David Mitchell reprises his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, the reclusive puzzle-setter thrown into the world of policing after his identical twin brother James, a detective chief inspector, vanished without explanation.

The detective dramedy series (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71857231/bbc-ludwig-renewed-season-three/), which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, will drop its second season on BBC One on 20 August,

Season one saw James go missing, which led to his twin brother pretending to be him as he infiltrated the local police station to investigate, and he ended up helping to solve other cases

The synopsis for the second season (https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a71744111/ludwig-season-2-must-watch-mystery/) reads: "Now that he's an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

Of course, John won't stop, and neither will Lucy, John's sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James - a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."

Why Ludwig season 2 is set to be the BBC's next must-watch mystery

Fans have grown impatient.

My weekly telly treat alongside Sewing Bee

You know what, you're right. I really haven't got anything else on my recording list (bar sport). I’m not a sewing fan, so that's about it. Was TV ever this bad?

My weekly telly treat alongside Sewing Bee

Apart from the news, those two are the only current programmes I watch 'live'. Everything else I record to watch later, or decide to delete.

Having somewhere to discuss them afterwards does help. Later this year I may add Casualty and Celebrity Traitors.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 04/09/2026 04:02

Ludwig and The Night Manager 2 are the only TV I’ve watched in the last year.
Can’t stand the BBC β€˜news’.

Edited

John Taylor and Johnathan Pine, you couldn't get more polar opposite 🀣 but these two are definitely stand out shows this year.

That's the big question, I think; is Carter OK or not?

I think you might be right. I love the partnership with John and Russell so I really hope he's not bad.

NewAgeNewMe · 04/09/2026 06:58

I hope Carter is ok. I’d be sad if he isn’t. Same way I’d have been sad if Ted was H.

Lucy is getting ditzier and more of a caricature each episode!

I agree πŸ™„

deeahgwitch · 04/09/2026 09:40

I don’t like the Reel Mockery recap.
It’s so specific
John says
Lucy says.
Etc
Just a quick synopsis is better imho.
I hope you don’t mind me saying @Blondeshavemorefun

tinyspiny · 04/09/2026 10:31

I assume that Carters wife’s death was not an accident and she was the 2024 murder in the sequence . I’m also working on the theory that Suchet is going to be John/ James long lost dad , I’ve not read anything about the Christmas special so I could well be assuming something that’s already been pointed out .

Don’t mind at all

I like the more specific ones as times on stuff I totally lose the plot and don’t understand and like the obvious

not just Ludwig. Any programmes

Oooh I like the Suchet theory. He’s a big name so likely a big role.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/09/2026 12:16

The title says TV pace so I would have thought so? Unless - and I’m watching The Rapture today so could be influenced by that - you have a premonition rather than a theory.
