Was an avid ER fan 20+ yes ago. See its now on netflux, started rewatching. Its so superior to anything I have watched recently on TV. I had forgotten just how good it was! Anyone else?

I have been looking for something to watch again. Many thanks for reminding me about ER

pinotnow · 11/04/2026 19:42

Yes, no way would Doug have left Carol and absolutely not when he found out she was pregnant. That bit is just a case of suspend disbelief as we know George has gone to make films.

Completely agree the Carter addiction was done and dusted weirdly quickly without really making anything of it. The only good thing was Benton's reaction.

Pyjamatimenow · 11/04/2026 21:46

The Doug and Carol characters/ leaving were badly handled. As if he wouldn’t have come to see her and the twins if they were so in love. Then her just deciding one day to go to him and him just waiting like Forrest Gump on his jetty. He was literally on screen for 30 seconds. I bet they paid him a fortune for those 30 seconds. Also ridiculous was neither of them turning up to Mark’s funeral and no mention as to why.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 11/04/2026 22:16

Did Jerry the desk clerk just leave with no explanation and what happened to Marks little dog? 🙈😂

I think this is the trouble watching it back to back you pick up on these things!

Pasta4Dinner · 11/04/2026 22:53

Also I guess Seattle must be super cheap as he could buy a massive house on the water with a jetty.

Marks dog and Susan’s cat!

Susan is also scared of flying early on and has to abandon a holiday because of it, when the hospital is locked down for smallpox she goes to Barbados no problem.

It’s not just marks funeral, his wedding, they don’t even say they are coming and cancel from the weather like his daughter.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 12/04/2026 08:26

George Clooneys career did sky rocket after ER so not surprised we didn’t see much of him but would have thought Carol could have come back for the big events?

Surely Susan took the cat with her <worries> 🙈😂

Usernamenotfound1 · 12/04/2026 08:59

If I remember rightly at the time discussions were held about Clooney coming back to significant events.

he said that while he would have loved to do it, he felt that it would have made that event about his return and that would have overshadowed the storyline.

He was one of the biggest stars on the planet at the time so it probably would have, tbf.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 13/04/2026 00:48

I had forgotten a very young Ewan McGregor!

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 13/04/2026 01:17

Had also forgotten that Carol has a real penchant for a beret..

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/04/2026 16:50

Yes re a young Ewan! Saw a very young Dakota Fanning on an episode Ystd.

denisdenisdenis · 13/04/2026 18:04

I’m rewatching I’m more than halfway through s5 already.

Pyjamatimenow · 13/04/2026 21:25

There’s loads of people that have been in friends and Gilmore girls as well. Two of the doctors were also doctors in friends. One diagnosed Joey’s kidney stones and the other delivered Phoebe’s triplets and thought he was The Fonz

RubieChewsDay · 13/04/2026 22:08

One of the things I’m enjoying about the rewatch is spotting the before they were really famous faces in the supporting cast. I had no idea that Carter had a several episode relationship with Claire Dunphy 🤯 also recently spotted Arizona from Gray’s Anatomy, Alan Alda who I kind of wish had actually been Hawkeye and I’m pretty sure a young Eva Mendes had a very small role.

I’m on series 6 now, Luka has just turned up and Abby has just helped deliver Carol’s twins, but I can’t remember how she ends up in the ER. I assume it will be soon though.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/04/2026 22:18

I think im on season 7 now, Ive gone off Luca as he’s just bashed a homeless muggers brains out 🙄

Benton annoyed me as well by expecting Carla to fly Reece to Philadelphia for contact 🙄 especially after he kicked off about her moving away.

Its funny looking at all the normal teeth, when did that change?!

The moving foreheads and eyebrows as well.

normal lips too that move correctly. I can understand what everyone says- I lip read and fillers/botox make a lot of tv and film impossible to follow without subtitles!

Yeah right re the loving faces with actual expressions!

Theres still lots of HIV and AIDs story lines, I’m guessing this was an epidemic in certain parts of America. I’ve worked in healthcare for 25 years and have only met one HIV positive patient.

Yes then it was a death sentence. So the storylines were dramatic and made good tv.

now it’s a manageable lifelong health issue that people live with, not die from.

the science came a long way.

Not quite - triple cocktail had just come in in time for Jeannie (but I know what you mean).

SarahAndQuack · 14/04/2026 23:27

I've also been watching and I'm so enjoying it. It's so nuanced.

What strikes me now is how young they are. I remember watching it as a teenager and not getting that though Benton sounds so authoritative and worldly-wise, he is partly having to do that because he is actually very young, and sometimes quite out of his breath. I had a huge crush on Elizabeth Corday (still do!), and Jeannie is just incredibly beautiful and graceful.

I love Weaver's later storylines with her wife, but now I also sympathise with her early on. I don't think I blame Mark Greene for being career-focussed but I do think he is lazy about admin and uses his likeability in order to get away with leaning on her organisational skills.

I find Romano much less palatable this time around. He really harasses Corday, and her position is so precarious. It's really nasty.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/04/2026 08:34

Romano is a pantomime character though, one you love to hate. He is a dick but he’s quite funny with it 😉 plus he gets him comeuppance in the end 😱😂

I watched the one with Benton’s nephew last night, really sad.

“Out of his breath”?

it’s out of his depth isn’t it?

now questioning whether I have been saying it wrong all these years 😂. Depth makes sense though surely?

SarahAndQuack · 14/04/2026 23:23

Not quite - triple cocktail had just come in in time for Jeannie (but I know what you mean).

They still had the baby she adopted develop AIDS in later episodes.

i know the cocktail was around then but i don’t think it was as effective as the drugs and prophalactics that are around now. It reduced your chances of developing AIDS significantly, but not completely.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/04/2026 09:30

It’s definitely out of his depth, out of his breath makes no sense unless he’s just run up a flight of stairs 🙈😂

They all seem out of their depth at times but they are dealing relentlessly with complex trauma injuries which I’m guessing is sadly realistic for a Chicago A&E.

Lifelover16 · 15/04/2026 09:32

I loved it, the characters were so well drawn and the storylines brilliant.
I liked Susan, Carter, Benton.
I thought Doug Ross was very arrogant, and George Clooney was very good looking but such a wooden actor - every emotion conveyed with the same head tilt and so unconvincing.

Pasta4Dinner · 15/04/2026 09:39

I think they missed a trick with Romano. He was obviously odious but underneath a good guy. I think over time they could have kept him and kept giving more glimpses of his good side and turned him around. Also he could be funny.
I think they cut off his arm and didn’t know what to do with him after that.
