMES is as well as JOANNE Kemper and the murderers every 10 years

But also, I like the weekly murder and how he works it out is easy watching Pleasurable

Agree /I am enjoying (if that’s the right word πŸ˜‚) the murders - by finding the Joanne Kemper mystery etc meh

NewAgeNewMe · 17/09/2026 18:27

Will be watching tonight’s episode early this evening and final episode this weekend, so will avoid thread to not give spoilers. Everyone is away and I’m away next week.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/09/2026 22:44

I can’t work out how the murderer knew he would have salmon

or how John worked it out

and chief Z is dead πŸ™€πŸ™€

Well it's all hotting up isn't it. Ziegler dead. Sad for Russell that both his fiancΓ©e and father in law have been murdered. Coincidence or not? Looked like Mandy was aware her dad was corrupt and tried to report him so perhaps didn't have the greatest relationship with him.

I was shouting at the screen when John and Lucy went charging after Russell leaving the evidence behind with Gareth. What if Gareth decides to expose it all to try and make a name for himself and jeopardises the whole case? Or hands it over to the wrong people?

Convinced Russell is on the good side. Poignant when John and Lucy saw a photo of him and Mandy and John commented how different he looked because he was happy ☹️

I'm warming to Shaw being a goodie too. Although surely they can't all be good? Shaw seems to like John and wants to include him on things he really shouldn't be privy to.

I'm disappointed noone has made it down to the basement yet. The basement seems to have been forgotten.

Liked Matt Neville's appearance although his warning about the more they dig the more people will die was a bit sinister.

I'm really enjoying this series. I think if John was still impersonating James it would have got stale so it doesn't bother me in the slightest that they changed things for series 2. The casting is spot on which always is important in making a programme successful.

Is it the last one next week?

Also, the motive is massively thin, isn't it? Obviously it's being presented as some kind of Leopold/Loeb thing, the perfect murder, but still...
