Was an avid ER fan 20+ yes ago. See its now on netflux, started rewatching. Its so superior to anything I have watched recently on TV. I had forgotten just how good it was! Anyone else?

Love’s Labor Lost is still one of the best bits of TV ever made. So sad.

That episode was devastating, and so well-acted. And it was only the first season!

i could never work out Peter Benton’s age, he’s newly qualified surgeon so must have been late twenties/early 30s, but his mother seems to be late 70s.

In the US they do 4 years of pre-med, 4 years medical school and I think he was a 4th year resident in series 1 so he’s around 30ish. I always got the impression, he was the baby of the family and with one much older sister probably much longed for and pretty spoilt.

He’s my favourite though, although I’ve never really gotten over my Carter crush. Which is weird because I was much younger than he was when it started and I’m now old enough to be his mum 😱

RubieChewsDay · 31/03/2026 21:34

Oh and I’m about series 4, episode 6, the amazing Dr Corday has arrived and we’ve just had the first sighting of ‘Rocket’ Romano.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/03/2026 22:01

I like that they have strong female leads and such a diverse cast. I’m always shocked at the American insurance system, it still seems an insane to me and the amount of tests people get unless they can’t pay! What I really struggle to understand is how children still need insurance for example Reece didn’t get hearing aids as Benton’s insurance wouldn’t cover it 🤯 such a crazy system. I was also shocked when Benton and Doug mentioned how much student dept they have, it’s something like 150k 😳 given this was 30 years ago I dread to think what it would be for today’s medical students in America!! It makes our student dept seem like peanuts in comparison.

LuckyLois · 31/03/2026 22:09

Ah it’s SO SO GOOD. I’m on season 4 and the original cast are amazing. I also like Benton way more than I did originally but Carter is still my favourite. Noah Wyle is so good at all those little physical comedy moments. With Clooney I keep getting distracted by his original 90s teeth- not because they’re awful necessarily, but because they’re so natural/different to now 😂

So much of the plot lines have stayed with me, I realise. I can still remember the exact place I was watching when Lucy and Carter were stabbed, and how some of the last Mark Greene scenes look on screen, despite not getting there yet on this rewatch.

Usernamenotfound1 · 31/03/2026 22:17

One of my favourite early episodes is the one with Rosemary Clooney.

Anne Heney as well. Two brilliant women.

RaspberryCloud · 31/03/2026 22:25

Rewatching after watching it a bit as a child…..SO good. Still only at the end of season 1 but (re) hooked. So much better than anything on Tele now

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 31/03/2026 22:32

Im currently watching at night after DH has gone to bed, so just about to get my fux.
I love the way there is genuine humour alongside real sadness. It is just such a good show!
Like most, when I was younger I thought Doug was the bees knees, but seeing him differently (sadly! Still looks great!) This time around

I binged watched it for 3 weeks and loved it. I’d forgotten most of the content and I realised that I’d not watched the last 3 series.

I’m now watching The Pitt by the same production team and loving it. I’m a healthcare worker so have always loved medical dramas. I enjoyed early Greys Anatomy but I think my favourite is House. It appeals to the diagnostician in me.

Edited

Ah you see house is great for Hugh Laurie, and the whole Sherlock Holmes whodunnit plot, but the medicine is a long way from accurate 🤣

same with Grey’s anatomy. Apart from the lifting of ER plotlines, they’d all have been sacked and lost their licences over the whole Denny thing, never mind still be working 23 seasons later.

i did enjoy Chicago Hope - originally ER’s competitor. Was a little more tongue in cheek and a bit more realistic, especially with the hospital admin side. Less of the “saving lives” hero drama.

code black is a good one for being close to how an ER runs.

youbizarrehorse · 01/04/2026 00:34

Oooh, didn’t know there was a thread about ER. I’m watching it for the first time, even though I remember it being on from the mid nineties. I was a Chicago Hope fan. I watched House and The Good Doctor, both of which I loved, but ER is less glossy, which is a nice change. House and the Good Doctor always had pretty much the same formula. Two cases per episode. One or both patients was misdiagnosed and nearly died, then there was a lightbulb moment and everyone got fixed in the nick of time, with odd exceptions! Am knitting while I watch ER. My two favourite things - knitting (or crochet) with a hospital drama for company😆 And glass of wine.

beadystar · 01/04/2026 00:52

Watched it as a teen in the 90s but not since and not all of it.. currently just started season 2. Carrie Weaver was a favourite. Agree with pp about the arrogance of Dr Green, could not watch Love’s Labour Lost. Amazing TV.

FrayaMorstater · 01/04/2026 00:58

This was hands down my favourite tv show when I was in my early 20’s I’m on season 2 episode 8 only 330 + episodes to go.😂 It’s weird I remember watching it on a Thursday night and there’s so much I’ve forgotten. I did remember Doug Ross rescuing that boy in the tunnel though. It’s so much better with subtitles as well the 2nd time.

GloiredeDijon · 01/04/2026 02:22

I loved ER and still remember the shock when Romano got his arm severed.

I have just watched The Pitt which stars Noah Wyle aka Carter.

It is an updated ER and just as good so far.

I agree but it’s fun guessing the obvious disease for those in the know. It takes me back to the clinical vivas as a student.
I had a complicated pregnancy resulting in my gyni taking a huge interest in what was the underlying cause. It was like being in an episode of House. Unfortunately they never worked out what was causing my problems. We had some interesting conversations though re the differential diagnosis.
I spent time on an oral medicine clinic early in my career. I noticed that burning mouth syndrome seem to be almost exclusively seen in middle aged, menopausal women. I mentioned it to my consultant who laughed and dismissed my observation. 40 yrs later it is now an established symptom of menopause. If only he had listened he could have written a paper and made a name for himself, instead it was another woman who made the connection many years later.

I did the same with loose teeth and osteoporosis and again was ignored by the consultant.

So many observational discoveries have been made by women in medicine. It’s a shame they didn’t listen to them.

OnTheBoardwalk · 01/04/2026 16:16

Ah I need to hide this thread, it’s going to pull me into watching all the episodes again!

I love Romano especially as PPs have said in the fantastic episodes where Lucy and Carter get stabbed

And the salaries, in an episode I watched recently and either Mark, Benton or Ross referred to earning $30k, I was pretty shocked and did a bit of googling, that works out worse than he would get as a resident in the NHS doing specialist training. I make it around £48k adjusted for inflation. A second year resident in the NHS gets £44k based on a 40hr week. It's £52k and up in specialist training.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 02/04/2026 01:39

I've started watching The Pitt as well. Its crazy how much more modern it is! Looking at ER measuring BP with old fashioned pump/ stethoscope, lack of ultrasound, intubating without the cameras they use in The Pitt. The old fashioned boards with magic markers, and paper charts! The Pitt board looks like an airport board! The constant hand sanitising in The Pitt as opposed to them wearing their surgical scrubs to go home!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/04/2026 07:42

Where are you all watching The Pitt? I don’t think I’ve got the right streaming service for it sadly.

@WorriedRelativeyes exactly, they earn peanuts! The only ones with any money come from money (Carter and Corday) Benton said a quarter of his take home pay goes to paying back his student loan 🤯

I’ve just watched an episode and Corday says how crazy the system is and it’s designed to keep people poor (I suspect unless they go into private practice.)

And when Doug dates the sales rep and she's paying for everything and buying his clothes because their income is so different

I loved er back in the day.
Strangely, I fancied Dr Greene!

OnTheBoardwalk · 02/04/2026 08:27

@Girliefriendlikespuppies HBO max got added to my uk sky account free of charge a week or so ago which is where I’m watching the Pitt

think you can buy it a subscription separately for about £6 a month

Scorchio84 · 02/04/2026 14:44

Yeah @Girliefriendlikespuppies HBO Max was added to my NowTV package so that's how I'm watching it

Cocolapew · 02/04/2026 18:12

I'm going to rewatch after I finish The Pitt, apparently they wanted Noah Wyle to be John Carter in it but Michael Crichtons (sp)
estate who hold the rights to ER wouldn't allow it.
I loved St Elsewhere back in the day, Mark Harmon and Blair Underwood 😍

I loved ER, the start of my lifelong love of Maura Tierney. I've also started watching it again as I never actually finished it. I am absolutely dreading the bit with Romano in S9 because it has haunted me for decades and it wasn't long after that I stopped watching it. I don't know why that was particularly difficult to handle!

I also noticed Benton coming over as a better character and a lot more tidy and handsome than I remembered from the first time round.

Is that the helicopter scene?
