Was an avid ER fan 20+ yes ago. See its now on netflux, started rewatching. Its so superior to anything I have watched recently on TV. I had forgotten just how good it was! Anyone else?

I think they missed a trick with Romano. He was obviously odious but underneath a good guy. I think over time they could have kept him and kept giving more glimpses of his good side and turned him around. Also he could be funny.
I think they cut off his arm and didn’t know what to do with him after that.

He always had a soft spot for Elizabeth as well, I think some of his moments with her are incredibly touching even though they clash. Romano is racist, sexist, homophobic and yet I always found him so compelling on screen, we hadn't really had a decent antagonist character up to that point he arrived. Kerry to a lesser extent, but Kerry is generally a very compassionate person though she has her moments of being infuriating and jobsworth. The ER would collapse without her, let's face it!

I really do miss Doug and Carol once they leave, it always broke my heart that Mark had to go through his illness without support from them, two of his closest friends.

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks about Mark's dog. I always imagine that after a few weeks, he realised his schedule was too busy to give the dog the life it deserved, and he found it a good home.

I still wish Mark and Susan had made a go of it, I liked him with Elizabeth but they didn't ever seem quite suited - she was too sparky for him and I think their relationship just couldn't recover from the things that happened to them. The moments with Mark and Susan in S8 are lovely, and while you can see it as them just being close friends, which they are, there's another layer to it. The shot where they focus on Susan's face when the letter is read is devastating. The actress played that so well - not just mourning Mark, but also what might have been.

fretaway · 15/04/2026 18:15

The OG cast were great. I thought Lizzie was fab but once Mark died (cried buckets) they didn’t know what to do with her character and she lost her spark. Such a shame.
Agree with viewing characters differently now. I thought Weaver was awful before but actually she was put in some really difficult dilemmas and was actually being quite fair.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/04/2026 18:59

I always thought she was called Carrie Weaver but it is Kerry 🙈 I think she’s brilliant, she’s fair and actually really caring about the staff.

I reckon Mark used to use a neighbour to walk the dog and decided the dog would be happier with them as they didn’t work as much as he did 😉😂

OnTheBoardwalk · 15/04/2026 22:37

I didn’t like Kerry first time round but love her now and her interaction with Mark

one of my favourite scenes is when ‘the’ stabber comes in to the ER. Kerry can’t cope and tells Mark to take this patient. You can see Mark starts to question and make it an issue until he sees Kerry’s face

its a teeny tiny interaction between them that gets me every time

I loved it, the characters were so well drawn and the storylines brilliant.
I liked Susan, Carter, Benton.
I thought Doug Ross was very arrogant, and George Clooney was very good looking but such a wooden actor - every emotion conveyed with the same head tilt and so unconvincing.

That fucking head tilt 😡Even thinking about it drives me mad!

Scorchio84 · 16/04/2026 04:03

@beezlebubnicky & @Pasta4Dinner I loved Romano too so I totally agree about the writers just not knowing where to go after the accident

He was a prick but the little flashes of humanity every now & then, not least his dog or after another row with Benton (😍) when he walked off with Reece in his arms Romano signed to him, I'll have to go back to see what it was he actually signed but I know it melted my heart...

RancidRuby · 16/04/2026 08:17

He signed “take care of your father”.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 16/04/2026 08:18

It is surprising that out of all them George head tilt Clooney is the one who went onto mega stardom 😂

i could never work out Peter Benton’s age, he’s newly qualified surgeon so must have been late twenties/early 30s, but his mother seems to be late 70s.

There is a vague mention of his Mum having a ‘big birthday’ which I’d assumed is her 70th?

She seems older because it’s the early 90s, she has grey hair and has had a stroke.

Peter’s older sister Jackie already has teenager children in s1 & her and Walter seem to be in their 40s.

Peter is referred to as the baby so I’d assumed he was a late baby born after a very big gap. (Jackie mentions having to look after him when their Mum went back to work).

In s1 another surgeon says he’s a second year so probably only 27/28.

He never admitted his mistake that if he’d done what Jackie said & put her in a home she wouldn’t have fallen down the stairs & broke her hip & subsequently died.

Also he was offered to take a break from his residency by Dr Hicks (annoying written out with no mention) to care for his Mum but refused.

borntobequiet · 16/04/2026 08:37

I didn’t see it when it first came out so first time for me. It’s got to be one of the best series ever.
Quite apart from anything else I get nostalgic for the oversized coats in beautiful wool or tweed. I really miss that look - it gets revived from time to time but never looks as good.

Binglebong · 16/04/2026 13:56

The thing that amazed me was the way they dealt with anyone troublesome. I know they stopped using hard restraints at one point but they still gave them drugs at the slightest thing.

Not an easy job but I can't believe they would get away with that here!

The us is very pro medication. One of my dc is over there and everyone is gobsmacked when she has a cold and is just oh I’ll stay home, drink fluids, maybe some paracetamol.

they’re all off to their “primary care provider” getting antibiotics, antivirals, pain patches, all sorts.

even in the Pitt and some of the supposedly more realistic shows anyone vaguely agitated is “10 of haldol” until they’re docile.

Very good points @denisdenisdenis & also I forgot about Dr. Hicks, I loved her!

It is surprising that Weaver being gay was even a thing, no one would bat an eyelid these days and I’m pretty sure even then people wouldn’t really care (or have been surprised!)

Is the Chicago accent really similar to the New York accent? It sounds the same to me.

No to my ear Chicago and NY are very different.

I'm going to rewatch after I finish The Pitt, apparently they wanted Noah Wyle to be John Carter in it but Michael Crichtons (sp)
estate who hold the rights to ER wouldn't allow it.
I loved St Elsewhere back in the day, Mark Harmon and Blair Underwood 😍

Loved St Elsewhere. Really rounded and fully developed characters. Don't forget the youthful Denzel Washington, who I think actually stayed until the end of the series, even though he had started to break though in movies. It had the most awful last episode, unfortunately.

I wanted to rewatch it, but apparently it's not available for streaming where I live - Australia (and I can't work out if more than the first series is available anywhere) - and I don't really want to get DVDs.

This is for me.

Im sure the intention of Romano was someone who was clearly sidelined and bullied growing up, but had used his intelligence and drive to get to the top. But he didn’t have good relationships with people.
I would have like to see him with his mother etc. I think they missed a trick showing what made him what he was in subtle ways. I think the series suffers without him, you need a bad guy. Everyone can’t be amazing.

Channel 4 is showing it all if you have a vpn :)

I didn't realise that was Denzel!

I never watched this, it was a bit before my time but I know my mammy & my aunties did, like with Hill Street Blues, Dallas etc

I do know what you're talking about though because I LOVE all the old 80's shows & dramas..WTF were they thinking? Did the son even feature much in the show? It's up there with Bobby coming out of the shower

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/04/2026 18:13

@SarahAndQuack no 🙈😂 it’s not all the characters accents but some of them def have that NY twang to my ear anyway. Like Carols boyfriend Shep.

I’ve almost made it to the end of series 7.

I meant Weaver being gay. People still make a fuss about gay people in some professions where they're coming into contact with children/vulnerable people - it's not remotely surprising she encountered homophobia in a series that starts in the 90s!

Actually, I remember being amazed by ER portraying things so positively when she and her wife had their baby, and there was a court case where it looked as if she might lose custody of the child because he wasn't biologically hers.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/04/2026 18:36

Really I think it’s around 2003 now (series 7) and at my DDs school at this time there were several lesbian parents and no one batted an eyelid.
